Back with a question already... :)

Can anyone recommend a particular brand/model of 2x8GB dual-channel memory for the 2570p? I'd like something low voltage/low latency, as phillofoc suggests above (except I need 16GB instead of 8GB; can't find a 16GB version of the ADATA).

Have you tried pulling the keyboard and cleaning the motherboard contacts with isopropyl alcohol? Check the disassembly guide, but all you should need to do is pull the fan, unscrew the 3 keyboard screws, then push on the keyboard through the hole left by the fan. I had the slight delay issue a long time ago, not sure how I fixed it. Odd as it sounds, try updating the touchpad drivers (using the drivers from HP, NOT Synaptics) and hotkey as the keyboard and touchpad are both on PS2 ports.

I tried the drivers, but no dice. The odd thing is that this ONLY happens when I type on the built-in keyboard. If I plug an external keyboard, it makes no odd noises. Additionally, I have confirmed that the sounds being produced are not native to the windows sound scheme I have enabled. It sounds rather like a bubble popping softly and then the occasional and much louder DUN-DUN. There also doesn't seem to be any specific pattern to the sounds, it just occurs randomly as I am typing.

Could this be a sign of a failing keyboard or am I missing something important here?

Huh. Does this happen when you boot into safe mode or into Linux? My keyboard is squeaky but by no means makes sounds in Windows. If no sounds in safe mode and Linux, maybe you have a prank malware or some sort of setting configured to monitor activity on PS2 keyboards. You can kill two birds with one stone by downloading and burning an antivirus ISO; I like Avira: Download Avira Rescue System | Official Website

Have you contacted HP for their help? They might have seen this before.

Ah! I finally fixed it. Surprisingly, I had checked this earlier, but had made a crucial mistake. As basic troubleshooting, if you open up sound mixer, you can see all programs currently playing sound that has notified windows. However, I had several programs and one was hidden off the visible area of the sound mixer and I had forgotten to scroll to check all of the programs. Luckily, just as I was about to do a complete fresh install of Windows, I checked it one last time and this time noticed the program causing the errors. After I had done a fresh install of Windows, I had also installed all of the HP security tools so I could utilize the fingerprint scanner. HP security manager itself uses the DigitalPersona verification solution to implement the fingerprint scanner. This was the program that was giving me headaches. DPAgent.exe is one troublesome program. It was picking up keystrokes apparently (which is worrisome enough) and generating random noise (sounds like a malware). I had to go into the registry to change several key values in order to prevent it from starting up (It isn't listed among the run at startup programs). All in all, thank god I figured out the issue and now if anyone else has the same problem, I've saved them a whole lot of HEADACHES. P.S. @Nando So sad to hear about HP not continuing the 12" line. I guess we'll be owning this laptop for some time.

On another note, I just recently received my HP 2570p hard drive caddy! I'm thinking about swapping in a 128GB SSD to boot off of and using the HDD that it came with as my storage in the drive caddy. Do you guys have any recommendations for cheap 128GB SSD's?

@Nando So sad to hear about HP not continuing the 12" line. I guess we'll be owning this laptop for some time.

Indeed. After getting nowhere asking for a ZBook 12, I've pleaded with the product manager to at least give us a Haswell systemboard. What a revelation it would be for HP to produce 2570P successor based on internet-derived feedback.

I was surprised at the other candidates he listed as a 2570P replacement . None hit the important target areas (for me anyway!):

12.5" 820 G1 - this is a 12.5" 2170P successor, not 2570P successor. ULV, no ODD, soldered CPU, no external PCIe

13/14" Probook 400/600 - no external PCIe connectivity, expresscard or TBT

14" Zbook 14 - no external PCIe, expresscard or TBT. Who signed off on this?

15/17" ZBook - too big but has external PCIe, both expresscard and TBT

I've also had correspondance with the senior support engineer asking the pertinent questions to get the most out of our machines inc 45W i7-quad upgradability, better heatsinks and unlocked voltage, wiring up those unbridged WWAN lines - whether it's mSATA or pcie, unwhitelisting WWAN. First reply disregarded all my other questions and pretty much said "2570P is engineered as a 35W system so can't help with 45W use", then listed the above Haswell Elitebooks as performance upgrades.

I'm hopeful his second reply will address the questions on how to get maximum mileage out of the 2570P.

2570P forerunner to thin-and-light workstation class of machine?

