Tech Inferno Fan July-2015>> Anybody interested in the 12.5" 2570P should also consider a 14" Dell E6430. The E6430 is the superior performance platform due to it's 900P LCD option, NVidia dGPU option, unlockable turbo bins (+400Mhz) on i7-37xxQM/i7-38xxQM CPUs and x2 2.0 eGPU capability. All with a minor size/weight penalty. See http://forum.techinferno.com/dell-la...tml#post118135 for details.

Welcome to the 2570P Owner's Lounge! A place to liase with other owners and share useful tips/tricks/mods to get the most satisfying user experience from this exceptional ultraportable notebook.

A 2570P can be had for as little as US$250 on ebay-US , still with remaining 3yr global onsite warranty. A bargain when you consider it's upgraded desktop-replacement performance and durable MIL-spec build in a small 12.5" package. A features set unmatched by any other Ivy Bridge or Haswell notebook that remains undisclosed by all online reviews and even by HP. Grab one before word gets out . 2570P highlights being:

  • socketted CPU allows a easy user upgrade up to a 45W i7-quad, doubling i5/i7 dual-core CPU performance. The result of doing so being the smallest, most powerful systems available that can function as a desktop replacement. Ultraportable competitors like a 12-14" Lenovo X230/X1C/T430s, Dell E6230/E6330, Toshiba R930/R940 or 13" Macbook Pro all have soldered dual-core i5/i7 CPUs making CPU upgrades unfeasible. Need to upsize to a larger 14" Lenovo T430/T440 or (preferrably) a Dell E6440 to get a socketted CPU.

  • rare 5Gbps expresscard slot allows implementing a ~$160 [email protected] DIY eGPU for gaming graphics, CUDA/OpenCL processing or driving more external LCDs.

  • optical drive can be swapped with a second 2.5" 9.5mm SATA-III 6Gbps SSD or HDD in a caddy & in a JBOD, RAID-0 (performance) or RAID-1 (redundancy) configuration. Can have up to 4TB of internal storage (2x2TB 9.5mm). Or RAID-0 2xSSDs for superfast boot-times and > 1GB/s sequential transfers.

  • eSATAp port allows external bootable SSD/HDD to be attached using a single eSATAp cable. Ultra convenient when you consider USB-only systems like Macbooks require complicated software workarounds to get a Win7/8 disk booted off their USB ports.

  • upgradeable wifi : can upgrade to recently-released 802.11AC standard with a Broadcom BCM4352 or Intel 7260 HMW card as explained.

  • internal WWAN/3G capable : install a whitelisted WWAN/3G card, insert a mobile SIM and surf the internet anywhere

  • battery options include a 31Wh 3-cell, 62Wh 6-cell (9hrs) and 100Wh 9-cell battery (15hrs)

  • is listed by laptopmag as a top 5 HP laptop of 2013 (Dec-2013) and top 10 business notebook (Apr-2013)

Comparison: http://forum.techinferno.com/what-no...html#post34610 concludes the 2570P is the best one.

Comparison: 12.5" HP 820 G1 (Haswell: 4th-gen i-core) versus 2570P (Ivy Bridge: 3rd gen i-core) in spoiler:

Spoiler

HP's 2013 successor to the 2570P, the "820 G1" is yet another take on an ultrabook thin but with business features and better LCD panels. The thinness and low weight targets have resulted in the 2570P's performance features being sacrificed: upgradeable CPU, ODD for second HDD/SSD, RAID-0/1 support, 5Gbps expresscard slot for eGPU use and probably the upgradeable wifi all gone!! A '820 G1' is a performance downgrade from a 2570P. It is more of a 12.5" successor to the ULV 2170P than the 2570P. What a disappointment from HP.

Hence why a request for HP to make a Haswell 2570P successor, a "ZBook 12" was emailed. REF: Request for "ZBOOK 12" emailed to HP PSG head executive and reply received. The ZBook 14/15/17 range are HP's chunkier high performance 2013 Haswell notebook range this is missing a 12.5" unit.

Unfortunately the end result of that conversation being that in 12.5" there will only be a ULV "820 G1". The recommendation is to look at a 14" Probook 600 as being the smallest Haswell 2570P replacement. It has a socketted CPU, dual-drives, better HD/FHD panels and even a dGPU option. No expresscard slot though. The 12.5" 2570P small-and-mighty form factor being discontinued.

I can't help but ask who marketted the 2560P/2570P? They'd win awards for stealth marketting since the 2560P/2570P was severly under-represented against the Lenovo X220/X230.

