I've heard a lot of bad things about Alienware and keep hearing Origin is the best.

I don't care about the design. Even if it looks like an 80s computer, as long as I can run my Skyrim, BF4, and GTA V on the max settings even after dropping it on concrete or leaving it on and charged for days at a time. I want power and quality.

What do you think?

Origin PC is a rebranded Clevo, same as sager and Eurocom.

I would buy a Eurocom custom laptop. They offer the best configuration (Im not trying to market their business...)

Check "Panther"

Well now I'm hearing the best bang for my buck would just be to just build a custom laptop, but I know nothing about building computers and don't want to mess anything up.

Origin PC is a rebranded Clevo, same as sager and Eurocom.

I would buy a Eurocom custom laptop. They offer the best configuration (Im not trying to market their business...)

Check "Panther"

I looked at the Panther, and tried customizing it with the best specs on the site, and without even going halfway through it's already more expensive than an Origin that has better specs.

I think panther is not the correct laptop to choose from Eurocom to compare: the scorpius 3 is based on the same barebone than Eon 17 SLX.

This said, i've tried to configure one of each with same hardware: Origin is less expensive (-90USD plus a free recovery usb stick) than Eurocom, but you have less choices (especially for the screen).

Yeah, Eurocom is exceedingly expensive for reasons unknown. You can also get from Sager through a reseller like LPC-Digital or XoticPC and it will be cheaper than both origin and eurocom. But as far as I could see, many of these clevo rebranders have been skimping on QA with these machines so it's more of a "pick your poison" kind of deal.

I can say that a place that WILL definitely do QA before sending to you is Mythlogic, but Mythlogic is also a bit expensive, and warranty may not be as above and beyond as it was say two years ago.

I agree with the Panther (P570WM) recommendation. If you truly place a high value performance and want a quality build as well, that's your machine. There is nothing wrong with the other options, just chiming in based on what you said was important. The other options cannot come close to the performance of the Panther.

It is beyond expensive, however. The one universal thing I guess I should've included is a good price. I can get max specs on an Origin 17" laptop with a bag, shipped in a box, custom case design, and a bunch of other neat features for about $6,200. I went through about five options on the Panther and chose the max stuff like I did with Origin, and it was already over $6,500. I still had about 20 settings to go through.

What features would I really be missing out on? Nothing really important? The screen isn't really important, since I won't be taking it outside, so matte is of no issue. I also don't need it to look pretty on the screen (Although I also would like to be able to see what I'm doing instead of a blurry mess), but what I really don't want is to be teleporting around and not being able to hit things.

Nothing really important: only the screen option could have been a matter. That said, if it was for myself, i'd go to Origin (same hardware, -90USD, usb recovery stick for free, what else?).

You can always ask for discount, you can ask directly from Eurocom youtube channel. Same implies with XoticPc and Origin.

The screen makes a HUGE difference, check some reviews on the screen. Some of clevo clones laptop do really have shitty screeens

I really can? I wonder for how much. I knocked down the price of the Origin laptop I wanted to about $6,000 once I removed a few unnecessary things (such as lojack and t-shirts), but hopefully I can get it lower. I don't make much money since I don't have a job and I'm a college student. I can get the money if I save up, eventually.

Origin does have matte screen with LCD calibration (whatever that is), and the raving reviews I've heard from friends are very good. I think the screen will be fine if I choose Origin.

But when it comes down to it, can't I just replace the screen myself if it's bad by purchasing a separate one and installing it into the laptop for cheap?

All laptop screens are replaceable. You have 30 days guarantee or something provided by origin.

I was about to Purchase an origin PC to be frank, but when I found about the panther, I quickly changed my mind. If you are looking for resell value, then aim for alienware. If you are looking for a good performance laptop that you plan to use for 3 years at max, then get an asus ROG. My asus is still working and my family is using it as a workstation despite all my experiments on it. If you plan to use a laptop for 5 years + with great value and upgradability then Clevo clones are not a bad choice at all. If you are looking for the ultimate laptop performance, get panther, period.

Also, check dinoPc there are Gigabyte clones as well.

So I have the specs of both the Eurocom Panther 5 and the Origin E17 that I wanted and I'm not a computer specialist. Compared together, what do you all think?

post-35160-14494999939464_thumb.png

I had to use copy-paste, MS Word, and paint to really get it all lined up.