Our 12.5" 2570P was the forerunner to what looks like a new class of system: thin-and-light workstations. The 14" ZBook and 15" Dell Precision M3800 both with i7-quad CPUs are this new class. They differ to our 2570P by offering dGPUs and high res LCDs. However, unlike the 2570P neither has external PCIe in the form of an expresscard or Thunderbolt port nor is there an optical drive. An eGPU attached to a 2570P's expresscard slot will outbench all dGPUs they have on offer by a considerable margin.

Since the 2570P isn't thin, but is small I refer to it as 'small and mighty' :) Only other unit in that class being the 35W i7-quad equipped 13" Sony Z3 which also came with a FHD LCD and a ultrabook-like thin-and-light chassis. While it lacks weight it also misses out on a expresscard/TBT port as well as Mil-spec durability. Sony being Sony was a costly unit.

Ok now that I've had this rugged & capable 6-cell Elitebook for a week or so, I must say I'm surprised at how noticeably heavier it seems (vs. my older 2530p with the biggest battery, as well as our older Lenovo X60 series unit). I had read the reviews and was of course expecting a somewhat heavier unit, but I must say - in daily use - boy this 2570p is pretty darn hefty for an ultraportable! :adoration: Really feel it in my backpack when I travel My wife, who ultimately "inherits" my ultraportables when I upgrade to something else, has even commented that she's not sure she'd want to lug this around one day.

I'll deal with it, but I'm wondering - has anyone here removed their 2570p optical drive and experienced much reduction in weight? That is, does the 2570p seem appreciably lighter without the DVD multi-drive installed? And - strange question, I know - is there anything else non-essential that can be removed to put this unit "on a diet"? I think shaving off even half a pound or so would make a noticeable difference.

2570P performance-enhancement questions for HP

Hi everyone, I've prepared my list of 2570P performance-enhancement questions in the spoiler below. These are to be presented to Ajay, the senior HP notebook engineer. Feel free to peruse and advise if there are any others you may have that could be added on too.

Hi Ajay,

Below I re-submit the questions I have for the 2570P engineers with the extra additions. There is no 12.5" 2570P Haswell successor, such as a ZBook 12, planned even after several attempts to request for one from Dion Weisler and Enrique Lores (notebook managers). Nor is there any planes to produce a systemboard that would allow 2570P owners to upgrade to Haswell internals. A shame as Apple's just-released Haswell offerings continue to include a 13" MBP for the optical drive. All others omitting an ODD which is where a 12" ZBook could get some traction.

Hence why the aim is really to maximize performance of the 2570P to workstation levels. Answers to the questions below would help with some of the discussion happening at <a href="http://forum.techinferno.com/hp-business-class-notebooks/2537-12-5-hp-elitebook-2570p-owners-lounge.html#post33901" target="_blank"><font>12.5" HP Elitebook 2570P Owner's Lounge</font></a> . Consider too 2570P designers are welcome to post their own personal research there that may help the discussion. I realize some answers of the intended modifications be best discussed outside of HP.

My contact details are xxx available during business hours GMT+10 (East coast Australia). Though you may find it easier to simply answer my questions via email.

<b>Technical details requested about the 2570P</b>

<u>Physical hardware modifications/upgrades</u>

1. <i>WWAN slot extra lines</i>: If the 2570P systemboard factory unbridged tracks in the WWAN slot are bridged (pin 23,25,31,33), does it give a mSATA or mPCIe electrical link? If it's mSATA, does the BIOS make provision upon detecting it to enable the corresponding port? If it's mPCIe what port number is it? Based on the <a href="http://www.mediafire.com/download/h571v826yilku1i/Inventec_Styx_MV.pdf" target="_blank">2560P schematic</a> I'm guessing it's a mPCIe port1. Someone with a 2570P schematic could answer that question.

2. <i>Better heatsink</i>: is there factory 2560P/2570P heatsink part that incorporates a second heatpipe for improved heat transfer? This would alleviate the need for heatsink mods, examples by <a href="http://forum.techinferno.com/hp-business-class-notebooks/2537-12-5-hp-elitebook-2570p-owners-lounge-17.html#post66384" target="_blank">Aikimox</a>, <a href="http://forum.techinferno.com/hp-business-class-notebooks/2537-12-5-hp-elitebook-2570p-owners-lounge-10.html#post64705" target="_blank">bjorm</a> & <a href="http://forum.techinferno.com/hp-business-class-notebooks/2537-12-5-hp-elitebook-2570p-owners-lounge-8.html#post64008" target="_blank">jacobsson's 'Anarchist'</a> to reduce fan activity or host a 45W i7-quad comfortably.

