Wasted money on a new purchase?

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I just ordered a new EON 17 SLX this morning. The specs are pasted below.

One of my biggest concerns is about the new chips + video cards coming out this quarter.

I feel like I wasted almost 2.7k on a laptop that will not be cutting edge in a few months.

Please please let me know what you guys think. Do I wait for a couple more months or is this purchase good enough to last me a long time.

Well its a nice notebook but Origin does overprice their stuff due to the fancy paint job. Also the 700M series is coming soon which should have additional shader cores vs the current 680M. Personally I would advise against getting 7970M Crossfire because Crossfire has latency issues and it also drops frames (runt frames) so you essentially see high frame rate on your counter but in reality its nearly half that in many cases. I'd advise you to cancel it and strongly consider going nvidia.

Yeah the biggest problem is the crossfire. If getting just 1 card then a 7970m is fine, but 2 is no go (oddly though 3 works fine in desktops).

I'm not expecting the next graphics card refresh to be significant, and haswell doesn't seem to be that much faster than ivy bridge from leaked results so far. In my opinion it depends on what you have now. As long as you at least have a fermi based card and a high end 1st gen i7 quad I would wait. Any worse though and I would just get something now.

Yeah, frankly, the only reason I just bought a new laptop was because it was $1500. Got a 3630QM, 16GB RAM, 680M, on the FHD 3D screen for freaking nothing. If you plan on paying closer to $3000 for a laptop, wait until the next generation. Origin hasn't lowered their prices on them and it's quite sad to get one now.