Comparison: 12.5" HP 2570P (Ivy Bridge: 3rd gen i-core) versus 2560P (Sandy Bridge: 2nd gen i-core)

Spoiler

Difference between these systems is minor but in nearly all cases favors the 2570P. Hence no surpise the newer 2570P is a costlier unit.

- 2560P is TDP limited to 36W making i7-quad CPUs run at significantly lower-than-specced 4-core turbo frequencies. 2570P is TDP limited to 45W so can run their CPUs near their specced 4-core turbo frequency. REF: http://forum.techinferno.com/hp-busi...html#post79495

- 2560P uses a latch to secure the LCD down resulting in the top cover having latch cutouts as well as latches visible on the LCD bezel. 2570P uses magnets instead. The 2570P's omission of the latches and cutouts giving a cleaner LCD bezel and top cover appearance.

- 2570P nightlight gives a better spread across the keyboard.

- 2570P is RAID storage capable. 2560P is not.

- 2570P can host either a 35W/45W Ivy Bridge CPU or Sandy Bridge CPU. 2560P can only host a Sandy Bridge CPU. Ivy Bridge having the faster HD4000 iGPU and is built using the more power efficient 22nm lithography. There are efficient 35W quad-core Ivy Bridge CPUs. There are no 35W quad-core Sandy Bridge CPUs.

- 2570P has the newer Series-7 chipset which include USB 3.0. 2560P uses a Series-6 chipset with no USB 3.0

- 2560P does however have lower idle power consumption. I could get under 5W with one whereas the best a 2570P can do is 5.4W. This is probably due to USB 3.0 controller on the 2570P.

- 2570P supports DDR3L RAM. 2560P *I believe* does not.

- 2570P has a buggy WLAN bios whitelist allowing any WLAN cards to be used. 2560P only allows whitelisted WLAN cards to be used.

- 2570P has newer WWAN/Bluetooth whitelist cards.

- 2570P has boot Upgrade Bay bios option. 2560P doesn't by default - requires biosconfigutility.exe to set hidden option

Performance upgrade: i7-quad CPU resulting in 'IVB ZBook 12' or 'EXtremeBook'

Can effectively double the CPU performance going from a factory i5/i7 dual core to a i7-quad CPU. Could also be desirable if you wish to lower fan noise and temps. Running a i7-quad with max 99% CPU utilization results in noticably cooler temps than their dual-core counterparts without loss of performance, eg: cool i7-quads by bjorm's i7-3632QM or Aikimox's i7-3840QM. Note: warranty implications of a CPU upgrade - a factory-specced faster dual core up to i7-3520M 2.9 will not void warranty while a i7-quad will void the warranty if HP know about it as it wasn't offered with one. I'd keep the original CPU back and swap it back in if necessary. Upgraded 2570P i7-quad system examples are shown in the table above.

NOTE: A 45W CPU can have highest multiplier limited to a 35W CPU level using Throttlestop software. That means a 45W i7-3630QM/i7-3610M (turbo=3.4/3.3Ghz) runs like a 35W i7-3632QM/i7-3612QM (turbo=3.2/3.1Ghz). Best 45W i7-quads being a i7-3630QM (x32) , i7-3720QM (x34) and i7-3740QM/3820QM (x35). There is at max 9% 4-core peformance difference between these with the higher end ones often not being able to maintain their upper multipliers as shown here. Meaning, suggest grab whichever is available and of lowest cost in your area.

The 4-core TDP limit means any faster 45W CPUs do not see any gains. If need more performance and have deeper pockets then consider purchasing a 55W i7-3920XM instead. It has an additional 10W heatroom for turbo. Though it will absolutely need cooling mods to be able to accomodate at that level. <- 55W CPU is being limited to 45W on a 2570P as shown.

It's possible to get and install cheaper PGA-to-BGA converted i7-quad CPUs as demonstrated by pandaleo.

Performance upgrade: external graphics (eGPU)

DIY eGPU to attach a desktop videocard via the 2570P's 5Gbps expresscard slot. Provides accelerated gaming graphics, CUDA/OpenCL processing and additional HDMI/DVI outputs to drive multiple monitors.

To do this most users only need to set System configuration->Device configuration expresscard slot from Generation 1 to Generation 2 as shown below:

Gqc0Oho.jpg

A NVidia GTX460/560/660/670 is a straight plug-n-play implementation on a 2570P when using Windows 7, though Win8.x is problematic (src: here). Win8.x users may consider doing a UEFI installation instead which resolved error12 and gave hotplug capabilities as noted here.