3. <i>Backlit keyboard retrofit</i>: is there anything in the HP part catalog that would fit the 2570P chassis perfectly, with adequate length ribbon cable. I realize that would require 5V or 3.3V to be patched to the backlight connector. The '820 G1' keyboard looks like it might be suitable.  REF:  <a href="http://forum.techinferno.com/hp-business-class-notebooks/2537-12-5-hp-elitebook-2570p-owners-lounge-25.html#post67598" target="_blank">Tech Inferno Fan</a>

4. <i>LCD panel upgrades</i>. We've had no success fitting the Lenovo X220/X230 IPS panel with wide viewing angles due to physical clearance issues. Is there any other wide-viewing angle panel that would fit in within the LCD bezel? Reference: <a href="http://forum.notebookreview.com/hp-business-class-notebooks/586353-hp-elitebook-2560p-owners-lounge-27.html#post9232151" target="_blank">bjorm</a> and <a href="http://forum.techinferno.com/hp-business-class-notebooks/2537-12-5-hp-elitebook-2570p-owners-lounge-16.html#post66222" target="_blank">pandaleo</a>

Or better yet any higher resolution panels (eg: Dell XPS 12.5" 1920x1080 LCD?). Higher resolution panels require a dual-channel LVDS electrical link which someone would need to confirm. Could someone review the schematic to advise? The 2560P had only single-channel LVDS good for 1366x768 but not higher so it's likely the 2570P is the same. REF: <a href="http://forum.techinferno.com/hp-business-class-notebooks/2537-12-5-hp-elitebook-2570p-owners-lounge-12.html#post65667" target="_blank">Tech Inferno Fan</a>

5. <i>Schematics and non-whitelisted BIOS for discontinued models</i>: A.J requests <i>ask them (HP) to consider unlocking the BIOS for all discontinued Elitebooks (2530p, 2540p, etc.- obviously, the 2570p will soon join the list of no longer made Elitebook models). Ask for schematics for all discontinued models as well... Since the enthusiast community here is pretty self-sufficient in solving many of its problems (given the right tools), this seems like a reasonable request, and could be a nice public relations move for HP. </i>

<u>BIOS enhancements</u>

1. <i>Fan noise</i>: can the fan RPM cut-in frequency be lowered from 3200rpm? It was necessary to do <a href="http://forum.techinferno.com/hp-business-class-notebooks/2537-12-5-hp-elitebook-2570p-owners-lounge-10.html#post64705" target="_blank">quiet_fan: 2x1N4004 diode mod (bjorm)</a> <a href="http://forum.techinferno.com/hp-business-class-notebooks/2544-hp-probook-4330s-working-silent-fan-mod.html" target="_blank">&</a> : as a workaround to reduce fan RPMs including cut-in RPMs

2. <i>Increasing CPU power limits</i>: can a BIOS be made to set a higher 45W (or completely unlocked) CPU power limits such that a user installed 45W i7-quad can be used at it's full performance? Currently the power limits are set to 35W which decreases the turbo max multiplier by 2 (200Mhz).

Some users are contemplating flashing a 8470/8570 bios with factory 45W i7-quad support and mSATA support to unlock these performance features. RSA bios protection making user modifications to the factory 2570P BIOS impossible.

If they did flash either of those bios, would it cause the system to hang?

3. <i>Removing WWAN/bluetooth whitelist</i>: we've found that the<a href="http://forum.techinferno.com/hp-business-class-notebooks/2537-12-5-hp-elitebook-2570p-owners-lounge-25.html#post67796" target="_blank"> wifi whitelisting appears to be disabled</a>. Can the same be done for the <a href="http://forum.techinferno.com/hp-business-class-notebooks/2537-12-5-hp-elitebook-2570p-owners-lounge-23.html#post67475" target="_blank">WWAN and bluetooth whitelists</a> in an updated BIOS ?

phillofoc request: please keep the WLAN disabled whitelist in future BIOS updates.

4. <i>Enabling ASPMs for better battery life</i>: can <a href="http://forum.techinferno.com/hp-business-class-notebooks/2537-12-5-hp-elitebook-2570p-owners-lounge.html#post38399" target="_blank">INFO: 33% longer 2570P battery life by enabling ASPMs and L0s L1 using software</a> be added as a BIOS option in an updated BIOS revision? Contrary to my initial findings, there is no negative side-effect with the SD/MMC controller. Insertion of a SD card into the reader sees it re-appear in Device Manager.