Edit: Also, I wanted all this for gaming. The Panther isn't under Eurocoms gaming laptops. Is it really good for gaming compared to a gaming PC producer like Origin?

You're trying to compare a wild beast to a tamed one! Origin E17 is the same as eurocom P5 pro, not panther.

Yes, it's an incredible machine. It makes mincemeat of games. It's the only laptop in existence that has a desktop hexacore CPU and dual GPU. It's the master of all beast laptops and pretty much destroys everything else. It can also run Xeon processors and be used as a portable server.

Well I guess that settles it. I'll get a Panther, then.

I do have a 4940mx CPU, and its a total garbage, extreme edition of mobile CPU is usually a miss. Panther is not an ergonomic laptop, but for sure its the best performance "laptop" out there. Also, 980m is really damn good, its actually not far away from the desktop ver. performance wise. At last, DONT GET 880m GTX, NVIDIA's BIGGEST SCAM!

I don't have 4940MX, but 4930MX is fairly decent in the right machine. Mine and a few others I have seen overclock nicely as long as temps are controlled. I have not seen any impressive overclocking examples using the 4940MX. Not sure if that is user and machine dependent, or a flaw with the 4940MX, or a combination of all of those elements.

I have no problem overclocking that CPU at all, but thermal management is a real chore with Haswell. My 4930MX overclocking in unmanageable except with Liquid Ultra thermal paste. I have been using it on the 3920XM and 4930MX for over a year with superior results. I cannot use it on my Panther because the heat sink does not mate with the CPU IHS well enough. I have to use IC Diamond to fill the gap and it (and other pastes) is not nearly as effective as Liquid Ultra. Liquid Ultra requires a nice tight and square alignment and cannot be used to fill the gap in sloppy fit. I should look into a replacement CPU heat sink for this Clevo beast. It does wonderful at 4.3GHz with IC Diamond, but 4.5GHz gets way too hot unless I use AC cooling. I can run the 3920XM at 4.5GHz without AC cooling using Liquid Ultra and not have any thermal management issues, but the CPU (and GPU) heat sinks fit extremely well on both the M18xR2 and Alienware 18. This is one area where Alienware has consistently done a marvelous job. Unfortunately, with the new BGA machines, it's not all that important because they are not made for, and incapable of delivering, extreme performance.

Eurocom has a 10% discount going on now, yes even if your not a student, they will pretty much apply it to any build this Spring I believe. Search slickdeals for it...

What do you think?

Alienware x17m R3 with a 2960xm, over 16 gigs, all SSDs, and a 780m GTX stock got nearly 11000 on the Heavensward Benchmark. A k4000m can whip Skyrim if it overclocked. Suggest you don't go over 950 on that clock and clock the ram to 2500. The PCI-E 2.0 is a "bottle neck" on that card. So if you are looking for a tuner on Ebay, R3 or R4 are sweet. R4s can even go for a 880 (K5000m) to a 980 or the AMD equate so that about where I stop on Alienwares.

If you want something new, Eurocom, have about 5000US$ and get the workstation SLI they released (Dual Xeno processors), you won't be replacing it for some 15 years plus. You can litterally run "any game on the planet max" on a setup like that.

  • Thumbs Up 1

Alienware isn't exactly the best value these days. You're mainly paying for the brand. Anything clevo is good, though, origin is a big brand as well. Check out Sager Notebooks.

I am very aware of the healthy skepticism of most if not all of you. I therefore kindly ask of you not to spew out the fact that its impossible to build a laptop at me but instead attempt to help me to make this somewhat possible for the next person interested in the idea.

      I already have:
somewhere to buy a screen: https://www.laptopscreen.com/English/ somewhere to buy a motherboard, CPU, GPU, RAM, storage and other things although I would be very interested should you recommend other places where I can get these
I will build the cooling system myself

      I need:
somewhere to buy a laptop shell (I am aware of how difficult it is to find one and am therefore very flexible on all other components) somewhere to buy a power supply
Thank you very much for helping me and pushing the possibility of building a custom laptop ever so slightly more realistic

I have spent a little time in the past few days looking around this site. I would love for someone to point me in the right direction to a forum that has information that could help me out with my problem.

