Hello,

Newbie on this forum, I'm interested in the overclocking (above the +135MHZ that I can do basically) of my 970m 6GB on my GT72.

I have read a bit on the web about it and it looks a big secret this Maxwell Overclocking. I mean that usually, it is easy and free to find information on how to do overclocking (I have done a lot of overclocking on Desktop PC) over the web.

Since 2 or 3 days I'm looking for information about overclocking my 970m 6Gb and I found out that the only places where there is information, I need to be a Pro-active member or people are asking me for money (!) ...there is a guy Svet on some MSI forum who is asking for money to do the modification on your laptop !!! Never saw this before...

Therefore, I have some questions :

1) Is this so called overclocking (above the base overclocking - I mean  an overclocking that would permit me to push the Vcore and to go above the +135MHZ base oveclocking on the core) really exist ? It looks like if I read this thread ;)

2) If it exists, why so much "business" or "secrecy" around it ?

3) If overclocking possible on my 970m, can somebody explain me shortly what is needed ? Driver modification ? Bios modification ?

Hope my questions are OK.

thanks a lot for any help about this

@Klem Has pretty much taken over catering to the masses While @Prema also has mods listed for most cards, so no real cloak and dagger there. You only need to make 5 real post and you too can get a vbios mod already ready for flashing.

Hi John,

Thanks for the answer. In fact, I have discovered Maxwell Bios tweak tool :) since I posted. Therefore, everything became a bit clearer to me, ti was the answer I was looking for.

I would like to try by myself to create my own bios at first, Will certainly have a lot of question about it !

That will only go so far, but have fun.:)

Hey John,

Started quickly this morning to try to mod my bios :)

So I have changed very basic things in Maxwell bios tweaker :

- TDP Base Clock

- 3D base clock

- Boost clock

I have input the same values for the 3 (1202Mhz - As a reminder, I'm trying to overclock a 970m 6GB), I do not care about having a boost for now hence why I have input the same value.

The base value for my card are :

- 924Mhz base

- 1038Mhz 3d base

- 1038Mhz boost

I know that it can reach easily the value I have entered as a lot of these 970m go easily at 1500Mhz for the core with what I have read (maybe pushing the voltage a little for some)

Once I have changed to 1202Mhz the 3 values with bios tweaker (I have also lower down the temp target and max), I have saved the Bios and flashed it without any issue.

I have reenabled the GC and restarted. I have opened GPUz but unfortunately, the value in GPUz were still the base one of my card. I have extracted my modified bios again and check with Maxwel Bios tweaker if the value I have changed were still changed and they are the updated value (See attached printscreen)

Therefore, the conclusion is that the bios modification has been taken in account in the bios but are not effective (I assume).

There must be something I'm missing , another parameter to change in MBT if I want my overclock to be effective :) Or maybe a story of Nvidia driver to change ?

Thanks for any help !

Some new developments :

without changing previous modifications (3 values at 1202.5Mhz), I changed the max table clock (in the boost table tab) to the same value (1202.5Mhz).

I flashed again and oh surprise, my values changed : (see attached)

New values.jpg

So GPUz and Nvidia inspector detect the change of values.

I ran a steam VR performance test to confirm my overclock. Unfortunately, looking at the current clock in Nvidia inspector during the test, I see a max of 1038Mhz (the original boost clock).

There has been some improvement but still, there is a parameter I forget to apply the Bios modification ?

Maybe an important detail : it is blocked at 1038Mhz for the core clock..but for the memory clock, it has applied (unlocked) the overclock of 100Mhz (2500 to 2600Mhz) that I have chosen, the current memory clock reaching 2600Mhz during the test.

Thank you for any help

Ok, changing the boost states table is doing the trick, My GPU is now running max at the values I specified. I just changed GPC max values to 1202.5Mhz for P00, P01 and P05. Not too sure if I need to change anything for P08, I left it with the default value.

Now I guess this is about fine tuning and a lot more parameters :)

Without changing anything else, I can't go over 1300Mhz for the core, crashes. I have not pushed the memory (still 2600Mhz), will try now.

And then, I will up the voltage a little to see if I can go further for the clock core :)

Seems that my story is interesting a lot of people !

Anyway, I continued the tests today and I modified the Voltage as it seems that I can only have a stable core overclock at 1228Mhz (and 2800Mhz for the memory - I did not really pushed the memory for now, I'm interested in the core mainly)

I went to the voltage table and modified the 3 first sliders/values associated to a Pstate 16 (strange, Nvidia inspector does not see any Pstate 16). I have just increased the voltage from 1200mvolts to 1218mvolts (1 cranck) for the first one and did the same for the rest (increase by 1 cracnk). Result, no success, on my core overclock test value (1266mhz) it is crashing.

on the second test, I noticed at the bottom of the voltage table, a voltage slider not associated with any CLK or Pstate, I decided (randomly I must say ) to increase that voltage from 1200mvolts to 1218mvolts. No result as well, it is crashing.

I guess I'm missing something here (Again !).

Could it be that I need to push more my voltage to have an effect on the overclock stability ?

Thank you

Teaser :P 1 day it will be mine !

I got back on my Bios stable overclock and tried to push the voltage/core frequency through Nvidia inspector, very limited voltage increase that way (25mVolts) but it does not change anything, crashes when going over 1250Mhz core value.  I have the feeling that I will need to push much more the voltage if I want and overclock stability at higher frequencies ? Am I right ?

Also, I read in this topic  that the MSI GT72 could have an issue of power supply, is it the case ? Did I understand well ?

Thanks for making me  a normal forum member, it looks like I can now download the modded bios of this subject, tempted :P but no, I will try to find out some ways to make that voltage increase work !

I have been shared a vbios of a normal and mod bios of a Desktop grahic card (Titan x), I will "cheat" a bit looking at what values have been modified to help me for my modification

I have done something   Just modifying the voltage table (each crank !! following the boost table kind of), I can now go over the 1250Mhz, I have topped at 1350Mhz. And more importanly, I have unblocked the voltage slider In Nvidia inspector Overclocking tab.

Big step up, I can defo unlock my voltage in my overclocking software via the voltage table in MBT. However, still blocked a +135Mhz on the core clock slider.

However, Even if my card can peak at 1363 Mhz (via Nvidia inspector) during a Steam VR performance, it is mostly staying lower than this averagely, It does not max out continously like it used to do, is it a sort of throttle ?

That is exactly correct. To many people try to take the easy route and then start making videos and how to manuals and claiming work that was never theirs. Be glad it's not @svl7 doing it... The second you try altering some his files is a 100 percent guaranteed brick of you card.

Ok, no problem, I obviously do not want to mess with any file and also, I'm not looking for any fame on internet, too old for this crap

Would have been interesting to have the settings used for me to see where I'm a bit short ;) I have the mod bios for the day I'm fed up messing around with my Bios at least

Btw. if possible, let me know or give me some rough leads about what table I should look at and update (in MBT)  to improve my oveclocking ?

Hey, I'm new to overclocking and I found this forum while researching how to boost my computer's capabilites. I have an MSi GT60 2QD Dominator and I was wondering where/how i get a modified vBios so i can crank the output of my 970M?

What specs do you guys need?

Hi, all first post here.

Couldnt find a intro thread.

Got a Eurocom X6 a few months ago and finally decided to start dabbling with overclocking it. Looking forward to be part of the community.

I ordered a laptop from Pc Specialist Defiance II with a Nvidia 970m vga card.

Can i flash this card with the vbios mod in the first post? (is my card compatible)

just googeld a bit, think mine is soldered but the card have 6Gb Ram
