AMD Introduces the World’s Fastest Notebook Graphics Card

Heads up gaming notebook fans, AMD has just announced the release of its newest and fastest mobile graphics chip, the Radeon 8970M. This chip, like its predecessor Radeon 7970M, is built on the GCN architecture and continues to feature AMD Enduro graphics switching technology.

AMD is emphasizing GCN's strength in compute performance (see our 7970M Crossfire vs 680M SLI review) with the 8970M as well as DX 11.1 support. Finally, this new GPU should still be built on the same 28nm process as the 7970M with GDDR5 memory on a 256 bit bus. Max TDP should still be 100W.

So its basically a rebadged 7970M with 900 MHz boost added for a WHOPPING 6% increase over 7970M LOL!! NVIDIA is going to bury them this next round with the 780M.

Are the graphs misleading? It shows such a huge difference in performance, but the specs don't really speak for that kind of difference...

On another note, it seems that the 780m will indeed crush it.

exactly...its just a way to make money...They couldnt bring out a 7990M because the number would look so old, so 8970M looks newer since 680M went 780M lol..

I hate rebranded cards. That's what caused the whole naming fiasco with the gtx 600m & mx cards

Not sure why they are trying to compete against a 680M when the card they are in direct competition with is the 780M. Their card for competing with the 680M was the 7970M.

i wonder if they've fixed enduro issues this time around? 7970m's performance was severely crippled by enduro and it took amd 9-10 months to release drivers to improve performance (i say improved, because its not completely fixed yet.. a whole year after the card was launched)

Hopefully Amd can make good drivers for the card. I currently have the 7970m and its been nothing but a driver issue to deal with. Don't get me wrong it plays everything at high setting just fine now. But it took them forever to get it running correctly. I prefer NVidia over amd but could not justify $300 price difference at the time of purchase to go with Nvidia.

AMD recently put the 13.8 beta up on their site with "frame pacing" advertised to reduce frame stutter. I wonder if this new frame pacing will be supported when they release this new GPU.

I'm pretty unbiased toward nVidia and AMD. I have an m17x with 580m and m18x with 580m sli (soon to be 780m sli), and two self built desktops with 3x MSI Lightning 6970s in trifire and 2x Diamond 5870s in xfire respectively.

I've had multi card issues with both nVidia and AMD, with AMD being more annoying to deal with (micro stutter, Crysis 3 tessellation issues etc). I've always supported the underdog though.
