I got the i7, and mine did not come with the mSATA at all. The one I got has a 1TB HDD spinner. With that said, It was 3 days before I bought a 256 GB mSATA to install in the empty mPCIe slot. I already had a version of Win8, so I just did a new install (with some basic hacks to get it to work). From what I read, the mSATA only would run at SATA II speeds. This is not true in my case. ran mulitiple tests and found that the drive is running at SATA III. My windows score for the drive is an 8.9 as well (not that that means anything). My boot time from complete power off is 12 seconds with the upgrade. Now I have a 256 GB boot drive and a 1 TB storage drive. I hope this helps your decision.

I got mine without any ssd from newegg and just installed a 256GB msata from muskin as the primary drive.

installed without issue, but didn't have a screw to mount it in place, actually had to break down and go to a tech store for a darn screw.

Yeah, same here. I just spent nearly half an hour trying to find this goddamn little screw!

Yeah, same here. I wanted to install a bigger mSATA to boot from. The already 16G SATA exist in the y500 cannot be used for booting coz its too small and from what I've researched, its for cache (something)

i ended up buying an msata to sata adapter from newegg, because mine wouldn't find the msata drive everytime. Just changing it from one side to the other worked perfectly tho.

i bought a mushkin msata from newegg. sata 3 6GB/s and it works. it wasn't too expensive either.

Yeah if you have an old laptop laying around you can take it apart and steal the right size screw, heh. Otherwise remember to buy the screw when you order the mSata drive!

So would you have to reinstall Windows on the new mSATA SSD if you plan on using the 1 TB HDD as a secondary drive?

I believe that is correct. Though I bought my Y500 with the mSATA empty and decided to go with a 32GB Crucial SSD for cache. Even with that setup boot time is very quick, under 10 seconds. And whatever games or applications you use the most get cached and load time is pretty good. It isnt ever going to be as good as going full SSD. Though at this point the cache seems to work well enough for me. As mentioned make sure you have the right screw. I didn't and I was lucky I was able to salvage a screw out of an old floppy drive caddy that worked. Another reason to keep old crap I guess.

      Hi, i own a Lenovo y500 (i7 3630qm, 8gb, gt650 sli, Adata sx300 64gb Msata(os)) and a Lenovo Miix 510 ( i5 6200u, 8gb, intel Hd, 256 gb Ssd)

Today i was running an Fem analysis with over 300000 elements and my y500 is struggling to complete the analysis. Most of the time it gets stuck and reboots automatically. Whereas my lenovo Miix 510 finishes the same analysis in just under 5 mints.
Personally i thnk 3630qm is much more powerful than the 6200u. Or am i wrong?

I would really appreciate it if someone could explain the problem i am facing and help me to fix my laptop.

Every once and a while, my fan will start rattling, and everything works fine, but it is just extremely annoying and I don't know how to make it stop. I tried using the dust cleaning function of the lenovo battery application, and it helped a little but occasionally it will start making the noise, and it is really loud and concerning because I hope it is not indicating any other more pressing issues with the Y500.

      Hi to everyojne,
      I have one question.
Am I able to use a egpu ( EXP GDC V6.0 Beast Laptop External Independent Video Card Dock) with my Lenovo y500 with a flshed bios? I can acess the port of the wifi card or the cache ssd for the mini pcie cable.
I have a Nvidia 9800GTX for testing and later I want to run a GTX 970 with it.
      Greetings, Yohaennes

I managed to start and have already learned many new things this week about bios and its structure but need more resources if any body can help . I actually learnt it all cause i needed to rset my forgotten bios password ... I bought Y500 a year ago and changed Bios Password and then never get it bios and forgot it forever now as it true .
learning is awesome and really I'm a programmer o I enjoy knowing new things .I currently manged to decode and uncompress my bios structure but never managed to know if there is any resources where I can managed stored settings and how to get to it and repack bios to restore it back after modifications and if anybody like to share me this research and learn more together .. ?
