Y510P SSD slot?

Recommended Posts

Hi All

I purchased the UK model Y510P (In the UK we have only one choice - non-SLI, 16GB with Blu-Ray), which can with a 1TB hdd with 8GB of cache. When I opened up the laptop, I discovered that the hdd had the cache on-board, and that the SSD slot was empty.

I've since replaced the 1Tb with a 512GB 840 Pro SSD, which is nice. Is there any advantage to populating the SSD slot? If so, what do I put in there?

Thanks

Shaun

You mean the msata slot, right? If so you could actually just buy msata ssd and keep your stock 1TB as a storage.

Sorry Darkworld but the SSD slot is not msata, it is M.2. (NGFF). You can keep the 1 TB HD and just add a M.2. SSD into the slot and you will have two drivers and you can clone your C drive over to the SSD. The only problem with the M.2. SSDs are they are rare right now and only MyDigitalSSD has one available in the 42mm lenght (which is the size you need). I bought one and really like it, you can find them on Amazon.com.

Problem I got with that M.2 42mm SSD was the controller. I decided to buy a crucial m500 and wait until the M.2's will be better.

You may try Plextor M6M which has capacity upto 512GB and 80K IOPS

Thanks all - I'll wait until there's a better choice of M.2 SSDs - That MyDigital has a few negative reviews on Amazon UK.

Yeah, Lenovo threw us a curve ball, but we'll start seeing more 42mm ssd's as soon as more manufacturers start including the slots on laptops. Unfortunately for us, right now they're only available on top-end machines. Once they start showing up on mid-range laptops, we'll have a better go with it.
