Need game recommendations!

Recommended Posts

Really struggling to find any new games that captivate my interested. I loved Tomb Raider and Bioshock Infinite but I'm struggling to love Far Cry 3, Crysis 3 and Metro Last Light and probably won't complete these titles.

I think I value a really good story and would be willing to try older games, I just need something to play!

I am aware of steam summer sale and am keeping a close eye on what is cheap but still haven't seen anything I want to play.

I'd really appreciate some recommendations and why specifically you liked that game.

Thanks!

Good story? Anything made by Bioware. :)

Did you try Deus Ex Human Revolution? I just started it, and it looks pretty good to me.

Yeh I love Deus Ex: HR but I've played it through many times including the missing link DLC (which is very difficult if you try to do it without any abilities to get the achievement), but the graphics are looking very dated now.

I do still need to get Fox and Pacifist achievements though.....

Have you played the Mass Effect series? I'm generally not a fan of third person shooters but the story and the fact that choices you make in the first game is carried across to the second and third games was quite refreshing.

Yeh, I should have mentioned the obvious big games that I've played through. I loved the Mass Effect series but was one of the huge number that was a little bit disappointed by the endings. Only one made sense and they should have stuck with that.

In hindsight I really liked the story of Mass Effect 2 with the Illusive Man, excellent stuff.

You could try a couple indie games, and no, minecraft doesn't count haha.

Like Bastion was great, the announcer/voice over thing alone was worth the money, not shabby at all as far as story. Limbo was really good, i felt like i got really connected to the game and the atmosphere is outstanding. Bleed was a really good completely skill based action platformer, it had a lot of "wow, that makes me a badass" moments, its a good bit of quick fun for the money. Evoland was a naustalgic game, it starts out like some of the very first RPG games, and as you play you unlock more gameplay mechanics and graphics, very cool experience. And if your into shooters more than anythign else, Natural selection is a cool, competitive shooter, its humans vs aliens, but theres a twist, one person plays it like an RTS, building the base and giving orders, very cool and unique game.

I dont know, i feel like every now and then im getting drug through the mud by modern gaming, you know, where every game feels tedious, I feel that playing a handful of indie games, or just Nintendo games(old or new) really snapped me out of the funk.

Thanks Ninjahunter, perhaps indie games are where I should look next.

I know what you mean about being dragged through games with a certain amount of tedium. Nothing like a bit of Zelda to mix things up :)

I'll definitely have a look at the indie titles you suggested, some will hopefully be in steam sale.

I thought Far Cry 3 was pretty good, then again I don't play FPSes for the story (but I thought it was OK). I dislike both Metro Last Light and Bioshock Infinite. Metro felt super-linear (almost like playing Battlefield 3 campaign; extremely shallow game) and the Bioshock had the crappiest gameplay I've seen in an FPS in a while -- I couldn't be bothered with it, even if it had outstanding storyline. Other than Star Wars The Old Republic MMO, it's been a while since I played something new that wasn't an RPG that had a good story (last thing I remember was Fallout New Vegas). I liked the old school point and click adventures much more in that respect: Monkey Island series, The Big Red Adventure, and well everything that was made by Lucas Arts was at least great (Grim Fandango, Full Throttle, Sam & Max, Day of the Tentacle, Indiana Jones, etc.). Lots of other old RPG games have substantially better storylines than most of the new stuff. Then again if you don't like Deus Ex graphics (it looks fine IMHO) I doubt you'll play that stuff. But yeah, the graphics from something that was made in 90ies does look pretty bad compared to anything made last few years. In short, I loved adventure games mostly for their story and the last one I played was Walking dead (not bad).

I think the partial reason for this dumbing-down of video games was the big "console-isation" that occured ever since the first PlayStation and XBox came out (GTA V may finally be the good exception), and there is very little creativity (apart from new DRM schemes) with games coming out of big publishers.

