US$189 AKiTiO Thunder2 PCIe Box (16Gbps-TB2)

Recommended Posts

I tried searching, but didn't see anything in particular regarding this:

With the AKiTiO Thunder2, should ANY Thunderbolt cable work with the adapter? I have a late 2013 iMac with a GTX 970 connected via the AKiTiO adapter and Thunderbolt. The stock Thunderbolt cable works just fine, but it's too short for my current setup. I ordered a 2m OWC Thunderbolt cable, and the card is no longer recognized when using that cable. Reverting back to the stock cable works perfectly.

I've already returned it, but I would like to get a longer cable if it has a chance of being compatible. Anyone have any experience with a longer, non-included Thunderbolt cable for the AKiTiO setup?

Can anyone confirm:

-Thunder2

-GTX 750 Ti

-quality 120W 12v 10a power supply

is stable and working? Or if it's not ...

OP seems a little contradictory on the matter:

INFO: using a 120W AC adapter with PCIe power see http://forum.techinferno.com/enclosures-adapters/8848-%24299-owc-mercury-helios-16gbps-tb2-discussion.html#post121898 for board modifications needed

[...]

INFO: 75W can be safely passed to the slot with an upgraded power supply explained here here

And the few examples I've skimmed from the board don't sound encouraging (although they're not always using an upgraded power supply):

I'd prefer to simply plug in a 120w psu and close the case, but will need to decide whether to buy a 750 Ti with or without a 6-pin connector (can't simply upgrade to Dell DA-2 later if 120w + 750 without connector is insufficient). Or I could just build an i3 hackintosh for $50–75 more ...

(I have Macbook Air mid 2013 TB1.)

Thanks to everyone who has contributed their knowledge so far ...

Hey guys, I just realized my big fat mistake, and it is that I don't have a raiser with a moltex.
Which basically leaves me with a Card that won't receive enough power from the mount.

Was wondering if there is a way of using my psu to feed the 16 pin mount and the card and leave my card in the base as it is right now.

I mean i modified the box to be able to stick the card on it.
If u need more info, let me know, but please help me out.

@sdedlus1 Take a look here: https://forum.techinferno.com/index.php?/forums/topic/8938-2014-13-mbp-gtx750ti16gbps-tb2-akitio-thunder2-win81osx1010-flinch/

@Enano You need to make an adapter that will feed power from that big PSU into the AKiTiO with a barrel plug: https://forum.techinferno.com/index.php?/forums/topic/6543-guide-making-a-molex-to-barrel-adapter/

Easiest would be to get a 2xMolex -> 6-Pin PCIe adapter cable, cut off the 6-Pin and use the remaining 2xMolex plugs to connect to a barrel plug.

That is also described in my basic hardware guide: https://forum.techinferno.com/index.php?/forums/topic/7832-the-basic-egpu-hardware-guide-for-macs/&page=1

Hi guys, this is my fist post here.

I have a macbook pro retina w / 750m and I am interested in purchasing AKiTiO Thunder2 PCIe Box.
I will use a GTX 970.
I wonder if this PSU http://www.ebay.com/itm/111783350941?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT
works with AKiTiO T2?

Thanks.

Thanks @Dschijn, very helpful. As you said in that thread, because there isn't a way to underclock in OSX, I'll look for a GTX 750 Ti or 950 with 6-pin connector + larger PSU instead.

I just got my Akitio and GTX 970 Gigabyte Mini ITX and it fits but just barely, and it's not wide enough so the graphics card will actually plug in...how do I get it to fit?!

With the Gigabyte card, just like the ASUS one, you will not be able to close the case while the PCIe power plugs are plugged in. Only if you make a cut into the case above the PCIe plugs, it might work.

Without the PCIe plugs it fits, right?

No I can't even fit the card into the slot with the casing off. Like I said the card fits into the akitio just barely, but the slot isn't lined up so I can't plug in the graphics card. How do I get it to work?? I can provide a picture if that doesn't make sense

Assuming you're talking about the actual graphics card connection to the Akitio, not the PCIe power, you may need a bridge to make a flexible connection then.

Can you please explain what hardware/software you are using?

Can you post a picture of your eGPU hardware?

I am using a 2013 15" Retina MacBook Pro with the 750M, Akitio Thunder2, Gigabyte 970 Mini ITX, and EVGA PSU. I am running Windows 10 via Bootcamp on my MacBook Pro.

Here are the pictures:

What is that 8-Pin plug going into the GPU? That looks not healthy. Can you make a close up off that? Doesn't the PSU have a native 8-Pin plug?

Did you also apply the paperclip trick on the PSU?

No the PSU doesn't have a native 8 pin. It has a 6pin thing with a 2 pin next to it but I don't think they fit into the 8 pin. I can't remember but I think either my PSU or GPU came with this adapter thing that took the 2 wide 4 pin things and it converts to 8 pin. And yes the guy who did my electrical work did the paper clip trick
