US$21 low profile Dell DA-2 cable for AKiTiO Thunder2

This one has low profile PCIe power connectors. A slight price bump up to US$21. According to martinm0 at http://forum.techinferno.com/enclosures-adapters/9951-low-profile-pcie-connectors-discussion.html#post137104 the outer AKiTiO chassis does clear the PCIe power connectors. This product has been highlighted on the opening post of this thread.

Thanks @Tech Inferno Fan for posting here too.

Note to get the wires to fit, I snipped the zip ties and flattened the wires to the sides. Still close, but nothing is getting pinched or slit as long as you're not a brute about it I imagine. I think a shorter version for internal use might be good. The vendor on eBay will make anything you ask for it appears.

Hi all, I've been lurking for quite a while and have had to finally break down and make my first post! The fact that I haven't had to post yet is a testament to all the great information on this forum, thank you to everyone who has contributed. Anyway, I've ordered all the parts required for what will (hopefully) be a plug and play eGPU solution. These include: Akitio Thunder2, EVGA GTX960 (small form factor), Dell DA-2, and this adapter from eBay.

My first question is pretty basic. I think I have everything figured out except how to power on the DA-2 using the paperclip trick. Can anyone give me a little walkthrough of this?

EDIT: Apparently I posted two years ago as well...who knew.

EDIT: My DA-2 just arrived a couple hours after my PCI cables did, just after I posted this, so extra pic added with DA-2 connected.

I was wondering if this would work with a PE4L system?

EDIT: And another question- is it reasonable to get the 2x 6+2 pin version? Since 2 6pins are 150W (at 75W each) and the slot itself is another 75W, we're already looking at 225W which is close to the maximum the Dell DA-2 can provide.

Is this just the adapter at the end that you would still have to smolder to the DA-2 or is this a complete product that just can plug into your eGPU?

Should just be a plug-and-play solution. The 8-pin end just plugs into the Dell DA-2, the DC barrel powers the adapter (Akitio or PE4L) and the 6-pin PCIe power connectors go to the graphics card.

WOW okay awesome. So really all you need with the Akitio model is to install the GPU into the AKitio buy the Dell Da-2 and the plug and play part and your done for a mac? That seems crazy easy.

As far as hardware goes, this is pretty much all you need, aside from possibly needing to open up the Akitio box to allow for larger cards.

I don't think the new AMD Fury X is a good candidate for the Dell DA-2. The Fury X has a TDP set at 275Watt, a bit too much for the Dell DA-2 to pull. If you want to use the Fury X, you're better off using a regular ATX PSU with a minimum of 500 Watt to get a good power efficiency. The DA-2 should be fine for the GTX970 you linked though.

ASUS 970 mini : Yes! But keep in mind that the ASUS is using 1x8-Pin PCIe power plug.

That's because they use a 8-Pin PCIe plug on that cable and the 8-Pin pf the DA-2 is different. Still they fit each other with a bit of pressure :D

Don't worry, that's the way it is supposed to be. Just make sure, that the row with the removed pin is connecting to the bottom row of the DA-2.

Hey guys,

My current eGPU setup:

- ATX Corsair CX500M PSU

- EVGA GTX 760 (170W TDP)

- powered PCIe x16 riser

The GPU requires 1x 6 pin + 1x 8 pin connectors and I'm not sure if the new setup I'm planning will safely provide that:

New eGPU setup:

- DA-2 PSU

- EVGA GTX 760 (170W TDP)

- 6pin Y splitter (1x male to 2x female)

- 6pin to 2x6+2 splitter (got this from the PSU)

- barrel mod

So the GPU has 170W TDP, whereby 75W is provided directly from the PCIe slot and the remaining 95W is provided by 6 pin + 8 pin. However, the 6 pin splitter is only rated for 75W, so we are going slightly over. I found somewhere that in practice, the 6 pin is apparently able to provide way more, up to 150W, still not sure if it's safe over a long time.

Is this going to be a problem? Probably not during light use but how about when gaming or other GPU heavy tasks?

I made a super professional diagram to better illustrate the setup:

Bonus question: I'm about to solder the 2x12v and 2xGND onto a barrel. - Can I solder both 12v wires together onto the + terminal as well as both GND together onto the - terminal? Or how would I go about this?

I would think you'll be fine. I'm running a Zotac GTX 970 with the same setup (though mine has 2x 6pin). Gaming has been working fine so far (granted Batman has been locked at 30 FPS so it's not straining the card that hard). But all has been well for me.

And yes to the soldering. I think that is fine as well.

@TryptoPhan: The GPU doesn't need that much power that is any way to worry. Also is the DA-2 limiting the mac. amount of power so I would say that it is safe to use the 6-Pin y-splitter.

Combining 2x12v and 2xground is no problem. Inside the PSUs it is already the same but splitted to separate wires later to spread the load.