An AMD card, GTX650, GTX750, GTX9xx or older NVidia cards require a DSDT override and (maybe) DIY eGPU Setup 1.x interposer software to eradicate error 12 that prevents their functionality. See the 2570P DSDT override details if using one of these cards.

Implemented on a 2570P at x1.2Opt speed (5Gbps + compression) using a NVidia GTX670 (jacobsson), GTX660Ti (Tech Inferno Fan), GTX560Ti (bjorm), GTX660 (dewos), GTX560Ti (hatoblue), GTX650Ti (phillofoc)

2570P RAID-0 SSD guide (jacobsson) - get superfast bootup and 1GB/s sequential reads by configuring two SATA-III SSDs as a RAID-0 vol
US$4 eSATAp cable - connect to your SATA HDD/SSD to the 2570P's eSATAp (combo SATA+ USB 3.0) port for superfast bootable storage.
FAQ about optical drive space saver: can it's faceplate be used on other ODDs/caddies? Answer: no/yes.

System mod: LCD upgrade

The supplied LCD is a 12.5" single-LVDS TN panel,  HP P/N 685504-001 which is a AUO B125XW02 V.0 or Samsung LTN125AT02 with relatively narrow viewing angles and around 45% gamut.

X220/X230 IPS LCD retrofit with wide viewing angles: failed attempts by bjorm and pandaleo due to insufficient clearance
higher-resolution panels: not possible as HP has confirmed 2570P has only single-LVDS wired per details

System mods: cooling and fan quietening

Notebook FanControl - easier to configure than TPFanControl. Can set 2.5% (2825 rpm)-100% (5120 rpm) manual fan control or temperature-based rules. Nice. Though because there isn't a 2570P configuration item I use a HP 8560P or ZBook 15 instead.
troubadix's TPFanControl allows software fan step control though doesn't alter the cut-in RPMs which bjorm says is 3072rpm
quiet_fan: 2x1N4004 diode mod (bjorm) & : reduce fan RPMs including cut-in RPMs
heatsink mods: by Tech Inferno Fan's (copper-stack), Aikimox, bjorm & jacobsson's 'Anarchist' - improve heat transfer to reduce fan activity or host a 45W i7-quad comfortably
bjorm's holey bottom cover mod - improve airflow

System mod: BIOS inc WLAN/WWAN

Unfortunately the 2570P bios is RSA protected. Flashing a modified BIOS that say disables the WWAN whitelist results in system failing to boot. Nobody has successfully created a modified bios. REF: bios-mods.com.

WLAN/WWAN/Bluetooth whitelist : IDs of cards that the BIOS will allow boot with.
Confirmed Intel 6235 working in 2570P - it's between 0.5W to 1W more efficient than the stock Intel 6205 (M3ph15t)

Seems like a great review, but I can't help to think it's also quite a bit biased: the reviews that don't mention any cons are totally not to be trusted imo. :)

I also disagree with comparison to T430. T430 is a heaver 14" laptop, and 2570p can be directly compared to X230 instead:

- 2570p looks more sleek I suppose

- 2570p has much worse TN screen with average brightness of 166 nit (cd/m^2); conveniently left out from the review [ref: notebookcheck.com review]. This is a bit low compared to the average of 264 nit for IPS screen on X230. The viewing angles are listed as 150 degrees -- I have to say I laughed at this part since I know the laptop comes with a fairly poor TN screen.

- 2570p has replaceable CPU, but it is unclear to me through how many CPU generations this will last (my point is by the time you'll need faster CPU there will be much faster CPUs from subsequent generations on the market)

- 2570p runs 10 C colder than X230 (80C vs 90C) on full load. This is to me a fairly better and probably the biggest advantage.

- as configured X230 with IPS screen comes about $690+tax through Lenovo Barnes&Noble website (this is around $800 or just slightly below if you add that + shipping).

The way I see it, for $50 more (say X230 is $800 after taxes and shipping) you get a sexier looks and replaceable CPU, but a far worse TN instead of IPS screen (and you need to purchase 2570p from a fairly unknown third party merchant; otherwise the price will go up by ~$100). The cooling is a bit better in 2570p. Apart from that, 2570p and X230 are pretty much the same and the question becomes whether one is willing to trade the IPS screen (and $50) for improvements in other places.