I know it's a not very important issue, but I would enquiry HP about allowing BCLK overclocking. Of course, in order to use it with XTU. I realise, that we have genious Khenglish and his ME FW files, but.. I still haven't figured out how to enable the BCLK slider in XTU. It's a kind of a lottery, unfortunately.

It could be connected with raising the max. TDP allowed by the BIOS.

Oh, and maybe they would answer if BCLK OC affects EC PCIe frequency. Because if it does not, we would need only higher TDP limits to unleash the power of powerful i7 CPUs. This OC is really important for EC, because it could be the only way to increase eGPU bandwidth.

Thank you for the suggestion. While I'd love to ask about BCLK overclocking I can pretty safely say running a BUS beyond it's standard 100Mhz will get a flat 'unsupported' response. Even the 45W i7-quad CPU upgrade is a bit touchy since HP designed and tested the system with a 35W i5/i7.

Instead, Khenglish' 2570P BCLK ME firmware post advises:

After flashing XTU may need to be reinstalled to enable the BLCK slider.

I do not know if this BCLK overclocking also overclocks the PCH PCI-E for eGPUs. It would be nice if someone could test PCI-E bandwidth in SANDRA with a BCLK overclock to verify if it does or not. If not I can provide an additional mod which definitely will overclock the PCH PCI-E.

With the missing slider, does it occur with XTU 2.1 and XTU 3.x? It would be great if you can work with Khenglish to figure out what the 2570P limits are for pci-e overclocks. As you point out, success there would gain extra eGPU bandwidth.

Maybe HP could at least tell us, if there is a point in looking for eGPU performance boost this way. If it gives us a 0% chance of overclocking PCIe, there's no reason to further investigate this issue, as I don't even have a i7 QM, which would be limited by TDP.

Wasn't there a 2570p (somewhere on Ebay) with 45W i7? Correct me if I'm wrong.

I tried every version of XTU. Reinstalled it dozens of times. Before the flash, there was at least a greyed out slider. Then, it disappeared and I can't get it to appear again. Khenglish said there's some voodoo needed to do it... so, it makes me wonder, why this reinstallation method worked for Aikimox.

Yeah the BCLK slider missing is a mystery to me. After having to reinstall windows my slider is now gone and I can't get it back either...

Worst case, please keep the WLAN disabled whitelist in future BIOS updates. I just tried an Intel 1000 and Atheros AR5B91 I had laying around. Both showed in the BIOS as TEST WLAN and showed in Windows. Safe to say that the whitelisting is broken or disabled.

Great effort, M8! Alas, we all know the answer. If HP honors you with a reply, it will probably be somewhere in the "not tested, not supported, not designed, no..." ballpark :(

I'd be surprised if the was a constructive and positive feedback from them (or any other vendor for that matter). Still, crossing fingers and toes wherever possible. Good luck! :)

Here's a suggestion for you Nando4... now that you have HP's ear (temporarily at least), ask them to consider unlocking the BIOS for all discontinued Elitebooks (2530p, 2540p, etc.- obviously, the 2570p will soon join the list of no longer made Elitebook models). Ask for schematics for all discontinued models as well.

Since the enthusiast community here is pretty self-sufficient in solving many of its problems (given the right tools), this seems like a reasonable request, and could be a nice public relations move for HP.

In order to even have a chance for this to happen though, we should probably first demonstrate that there's an actual demand. Perhaps an online petition asking for these things. All current 25xxp users on the forums could sign it. Spread the word here, at NBR, etc and get a few hundred signatures. I'd sign in a heartbeat.

Just an idea. But even if we only get the schematics, it'd be worth doing, no?

I've added this and phillofoc's suggestion to the list. FYI: I have 2510P, 2530P, 2540P, 2560P leaked schematics already. Only one missing is 2570P which I figure will be pretty much the same as the 2560P except with a 16MB BIOS chip (not 8MB), has USB 3.0 as part of the newer Series-7 chipset and of course the Ivy Bridge CPU.

