if you want a fully upgradable laptop (including CPU and GPU), then you should try to find a configuration upon Clevo barebones, like the P177SM (single GPU) or P377SM (SLI). The first one is more or less 1900USD, the second with one 980m around 2100USD.

Msi and Asus have got soldered CPU, but only MSI uses standard MXM card for GPU. I think Alienware are no more upgradable (AW specialists should correct me if i'm wrong).

I cant speak for current version AW's but my m18xR2 has been upgraded with more/better RAM, i7-3940XM, and a geforce 980m all without too much of a hiccup (appart for the fact that the 980m require modified drivers to even work as well as win8.1 which forced me to upgrade from my beloved Win7. In the end, most manufacturers dont want us to tinker inside our machines.

As stated above the older AW 17 models that came with either a 780 or 880 with 4th gen i7's are a solid choice, only thing is you would need to shell out for a 980. Aside from that they are fully upgrade-able. I'm currently typing this from one right now, don't have any complains i love it. My setup is i7 4910mq O.C to 4.2 gigz 32 gigz ram 880m 120hz 3D 1080p display blu-ray writer/player and 2 1tb samsung evo SSD. The new models don't have disk drives and CPU and GPU i believe is soldered to the board (not 100% on that i know one if them is at least) and only upgrade-able to 16gigz of ram... but at the same time they have the graphics amplifier which is pretty cool. You can get one of those for under 2500, but i don't believe it meets your criteria.

I suggest you check for ASUS ROG G751 - G752JY-GH72X

Specs include:

I-7 4860HQ 2.40GHz

RAM: 32GB Memory

HDD:1TB

SSD: 512GB

Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980M 4GB

Screen:17.3"

Operating system: Windows 8.1 64-Bit

You can easily switch back to windows 7 if you like they support drivers for windows 7 on the Asus site that's what's nice!

Asus is a great company their laptops are solid rock trust me :)!!!

for that budget, maybe clevo x599/x799 or aw 17, but for upgradability, some people say clevo model is easier than aw models, other says aw got better temperatures, but since I never owned a clevo, I can only say this based on the information i gathered from internet.

I'd suggest Xotic PC. They are a reseller of Sager/Clevo laptops. They have excellent customer service, every laptop is custom-built to your specifications and field-tested before shipping, and they are quite cheap compared to other brands (such as Alienware). Their laptops and quality are extremely high. Shipping does take a bit though, as they have to assemble your laptop and field-test it first.

I myself recently got a P650SE/NP8651 (i7-4720HQ, 970M) for around $1100 after rebates + Witcher 3 for free. They have many options, of which you can customize yourself. For example, here's an i7-6700 Skylake and 980M (Gaming Laptops - XOTIC PC - Gaming Notebooks - Custom Laptops - Custom Notebooks) starting at around $1650, which you can customize further or look at their Sager/Clevo page for other models.

Tried using MSI before. Pretty good but the hinge eventually gave out and broke. I think the newer models are better hinged though. I would really love to try a Sager/Clevo laptop in the future even though they don't look so good in the cosmetic department. I've always loved a clean and slick look for my laptops. Currently using a Y50 and it looks awesome