I believe the reviewer compared it to a T430 because a 2570P weighs in close to a T430. It's heavier weight and HP's whitelisting of WWAN/wifi ports are the other disadvantages of a 2570P. Though I believe Lenovo whitelist their wifi/WWAN ports but unlike a 2570P, a hacked bios is usually available as a workaround.

You are on the mark with advantages of a 2570P plus do note that a 2570P can accomodate a 2.5" 9.5mm primary drive + either a optical drive or a second 2.5" 9.5mm primary drive via a caddy. A X230 uses a 7mm 2.5" drive + second mSATA drive. So a X230 has lower storage capacity with it's 7mm/mSATA drives which also happen to be higher cost per GB than their 9.5mm cousins.

A 2570P's upgradable CPU means if one puts a 45W i7-quad into it they'd get the smallest, most powerful system available in the current gen. Supports SATA-III RAID-0 across it's two drives (2.5" + 2.5" via optical caddy) too giving a very fast storage subsystem to match.

Gadgetsnute, a NBR Dell E6220 user dismissed a X220 because of it's looks but wanted the IPS LCD. He ended up retrofitting a IPS LCD into his E6220. REF: Latitude E6220 IPS screen replacement . I wonder if the same can be done with a 2570P/2560P? If HP offered IPS on their 2570P then it would be a no brainer for me - a X230 with it's dated looks and less durable build wouldn't even be on the radar.

In any case, a 2570P is a good one to keep on the radar once it trickles into the s/h market for it's upgradable CPU feature and business grade durability. Best if it still has some remainder of the higher-specced 3yr NBD onsite global warranty.

Yeah forgot about that -- good point about the drives. Even without RAID-0, one could go with just SSD + something like 1TB for storage drive (or just throw out the optical drive all together and reduce the weight). I don't mind the Thinkpad looks, but I think without the old school keyboard X-series has less and less going for it.

The X220/X230 IPS screens are available on eBay in ~$100 range; it would be interesting to try it out.

INFO: Battery life tweaks

Substantial battery life gains can be had by doing the following. I use Battstat or BatteryBar to measure instantaneous power consumption.

* Using a ramdisk for browser cache (phillofoc) : to extend battery life

* if have Intel 6205AGN installed then load the latest Intel driver. I'm using http://downloadmirror.intel.com/23186/eng/wireless_16.1.5_Ds64.exe and now get a nice 2.5W drop in power consumption when switch from AC to DC. Prior to that I was using HP's 2570P wifi driver which would only go into low power after a AC to DC switch if I disabled it in Device Manager. However, re-enabling it kicked power consumption back up. The HP driver is best avoided.

* better yet, use a US$34.95 Broadcomm BCM4352 802.11AC wifi card, suspected of being more efficient than Intel cards as documented at http://forum.techinferno.com/hp-business-class-notebooks/2537-12-5-hp-elitebook-2570p-owners-lounge-43.html#post79977 .

* enable ASPMs as discussed below. Decreases idle power consumption from 8W->6W (2W less). That's a lot.

* if enabling ASPMs then consider also setting card reader port3 and wifi port4 to run at x1 1.0 instead of x1 2.0 as discussed to see a minor power saving.

* enable AHCI Link Power management for SSD/HDD with HIPM+DIPM set.

* disable the USB port that hosts the WWAN device while on DC and not in use. Can be automated as a batch file by using MS' devcon utility.

* disable the Intel(R) Display Audio. It sucks about 0.3W and isn't generally used.

* set LCD brightness to be min+3 increments for DC mode in the power profile

* set CPU max to be 99% in power profile for DC mode in the power profile. That disables the power hungry turbo boost. Consider extending this further with reg hacks to enable "Processor Performance Core Parking Min Cores" (0cc5b647-c1df-4637-891a-dec35c318583), "Processor Performance Core Parking Core Override" (a55612aa-f624-42c6-a443-7397d064c04f) and "Processor Performance Core Parking Parked Performance State" (447235c7-6a8d-4cc0-8e24-9eaf70b96e2b) as described

* set iGPU for max battery in Intel control panel and power profile

* set wifi for max battery in power profile

* set 'Time to Power Saving' to 5s in the SRS (Sound) system tray icon.

