Tech Inferno Fan
It's possible, but a waste imho. Your system isn't x1.2Opt capable. That is, there is no iGPU and the expresscard is only pci-e 1.x capable. You'd need a Series-6 (Sandy Bridge or newer) for a pci-e 2.0 capable mPCIe/expresscard slot. Your system has no capable to enable the iGPU either. Running at x1 1.0 eGPU would perform poorly compared to your HD5870 CF.I'd only suggest you consider an eGPU if you find you are *at least* x1 2.0 capable. That would mean combining mPCIe+mPCIe or expresscard+mPCIe ports. Though the overall complexity and cost may be such that it would be more cost effective to offload the m17xR2 for a better eGPU candidate system. See some suggested ones in my sig. Khenglish
Despite being older your laptop still supports modern internal cards like the 680m and 7970m. The 780m does not work though, but the 680m and 7970m are still very strong cards.
