6470b with i7

Hey Rohnin. I got curious as I've been considering a similar upgrade for my system, so I checked your manual again anyway:

On page 2 it does have an i7 quad in there:

● Intel® Quad Core® i7-3540M 3.00-GHz processor (SC turbo up to 3.70-GHz; 1600- MHz FSB, 4.0-MB L3 cache, 35 W)

Should work. :joyous:

Although why do you say an i7 is a requirement for an eGPU?

i7-3540M is a dual-core 35W CPU

Probably a typo in the manual, and since there is no such thing as an i7-3540QM.

Anyway should be plenty of power though right?

A i7-quad can be almost twice as fast. We've had success retrofitting a i7-quad to a smaller Ivy Bridge 12.5" HP 2570P. It too was never factory shipped with one but it works and works well. Though you can see there it does help if the cooling subsystem is modified to deal with the higher temperatures in that small chassis.

If that is a concern then consider installing a 35W i7-quad (i7-3612QM or i7-3632QM). Though the 6470B has a larger chassis and (presumably) bigger heatpipe so may be work fine with a 45W i7-quad??

Thanks Nando. That makes sense since it has twice the cores/threads.

Now since the OP was asking in the context of an eGPU implementation, I grabbed a few samples from the leaderboards:

DX9

So if I upgraded from an i5-2520M to a an i7-2860QM, from an eGPU perspective it seems a Quad can deliver ~31% improvement on DX9, ~14% on DX10, and <0.5% on DX11.

Great advice on the heat/cooling consideration... will share back findings here when I get to Phase 2 (CPU upgrade) :).

Just a quick update, the upgrade to a quad core CPU worked:

The performance gains were inline with expectations with a 34% improvement on DX 9, and a measly 0.6% on DX11 (Graphics Score).

No mods to the heat sink were required. Temps are looking OK and should drop a bit further after the thermal paste settles.

Excellent. I was looking for potential cpu's for upgrade in my HP probook 6470b (Other than the ones listed on HP website on product review) . So, glad that I found this thread.  Is there any else who successfully replaced the cpu on 6470b? Please share the processor number.

I've just replaced i5-3320M in my Probook 6470b for i7-2860QM. It works.