* install Flashblock browser add on so blocks out power sucking flash content

* Use a ramdisk for the browser cache as discussed to reduce power-sucking SSD/HDD reads

* If have a SSD use SSDtweaker to disable the pagefile, hiberation amongst other tweaks

* A further 0.3W saving can be had by using Throttlestop to decrease lowest max multiplier from x12 (1.2Ghz) to x8 (800Mhz) for the CPU and disable USB 3.0 as discussed at http://forum.techinferno.com/hp-business-class-notebooks/2537-12-5-hp-elitebook-2570p-owners-lounge-43.html#post79848 . Can insert the code below into the 2570P-PM.bat further down in this post to do this using Setup 1.x pre-boot software instead:

echo Disabling 2570P's USB 3.0 . . .
pt MEM write 1 0xFED1F41B 0x1F

* replace a HDD with a power efficient SSD like a Samsung 840 Pro. HP rate their SSD models as providing 15% better battery life than HDD ones. Implemented by Tech Inferno Fan here using a Dell Samsung SM841, a rebadged Samsung 840 Pro.

* apply cooling system mods to decrease fan engagement

With the all above implemented except the last three I track to precisely 6hrs of battery life as measured with batterybar during wifi websurfing from a 62Whr 6-cell. Lowest idle power consumption seen at 90% battery life point being 5.4W. That's with a 500GB 7.2k HDD installed. I'd get 0.8W less with one of the efficient SSDs shown here.

INFO: 33% longer 2570P battery life by enabling ASPMs and L0s L1

I was disappointed with the 2570P out-of-the-box battery life compared to my previous 2560P. An optimized 2560P can idle at < 5W as shown with a SSD. After all optimizations the best my 2570P can do is 8W idle giving a pathetic 4.5hrs of web surfing battery life.

This falls far short of HP's claim in their 2570P Quickspecs that they get average 8.02W power consumption with Windows 7/64 and up to 9 hours and 15 minutes of total battery life with a 6-cell. The relevant snippet is shown in the spoiler. With my 62Wh 6-cell, my 2570P would need to idle at 6.7W to meet that spec. However, the lowest I've been able to get it to idle with the stock bios is at 8W which would give 7 hours and 45 mins of total battery life if sitting idle, doing nothing.

Spoiler

2570pbattqspecs.png

So what was the problem? Upon investigation I found the ASPMs and L0s/L1 power saving features weren't enabled. The first can be identified by running powercfg -energy in Win7/8 then reviewing the output HTML file. There will be an entry showing this problem:

Platform Power Management Capabilities:PCI Express Active-State Power Management (ASPM) Disabled

PCI Express Active-State Power Management (ASPM) has been disabled due to a known incompatibility
with the hardware in this computer

Doing the fix below corrects this issue. The result being idle power consumption was less than 6W. It even dipped as low as 5.4W. That's the level I observed with a similarly configured Ivy Bridge Dell E6230 I had previously battery optimized.

The fix saw my historic battery life increase from 4.5hrs to 6hrs using a 62Whr 6-cell. An impressive 33% increase in battery life. Not bad :) An initial con was the SD/MMC controller disappears off the pci-e bus (and in Device Manager) about 5mins after switching from AC->DC. However, inserting a SD card into the reader sees it reappear. The same behavior occurring if this tweak is applied or not. Thanks phillofoc for picking that one up.

The fix: enable ASPMs in the ACPI FACP and set L0s L1s in the pci-e configuration

  1. Obtain DIY eGPU Setup 1.x software and install it as a disk image. This will require a MBR type Windows install. Check this by reviewing Device Manager->Disk Drivers->[select]->Volumes->populate. Check the Partition Style setting says Master Boot Record (MBR) rather than GPT (EFI). The Setup 1.x disk image will be accessible as the drive V: in Windows after installation.

  2. Create a v:\config\2570P-PM.bat file containing
    @echo off

    echo Enabling 2570P ASPMs L0s L1 power savings ...
    echo PROs: Reduced power consumption from ~8W to 6W at idle
    echo CONs: none

  3. Set the contents of v:\config\startup.bat to be
    call 2570P-PM
    call chainload mbr

  4. Boot the system via DIY eGPU Setup 1.x. At the Windows bootmenu select "DIY eGPU Setup 1.x". At the DIY eGPU Setup 1.x menu, select "automated startup via startup.bat". That will take you back to the Windows bootmenu but in this second iteration it has the altered pci-e/FACP configuration. So then select Windows there to boot your OS.