Story you say? That means we must turn to older games :(

What about classic games like warcraft 3? Another game I highly recommend is Fallout 2. It's the only game ever where you can actually get the feeling of talking to people. Your options in the game are almost limitless. Fallout 3 is an utter disgrace when compared to this game. Just make sure if you try it to also install the latest fanmade patch from nomutantsallowed. The developer went broke when making the game and rushed it to release and never fully patched it. Fallout 1 is nice too, but just doesn't have the depth of 2. Beware that this game is from 1998, so be prepared for 640x480 :)

Yeah, Fallout 2 was one of the best games I ever played. Games like Skyrim seem like a bad joke in comparison. But it is one of the better RPGs that came out lately (sadly).

Even though Fallout 3 and New Vegas were somewhat simplified in comparison I loved them and played through most of the DLCs.

Thanks for all your recommendations. I've built up a bit of a game library now.

I've been playing Bastion a bit and like how it plays. I will definitely take a look at Fallout 2 but I am worried the aging graphics may ruin the experience somewhat.

Also for pure ridiculousness I got Sleeping Dogs because it looks like a bit of fun.

Along the same lines I've been replaying Max Payne 3 and even though the story is a bit lackluster the gameplay is just perfect. Slow-mo done properly. For me it has fantastic re-playability on the hardest difficulty and the story being dull isn't a big problem for me. Dropping an entire room full of bad guys in less than a second (real time not slow-mo time) and watching them all drop to the ground at the same time is just brilliant!

I'm worried by what games are on the horizon though. What do we have to look forward to for the rest of 2013?

How about some of these: -

Deus Ex: Human Revolution - Brilliantly polished off title, well balanced story, action, stealth, character developement. Some say the boss titles were a bit too easy, perhaps, I didn't use any form of guide for my first playthrough and I lost count how many times I died in the first boss fight. Honestly a thoroughly enjoyable experience from start to finish. The Missing Link DLC was also a lot of fun, especially when you set your own goals after completing it (took me around 8 hours so there is value there). Try a speed run with no kills or being seen.

Amnesia: The Dark Descent (indie sort of) - Do you like being scared? Play this in a darkened room after hours. This is a lesser known title for most and probably showing it's age a little bit but it just goes to show, graphics aren't everything. I properly jumped out of my skin in places, frozen to the spot and scared to move my character onward. Highly recommended, and if you really enjoy this I suggest going back and playing their earlier title Penumbra as well. There are 2 add-ons to Penumbra too, 1st is a good compliment, 2nd is just puzzles no story.

Dishonoured: I loved this game. Got it for Xmas from partner after a friend recommended it to me. If you like being stealthy and dropping on enemies from a great height or taking them down from the shadows, this is for you. First-person, bloody action set in London around the time of the plague. The special/spiritual abilities add another dynamic to the game and when you get really adept at using them it's a blast zipping around the levels dispatching everyone you come across. If you're ready for a real challenge, get the DLC as well, and I mean, only if you want a real challenge. It took me a further 2-3 weeks to get clear all challenges with 3 stars on both normal and expert. I lost some of my sanity at the same time as well. The Steam achievements are definitely a real test. Great gaming experience as a whole though.

Fallout 3/Fallout New Vegas: Personally I loved both, hard to pick, which I loved more but probably 3 as I played it first and it was my introduction to the series and how massive a single-player/offline gaming world can be. If you like a mix of first-person action with RPG elements, character developement/customisation and a huge gaming world with well designed areas then go for this. I spent around 200 hours seeing everything across number 3 and the expansions but loved every minute of it. Fallout New Vegas continues where Fallout 3 leaves off and is essentially more of the same with a bigger map, more to see and do, more endings/quests and the like. The expansions and multiple endings leave you with lots to do. Depends what you're into really. If you liked 3, I'd say get NV, but definitely get 3 first.

