Ninjahunter was gracious enough to agree to post some benchmarks of the m14x with the I5. I would ask everyone to hold off from any comments whether they be positive or negative compared to your normal expectations. I think most I5 owners are a little nervous about the benchmarks in fears that everyone will "troll" them.

My game benchmark requests are as follows... If you have a 1600x900 I would ask that you turn it down to 1280x720 so that we (me) can match your settings for an honest comparison. Also for results I would like to you please run each with stock GPU, then OC GPU (whatever you are comfortable with)

Easy Games First - These games have built in benchmarks and are easy to run.

- Metro 2033 (dx11, high, no physx, no DOF, set to AAA)

- Just Cause 2 (default settings, no bokeh filter)

- Mafia 2 (no physx as this kills FPS by 1/2, high settings for everything else)

- Dawn of War 2 (ultra settings)

Games that require Fraps plus logging

- BFBC2 - set to high (minus HDAO) enter a mp map that's empty (atacoma desert) hit F11 to log, capture all flags, then turn off logging.

- Witcher 2 - medium or high settings (we will probably need to talk on this one as it's difficult to match settings)

- Crysis 2 - Very High Vanilla and Extreme Vanilla (i hear this has a in game bench but I haven't messed with it yet)

- COD BO - High and Ultra Fraps logging during MP match or SP?

@Ninja - if you can think of others please let me know. I have a decent library of games.

Best Wishes, StevenX

Some i5 benchmarks, ile try to get as many games up as possible at different settings.

Using driver 275.33 and using Throttlestop.

Using all standard Nvidia CC settings except pre-rendered frames is 0 and V-sync is forced off.

@ Ninja - thanks so much for getting started. Can you please add which driver you are using and also whether your FPS on witcher 2 is with OC or without? Also i forgot for witcher do you mind shooting a screenshot of the config you utilized? I just want to see exactly what the settings are. Again I really appreciate your effort on this!

Thanks!

Very impressed with those figures. Im working on the comparison figures which in truth are not far off from yours. I really wish you have BFBC2 or something comparible to really compare the 4 vs 8 threads when utilized. I am installing witcher 2 tonight (takes a long while) so I will have some figures tomorrow. I found a decent crysis 2 benchmark tool by adrenaline but the ultra bench is weird. It supports dx11 and hi rez textures supposedly. The extreme benchmark worked well. I took screenshots of everything just in case.

NINJA - do you have any other games we can compare? Again I really appreciate all your effort here. Not everyone will be able to afford the I7 and this thread will help those make an educated decision on what's most important. Also wish you had ARMA 2. That's a huge game that pushes the machines to the limit.

Hmm, i dont have very many CPU intense games because i used to game on a duel core. Shogun 2:total war also has a demo. I believe the world in conflict demo was good with multithreading, there are a couple of crysis warhead benchmarks. I also have the two latest S.T.A.L.K.E.R games but im not sure about their multi thread support. If im not mistaken theres and amra 2 demo. Lol, i definatelly thought i would be of a little more help, but apparently half my games are unreal or source engine.

Are you kidding? Those benchmarks above alone are of extreme help. Other websites do not have benchmarks at all for the i5, this will definitely help people who are questioning getting the i7 or not. Great work!

Just ordered mine this week with the I5 and 1600x900 screen base model. As long as it performs better than my g71x best buy model I will be more than happy, having a main machine that i can carry around will be a welcome change.

Not to mention a battery that will last longer than 30 min.

Ya, i will get to that in a Day or two. Ive gotten Quite a few requests and want to do a good update. On a side note, could anyone post equivilant benchmarks? I noticed alot of people claiming huge performance gaps in some games (namely crysis 2). Thanks -Ninja

@Ninja - right now the only huge gap will be BFBC2 or BF3 alpha. But I dont think he has BFBC2. Crysis 2 is pretty close from what I can tell. Anyone with an 8 thread cpu can launch the game and play, toggle out to watch your active cores to see how many are used. Crysis 2 used 4, most of the other games use 4 or less. Witcher 2 is a big difference, it uses 4 heavily and the other 3 or 4 at around 20-30percent. In witcher 2 I get an average of 36-38fps compared to 28 posted by the I5. I will be happy to post comparisons, it's just been a little busy on my end and also trying to get a little recreation time as well.

In truth I am very happy to see his strong numbers for the I5. The games I wish he had to compare are

BFBC2

Dawn of war 2 (or any others with built in benchmark)

Arma 2 (Benchmark)

I created this because I wanted him to have an outlet to show the real numbers without a bunch of trolling because I get sick of that $hit fast.

So my honest thoughts are the I5 is definitely enough for most games, multiplayer games like BF3 and BFBC2 are still up in the air for comparisons. I would bet that the I5 does great for Call of duty.

Guest aznguyen316

just registered to say great thread. I am also curious about BFBC2 benches just because that might be useful in BF3 comparisons.

also curious on SC2 benches.

The only "GAME" that I own that stresses a GPU is FSX. The others are handled by the Intel GPU RON, BIOSHOCK2,CIV4. Am still getting a feel for settings types of planes and stable frame rates useing the frame rate monitor that comes with FSX.

Looks like theres a very noticable difference performance wise, Thanks for getting the comparison up wasnt certain how much of a difference there was. I can really tell that the performance makes a dip when theres destruction or just alot of paticles and "battle dust".

@Ninja - its going to dip no matter what when theirs lots of smoke and so forth. The cpu really comes in handy when its a full server. That's when you see the value of the cpu. To see what I mean login to any 32 man server. I can try do the same even at the same time. Enable logging and we can compare notes. Its not a perfect way to bench but it might help show some performance indications. My "gut" feeling tells me that BF3 is going to be a challenge to run. So hopefully they will allow us to optimize on the BETA build.

Thanks again for everything.. your hard work is much appreciated!

Btw,

Have you considered this?

Review Intel Sandy Bridge Processors Gaming Performance - Notebookcheck.net Reviews

Intel Sandy Bridge Processors Gaming Performance: Part II - Notebookcheck.net Reviews

They clearly show that even in bfbc2 there are no to minor differences between the fps in those games!

So why do you have different results? I mean they have every game except for the witcher 2