      I have a:

      Alienware M17XR3
      Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
      Intel I7-2820QM 2.3
      Bios InsydeH20 Version 1.0 A12
      NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460M
      (4x) 4 GB Ram
      samsung 2.5" 256 SSD (SATA3.0Gbps)

It has been an amazing machine for the last 10+ years. Minor issues, nothing that an Alien Respawn could not fix, till now! On battery power it works just perfect.  Then I plug it in and it's all OK until I try to do anything, and then the screen goes white. The screen sometimes goes yellow, sometimes blue, but mostly white screen. It will do nothing until I do a hard reset (holding the power button till it turns off and turn it back on) with the power unplugged.  If the power is not unplugged then it will go through boot up to windows swirling dots then go white again. If I plug it in and do nothing I can charge it, unplug and continue what i was doing. I have tried a lot of solutions bouncing around the internet, and thought I was having a DC Jack connection issue (replaced the ac/dc power adapter, then the motherboard). I get a better connection now but with the same white screen result. I stumbled into this forum and I'm hoping to find solutions to my issues.  Then upgrade like so many others have.

Any ideas, comments or suggestions welcome.

      Thank you in advance!

      Bios Release Version – v2.0.0

      Updated or Modded Items:
A11 UNLOCKED BIOS FOR m18Xr2 (UNLOCKED BY SVL7 AND FULL CREDIT GOES TO HIM FOR UNLOCKING!)
SVL7 Also created the PRR2.EXE tool that allows you to flash the new bios by unlocking it.  (FULL CREDIT GOES TO HIM FOR THAT FILE PRR2.EXE)

Here are ALL the things I've added, modded, and enhanced on this bios -
I've added FULL LEGACY SUPPORT ON THIS BIOS with ONE or TWO CARDS (SLI).  You can FINALLY use Win 7 OS on your machine and run the 900 series GPU's!
      This is a MAJOR breakthrough!

LEGACY SUPPORT Confirmed.  Works with 900 series GPu's in single OR SLI formation Updated the Intel RST Legacy to v12.9.0.2006 (Supports TRIM in RAID0 - CONFIRMED) Updated Intel RST UEFI to v12.9.0.2006 (Supports TRIM in RAID0 - CONFIRMED) Updated the ONBOARD Video Card for the HD3xxx to v2171 - FROM v2132 Updated ONBOARD Video Card for the HD4xxx to v2171 - FROM v2132 Updated the LAN Firmware & PXE Boot from 2.0.5.9 to v2.0.6.6 ADDED NvMe Support for m18xr2 ADDED M.2 support for m18xr2 Updated CPU Microcode to v29 for the 2900 CPU's Updated CPU Microcode to v1c for the 3900 CPU's Updated GOP Driver for Intel Sandy Bridge CPU Updated GOP Driver for Intel Ivy Bridge CPU Updated MAIN GOP Policy module for the m18xR2 Eliminated some code that wasn't used in the m18xR2 Updated CSM Module (v2) Streamline some coding to make mod(s) run a little more efficiently (v2) Added FPARTS.TXT to rar file in v2. (I had forgot to add it in v1) v2.5 to be released shortly.  I've updated a few more modules that I didn't realize could be updated.  (It's only 3 modules, but it's still an update!)   It should be released in about a week.  Hope this helps ya'll!
      Instructions to flash:
Use a flash drive to create a boot disk into dos Unzip ALL files into the root of the flash drive (flash.bat, r2final.bin, fpt.exe, flash.bat, prr2.exe, fparts.txt,m18r2.hdr, m18r2.hdr.bin, readmefirst.txt) BOOT INTO DOS – Note, that when you set the bios to legacy in order to boot into dos, you MAY have to reinstall OS!  (Just be prepared to reinstall no matter what) Once you boot into dos, run the file flash.bat It will unlock your bios (THANKS TO SVL7’s BIOS UNLOCKING TOOL – ALL CREDIT TO HIM FOR THIS TOOL!) Let it flash… Reboot your pc, and enjoy the MASSIVE updates!
Be on the lookout as I do plan to release newer version with more updates in the future.  However, it wont be for at least a few weeks as I'm now working on legacy support for the m17xR4 and several other systems.  So please be patient!

      ENJOY!