If you want to try both Fallout 3 and Fallout 2, I suggest playing 3 first. If you play 2 first then go to 3 you're going to be constantly thinking how everything was dumbed down and is childish and that the plot makes zero sense (the plot is a poor rehash of Fallouts 1 and 2 combined in a nonsensical way).

What made fallout 2 was not graphics. What makes the game is that you face adult issues with realistic options, and even when trying your best to make things go right, they can still spiral out of control, especially if you did not explore enough and think of the consequences. In every RPG since Fallout 2 every choice you have is the good choice (which in the real world could not possibly work), the evil choice, and the do nothing choice. In fallout 2 you also get real world choices. You actually have to figure things out. There is a definitive "beat the game" ending, but you're going to have to do a lot of exploring to find it and figure out how to do it. It's not like fallout 3 where you just need to remember a Bible passage... You can play through the game and miss 80% of the content, then you play through again and go "Holy SHIT how did I miss all this the first time!", then you play through again and say, "Holy SHIT how did I miss all this the first and second time!"

The game starts out pretty simple, but grows more complex town after town. You actually start out as part of a tribe devoted to the worship of the character in Fallout 1. Because of this I find playing Fallout 1 to have this surreal feeling since in 2 the character that you are playing was treated as a god, and now you are that god. Unfortunately 1 is a considerably smaller game than 2 and lacks content, but the interactions you have with others are more realistic than any other game besides Fallout 2, and is still fun to play.

You can do anything you can possibly imagine in fallout 2. Want to be a pornstar? Sure you can! Want your wife to be a pornstar? You can make that happen too! Don't want people to get pregnant? Make sure you have condoms! Want to save the world? You can do that too but it's very complicated. You can shoot anyone you want at any time. There's usually a dialog option to say what you're thinking of saying, and many more that are likely better than what you personally thought of saying.

Wow that is exactly what I am looking for. Thanks so much for writing all that. Really appreciate it. I will definitely buy Fallout 2 off Steam immediately :)

If you like to play RPG, Kingdoms of Amalur Reckoning will be okay.

It has long game, many quests and huge world map, more likely Fable the lost Chapter with the fantasy.

I've played Amalur and whilst the combat was fun the story was utterly weak and disappointing. Thanks for the suggestion though.

So, it looks like you have a few games on your list now but I'll add one or maybe two more.

Reading through the thread it seems like your video game preferences run fairly similar to mine. I was pretty wrapped up by Bioshock Infinite and Dishonored left me a bit cold.

I want to suggest that you take another shot at Far Cry 3. That game totally surprised me. I honestly didn't expect to like it all that much and for the first couple/few hours I wasn't sure if I wanted to keep playing (although the intro with Vaas and your brother and escaping the "pirates" was intense). But that game just... opens up to you, once you get through the initial BS and first couple story missions. There is an openness and freedom to the world you're in that I have possibly never experienced in a game previously.

I'm not sure what issues you had specifically with FC3 (story, game mechanics, feel, difficulty, etc.) but it's possible that they might be resolved further along in the game or (if mechanics/gameplay) resolvable by mods or other methods.

Just don't want you to miss what I thought was a really phenomenal game experience, if I can help it.

OK, that out of the way, I can make my other recommendation. You may have already played this, but if not, you must do so!

XCOM: Enemy Unknown

It's like, doubleplusgood. Hardcore, take no sh*t awesome.

And it likes to kill you (well, your squad members. All of them. In two turns when you thought you had the fight down cold. Leaving you crying and shaking like a little girl with a skinned knee).

Anyway, good luck. And if you've got any Far Cry 3 questions or whatever, I'm your answerman.

Don't forget to install a fanmade patch! Around 10% of the game content is actually broken in the final official patch, but there's so much content that it's hard to notice :)

patches here:

http://www.nma-fallout.com/forum/dload.php?action=category&cat_id=16

Install just killap's patch. It also includes the resolution patch. The resolution patch doesn't do very much since the textures are low res anyway, but it does help some.