    It's possible to eliminate this looping and boot into Setup 1.x directly where it does the ASPMs fixups and then chainload to Win7/8. That gives a fully Win7/8 boot requiring no user intervention. Do that by:

    i. Boot into Setup 1.x and change Chainloader->mbr to be either Chainloader->bootmgr or Chainloader->mbr2

    ii. Remove the Setup 1.x bootitem from bootmgr bootmenu with c:eGPUuninstall-disk-image iii. Download BootICE v1.30 or newer iv. Configure the options as shown here

    Reboot and you'll see that Setup 1.x will now always be the default boot option. As you disk image is still configured to use 'chainload bootmgr' (or chainload mbr2 in most recent builds) wit no additional Win7/8 bootmenu items, when you boot into Setup 1.x and selected "automated startup via startup.bat" it will boot straight into Win7/8.

    Emergency Recovery or restoring original MBR: if you want to restore the original Win7/8 MBR then can either do it in BootICE (set HDD Windows NT 6 MBR) or boot a Win7/8 CD/USB stick and run 'bootsect /nt60 SYS /mbr' .

  5. Disable ASPMs per device if there is a problem enabling it system wide

    As described at Active State Power Management in Windows Vista

    Disabling ASPM The driver developer must place the following entry in the device driver’s INF file:
    [DDInstall.HW]
    Include=machine.inf
    Needs=PciASPMOptOut

    Enabling ASPM on Pre-1.1 Devices The driver developer must place the following entry in the device driver’s INF file:
    [DDInstall.HW]
    Include=machine.inf
    Needs=PciASPMOptIn

  6. Log a case with HP to fix this in their bios. That would eliminate all the steps above. Likely ALL their Ivy Bridge Elitebooks and Probooks are affected. You could otherwise seek a refund based on misleading advertising in their 2570P Quickspecs. With their unoptimized stock bios there is no way this system can achieve the battery life and power consumption levels they've given in their Quickspecs.

I bought this laptop a few month's back on Nando's recommendation and it's been great. A little sad about the WWAN whitelist but I'll live. I just upgraded to the F.40 bios and my memory WEI went from 7.5 to 7.6. HP did list "Optimized memory settings to improve reliability of the memory system" as an improvement. Now to get Setup 1.x and reduce my battery power consumption...

Nando, if you're keeping an eye on this, would you recommend a GTX 660 Ti as an eGPU for this laptop? I plan on using the internal screen only. Thanks!

Yes. GTX660Ti is what I'm using and it's definitely worth the small price premium over a GTX660 for considerably better performance. Not sure why NVidia has 660 in both their names. a GTX660Ti has far more in common with a GTX670. If cash strapped then a s/h GTX560Ti gives great bang-per-buck while still also only needing a modest PSU (12/18W). You could run either from a modded 203W xbox360 PSU if need a more portable eGPU solution.

Yes, wish HP would fix the ASPMs L0/L1 battery life issue in the bios rather than needing Setup 1.x. I can't see how else it would be possible for a 2570P to meet the battery life claims in the HP 2570P Quickspecs.

Thanks for the heads up on F.40. I'll need to give it a try.

I might be able to do something about the whitelist if you're interested.

Am interested, but be aware HP have RSA encrypted their last three gens of bios (2540P, 2560P, 2570P). Unless you have a solution around that any mods are going to potentially brick the system or at the very least prevent bootup.

Has anyone on this forum installed an internal blu-ray writter on the HP 2570p?

do you have a part number for a good one that will fit in dvd bay?

thanks

2570P uses a standard 9.5mm tall SATA optical drive. Just transplant the faceplate to get a perfect look from your new BD-ROM drive. Here's an example of one that will fit: US$74-shipped 9.5mm Blu-ray DVDRW Combo UJ152 BD ROM Drive UJ-152

Hi, I am new on this forum. I've just bought 2570p. Has anyone managed to overclock the CPU or GPU with tool provided in the first post? And I have 4GB of 1600 MHz RAM and one free slot. Do you recommend to buy a second one in order to create a Dual Channel connection?

I haven't played around with unlocking the bios to allow BCLK and/or multiplier unlock overclock of a CPU. Owners of a 2570P can luckily swap out the CPU for a higher performance one. A i7-3720QM being a good quad-core candidate if wanting to experiment with unlocking the bios to allow access to it's extra 4 multipliers above it's 3.6Ghz turbo speed (up to 4.0Ghz).

Yes, do recommend purchasing a second 4GB 1600Mhz RAM module to get a dual-channel memory configuration. Your HD4000 iGPU performance will noticably improve.