As for non-whitelisted BIOS the situation is as follows:

* 2510P, 2530P - whitelist disabled modded bios is available but only flashable if you have existing bios older than F.20. HP's newest F.20 or newer bios a trap to prevent rollback to the earlier modifieable bios. REF: http://forum.techinferno.com/hp-business-class-notebooks/4771-dual-ida-bios-25x0p-27x0p-65x0-67x0-69x0-85x0-87x0-hdx9000.html#post66863

* 2540P, 2560P - not possible to boot a modded bios due to HP's RSA protection. Last I tested the 2560P had a WLAN whitelist active.

* 2570P - oddly, the WLAN whitelist is either broken or disabled as discussed. However, WWAN and Bluetooth whitelist appear intact.

WLAN/WWAN/bluetooth whitelisting is an effective built-in redundancy mechanism forcing users to upgrade their system to get newer comms standard support. Thankfully we 2570P owners with F.41/F.42 BIOS can upgrade to 802.11AC WLAN due to the disabled WLAN whitelist. Hope HP doesn't fix this and eliminate feature.

Anybody with another Ivy Bridge Elitebook (8470P/W, 8570P/W, 8770W) want to test to see if the whole Ivy Bridge Elitebooks have WLAN whitelisting disabled? Maybe we are just lucky with our system?

On a different note (and still showing the flexibility of these little units)...

A few weeks ago over on TonyMacx86's site, user Tyraenor reported getting a fully running version of OS 10.8.5 (minus WiFi) on a 2570p.

Just follow this guide: HP Probook 6470b

Here is my selection in ProBook Installer:

After doing this do not reboot until you installed the four kexts from the guide above (AppleHDA, Intel...Capri, Bluetooth, IntelE1000)

That's it. Fully working 2570p 10.8.4 (except WiFi).

If you want to update to 10.8.5 you need to do the following to get all working:

* Reinstall ProBook installer like above (except Chameleon)

* Reinstall the four kexts

* Install IOBluetoothFamily.kext from 10.8.4

Now you have fully working 10.8.5!

Note it may be possible to get the WiFi working by swapping in an OSX compatible WiFi card - not sure if anyone's tried that yet (or if there would be whitelist issues). I assume you could just use one of those tiny USB WiFi dongles instead of going through that hassle.

Again, if there's any interest in Hackintoshs here - this is pretty exciting news. Thought I'd mention it.

INFO: 2570P weight loss

Almost missed this post. I too noticed a weight gain going from a 2530P to a 2560P/2570P. Difference now is that accompanying my 2570P is a smartphone which is great for quick internet browsing. The 2570P gets pulled out for more substantial work where I value the 2570P's desktop-replacement performance features and associated weight penalty over say say a light, nimble, underperforming ultrabook with very limited expansion/upgrade potential. The 2570P Quickspecs tells us:

4orj.png

Easiest weight loss could be accomplished by removing the ODD, using a smaller battery and replacing a HDD with lighter SSD. Could even up-spec the battery to one 3-cells larger and omit carrying the AC adapter to bring weight down if the battery can provide the runtime you need before a recharge.

If removing the ODD then the option of filling the space with an optical bay space saver as described here. Can also use an empty 9.5mm SATA optical bay caddy, best with a detachable faceplate so can fit the 2570P optical drive one for a perfect appearance. The benefit with the caddy being it's (1) cheaper than HP's plastic kit containing the space saver and (2) have the option to add a second SSD/HDD to your system. Only negative may be it might be a touch heavier than the space saver. Can even relocate the primary drive into the caddy thereby slightly lightening again and gain better weight distribution. Slightly lighter since you could then remove the primary drive bay caddy, SATA angle connector and a couple of screws. Though I doubt those items weigh in at anymore than 30grams. Small gains nonetheless.

<ul><li> HDD = 0.11kg / 0.24lbs (from M&S guide)

<li>optical drive = 0.12kg/0.26lbs

<li>3-cell battery = 0.15kg/0.33lbs

<li>6-cell battery = 0.30kg/0.66lbs

<li> 9-cell battery = 0.45kg/0.99lbs</ul>

To drop more weight consider these, presented in order of practical impementation difficulty:

<ol><li>remove blank plates: expresscard, modem

<li>remove unused internal modules accessible through easy rear service cover removal : modem, WLAN, WWAN, bluetooth

<li>remove your drive caddy by separating your SSD/HDD and taping it down instead. Consider deshelling a SSD for even less weight.

<li>remove silver keyboard overlay revealing the black base. Also a way of changing your 2570P's appearance.