2570P doesn't support mSATA. Hacking in support is quite a challenge

I looked at the mSATA slot and noticed there are tracks that lead to the SATA pins (23, 25, 31, 33) but they aren't attached. Bridging those tracks would give an electrical link. Though that's not the end of the problem. The greater issue is getting a BIOS that has enabled the SATA controller that attaches to those electrical lines AND can make use of it. AFAIK only the 8470W/8570W has a mSATA friendly bios but doesn't provide boot support. Rather, mSATA on those systems acts as cache to an auxilery HDD.

If anybody wants to try to bridge the electrical links and then flash the 8470W/8570W, would need to boot using ALT+[left arrow]+[right arrow] (to disable the flash descriptor) grab a dump of the 8470W/8570W bios using the ME 8.x firmware utilities' fptw64.exe and then do the same on the 2570P using the same fptw64.exe. The easier route to pursue if adding a SSD to a HDD-equipped system is to swap in a optical caddy to host a 2.5" 9.5mm drive in place of the optical drive. REF: http://forum.techinferno.com/desktop-storage/2108-diy-adding-ssd-hdd-storage-using-optical-bay-caddy-%5Bver-2-0%5D.html#post27092

If you're still looking for ram, I bought these a while back:

ADATA XPG Gaming Series Model AXDS1600GC4G9-2 Laptop Memory - Newegg.com

I got it because it's low voltage and low latency memory; I dropped my old 4gb stick into another machine. WEI is currently at 7.6 for memory and 6.5 for both graphics. I know it's not the best way to compare systems, but it's quick and everyone can do it.

I would caution against overclocking the CPU or GPU, go with Nando's recommendation of a quad core or eGPU. While running KSP I have seen temps in the high 90's. I put arctic silver on the CPU which dropped max temps by about 5 degrees. Not sure what CPU you have now, but I have a i5-3360 and it's plenty fast

If you go with the quad core, please report back how well it works for you!

Thank you both. I bought this RAM and ot works very well. I've got 8 gb in two sticks. Performance boost for the iGPU is really huge and on some games can easily exceed 30%, like in Dead Space, where I see the biggest boost of about 50%!

My CPU is 3210m. First, I'm planning to build eGPU, then I'll think about i7 QM (maybe 35W version is a way to go).

Is anyone else having bluetooth reception issues? If I move my hand to use the trackpad, my BT headset will cut out. This happens with two different headsets, and they worked fine with my old Acer laptop. I'm thinking that it might be due to the metal case but not sure. Thanks!

Edit: I went to the HP driver page for the laptop and selected the bluetooth link. If you click on revision history, there's two newer versions of the BT software, October 2012 and April 2013. I'm running the October version and it has improved the function of the bluetooth module greatly!

Hi all,

I have the opportunity to obtain an 2570p and have already gained some helpful information from the Owner's Lounge.

The system will have an i5 CPU, type not known yet. My main concern is whether it will be possible to upgrade gaming capability to play games that rely more on GPU. I see two options that I would both like to implement:

* use two ram modules for dual channel

* mount i5 Haswell CPU as soon as they're out

What do you think, will swaping the CPU even be an option or would all that just be putting lipstick on a pig?

Ivy Bridge chipset is not compatible with Haswell, therefore CPU upgrade to Haswell won't work.

Thanks for the fast reply! That drastically limits the possibilities with this system.

Not so quick. A 2570P can accomodate a 45W i7-quad Ivy Bridge CPU and can have an eGPU like a GTX660Ti attached via the expresscard slot. With it's RAID-0 capability, the combo makes it the most powerful system available for a relatively low outlay if purchased on ebay ('as new', or smart-buy 1yr warranty variant).

Furthermore, I've had a chance to test Haswell i7-quad CPUs finding they run hot with little performance benefit over comparable Ivy Bridge i7-quad CPUs. See http://forum.techinferno.com/throttlestop-realtemp-discussion/6958-haswell-step-backwards-ivy-bridge-i-have-some-shocking-tdp-results.html .

Hi All,

I recently purchased a 2570p and absolutely love the little beast. Build quality, upgradeability and performance are very impressive!

A couple of questions:

1) Has anyone tried upgrading their machines to a 45W quad? Asking because I doubt the cooling system would let it run @ max load for more than a few min before overheating. My 3360M gets to 87C in Prime95 after about 10min (repasted with a mediocre quality paste) @ room 25C. We need to do some serious cooling overhaul to be able to bump the wattage by 25-30%.

2) Any good news on screen upgrades? I know the IPS from lenovo can work but it doesn't seem to fit the lid properly. Maybe it's still possible to mod the lid somehow? Also, anyone tried that 1080p panel from XPS 12 convertible? Seems like a nice option if it works.

Hi Aikimox, I can answer both of your questions :) I've tried to upgrade the CPU and LCD screen with an user bjorm. And we wrote a topic on our Polish forum nhl.pl. Here is the link: http://www.nhl.pl/index.php?showtopic=67159&st=0&start=0, and here bjorm tried a more complicated way of upgrading the screen in 2560p: http://www.nhl.pl/index.php?showtopic=67439&pid=680789&st=0entry680789. In short:

1) switching CPU to Sandy Bridge i7-2630qm gave us some nice performance gain, and the temps were not bad. Totally idle after booting up the system were smaller than 40 degrees. Maximum temp was 85 after the 3dmark06 test, which is very CPU-demanding. In Crysis 3, combined with eGPU gtx660 OC, CPU never reached 80 degrees. Of course, using iGPU only in 3dm11 or some Prime95 benchmarks may get the CPU to higher values, maybe over 95 degrees.

BUT switching to Sandy CPU f*cked up my motherboard! I don't know, maybe it was faulty.I needed to use my awesome warranty. I think that using i7 Ivy CPU should cause no problems. So, I rather don't recommend Sandy CPU for 2570p.

2) We failed to switch LCD to x220 IPS. It has got the incompatible wiring and screws placed somewhere else. You may find a way to make it more compatible, but we failed for sure.

@jot23,

Wow, 85C in 3DMark06 is quite ok! I might give it a shot then. Worst case, will do a cooling overhaul. You can slap 3-6mm of copper on the heatsink and if needed, land another fan instead of the DVDrom (but I'd rather have a second HDD there).

Also need to get my hands on a x220 IPS.....

Welcome aboard. If I'm not mistaken you may have owned some earlier 25x0P systems. I've now had a 2510P, 2530P, 2560P and 2570P. Awesome unrepresented boxes.

I see to you are looking to performance enhance this system. Consider these upgrades:

* 45W i7-quad: user SimoxTav on another forum did a i7-quad upgrade on a 2560P and kept temps < 90 degrees. Key was using a better TIM. There have been 2570P units on ebay-US selling with low end 45W i7-3610QM CPUs. No one has yet confirmed a 45W i7-quad upgrade in this thread.

* RAID-0: yes, our bios allows RAID-0 between the primary HDD and a second one in ODD caddy. Meaning 2x256GB SATA-III SSDs would get > 1GB/s sequential reads. A 2560P has had this feature locked out.

* backlit keyboard. See what comes of Bjorm's attempt of a 2170P backlit keyboard transplant at http://forum.techinferno.com/hp-business-class-notebooks/2090-hp-elitebook-2560p-owners-lounge-%5Bversion-2-0%5D.html#post52708.

* IPS or FHD LCD: IPS like found in a X230 has so far failed to fit within the 2560P LCD cover. See bjorm's attempt at http://forum.techinferno.com/hp-business-class-notebooks/2090-hp-elitebook-2560p-owners-lounge-%5Bversion-2-0%5D.html#post52782 . No reports of fitting FHD 12.5" from a Dell XPS 12.

* mSATA SSD - the WWAN slot hastracks off them (pin 23,25,31,33) but the final build didn't bridge the little tracks. Soldering 0ohm SMT resistors would do the trick with 5mins of effort. So the port could be electrically connected then but is it to a Southbridge pci-e port or mSATA. If it's mSATA then is the BIOS doesn't enable that SATA port. Would it enable it if it detected a mSATA SSD in there? Or would it need something like a 8470P/W BIOS flashed to the 2570P OR hacking the flash descriptor to enable that port.

It's possible to get a bios dump from those systems using the fptw64 tool and then flash it on a 2570P using the same tool. Would be handy to have a SPI flash programmer handy in case it the process goes pear shaped. REF: http://forum.techinferno.com/general-notebook-discussions/2091-lets-enable-overclocking-all-6-7-series-laptops-5.html for fptw64 as part of ME 8.x utilities.

SIV64 reports the following in 2570P system config as shown in the attachment:

port0 = primary HDD bay

port1 = upgrade bay

port2 = mSATA

port3 = Docking Station eSATA

port4 = eSATA

port5 = Docking Station upgrade bay

However, the only ports that are enabled are: port0, port1, port4 and port5.