<li>remove unused internal modules requiring disassembly: smart card reader, fingerprint reader

<li>drop cooling subsystem weight with holey bottom cover, heatsink mod & shorten heatpipe with repositioned fan (advanced)

</ol>

Location photos of internal modules are available at the HP Media Services Library.

<b>Lightening the AC adapter</b>

The stock 65W AC adapter is a pretty heavy unit. Total carry weight can be decreased by upgrading your battery to the next size up (+3 cells, 0.15kg/0.33lb), forgo carrying the AC adapter and recharge once back at your home/hotel/office. If doing that consider the battery life tweaks available here to extend your range. Other options:

<ol><li>Use a lighter AC adapter accesssory specifically for our Elitebook. Note: 45W included in list for weight comparison sake. It's incapable of powering and charging a 2570P.

Thanks for this thorough write-up... a very useful addition to this thread's already comprehensive coverage of the 2570p (is there a dedicated Elitebook wiki somewhere? if so, the info at the top of this thread could create an awesome 2570p Wiki page).

So it looks like I'll be deep sixing the optical drive - .26 lbs is a decent weight savings. I never use it anyway. Also I already have an SSD, so the OD seems like the only "heavy" item I can ditch. If I remove the optical drive assembly, what do people use to "cover" the hole on the side of the laptop? Can the front part of the OD be removed and reattached somehow? Or is there another way...?

Cool tip on that slim AC adapter - had no idea those existed. If only they were cheaper!

No 2570P wiki that I'm aware of. Besides, I refer to owner's threads like this to get the nuggets of info I require or engage in discussion on tidbits of interest.

Use the optical drive bay space saver included in the plastics kit to cover the hole if ditching the optical drive. Details here.

EDIT: or alternatively use an empty optical bay caddy as A.J is proposing to do in the next post. That leaves the option of equipping it with a second SSD/HDD down the track. Is a bit cheaper than HP's 2570P plastics kit too.

I'd too would grab a slim AC adapter if it was cheaper. Quite a few Dell systems come with them as standard equipment. Wish HP would do the same.

Thanks again Nando... I just read through your FAQ link above (about the optical drive weight saver), and the best option for me might be to add a drive caddy, attach my OD's existing faceplate to it, and then just leave the caddy empty. I'm guessing the empty drive caddy might weigh a hair more than HP's plastic spacer - but probably not much, and it leaves me the option to add a second SSD if I choose at some point down the road.

I did notice that the link for the Fenvi drive caddy (in your FAQ above) has gone dead. The working link below is (I think) the same 2570p compatible Fenvi drive caddy you mention in the FAQ - incidentally, pretty affordable too at $13.98 shipped (at least here in the States):

Yes, a optical bay caddy with a detachable faceplate so you can swap the optical drive faceplate for a perfect appearance is a good way to fill the space if removing the ODD. Gives you the flexibilty of adding a second drive if want all at a cheaper price than the HP Plastics Kit.

Can even relocate the primary drive into the caddy thereby slightly lightening again and gain better weight distribution. 8470/8570 has broken WLAN whitelist? If not, maybe an owner would crossflash a 2570P BIOS?

We know that our system has a broken WLAN whitelist. We don't know if 8470P/8570P have the same good fortune. If not, then perhaps advising those owners may see someone try to cross flash our bios onto their system. If they have success then it's likely the reverse is true and we can crossflash their bios onto our systems to gain their increased 45W i7-quad power limits.

HP conference advises bridging the 2570P WWAN tracks (pin 23, 25,31,33) result in a mSATA cache slot

Was advised we'd get a mSATA cache slot (SATA port 2, SATA-II 3Gbps) if bridge those tracks along with BIOS support. I've email requested more details which I'll post when I receive along with a summary of the conference call. Though can say this was the only item in the conference that extends our knowledge of 2570P systems.

Note: if wanting to try to enable this mSATA slot then I've seen discussion in 8470/8570 threads saying that their system has no BIOS boot support for their mSATA SSD. They can use it either cache drive to speed up mechanical drives OR can boot by proxy. That is, they need to boot off another drive pointing the BCD to the mSATA drive to run their OS completely off the mSATA drive.

If you really want the space savings, the official HP plastics kit is $17.99 before shipping. I ordered a replacement DVD kit back in January so I could get the faceplate and shipping was 11.25. I can't imagine that shipping would be much worse than that as your kit would be lighter than my DVD kit.

Worst case, you go with the ODD caddy and save a few bucks.
