gecko
Hello,I have a MSI-GX740, for now until i find a solution (because the AHCI mode doesn't detect the drive) the start mode of my OCZ vertex 4 is set to IDEShould i deal with it?why am i feeling frustrated by the fact that the drive is set to IDE mode?I heard that AHCI mode has some nice features and better perfs and then i've heard that it was the other way aroundWhat do you guys think?Thank for your time
Mackan
AHCI is the more modern mode, and is a must if you want to get the best performance out of your SSD. There are many benchmark tests out there that compares the two modes.
Moderator BAKED Posted December 23, 2012 Moderator Share Posted December 23, 2012 AHCI is prefered if supported, you'll have to enable ahci in windows and then in BIOS.
Founder Brian Posted December 23, 2012 Founder Share Posted December 23, 2012 You lose command queuing, hot swapping, performance and a few other features, take a look here for performance differences: SSD Benchmark Tests: SATA IDE vs AHCI Mode | AHCI vs IDE,SSD,AHCI,IDE,SATA,Solid State Drive,Benchmark Performance SSD Testing AHCI vs IDE,Benchmark Performance SSD Testing: Intel ICH10 SATA AHCI vs IDE Mode Speed and IOPS Comparison So yeah try to get AHCI working. anomeloris
AHCI doesn't affect speed all that much
Darken_Shadow
AHCI supports TRIM. I tend to suggest to most people running mechanical drives and do not hot-swap to stick with IDE. No real difference in speed. So use which ever you want so long as it detects the drive properly.
Guest
IDE legacy mode is only good if you want to update you firmware and the utility or in dos,etc doesn't detect your driveJust wait for an update with hopefully cure the compatibility issues
hanberges
Have you tried to update your OCZ Vertex 4 firmware to the last version, and you MSI laptop bios also? I had this issue once (non AHCI) support with a Samsung 830 on an ASUS MB, and I had to upgrade both firmware to make it work.
Spartus
I seem to remember some effect on health monitoring as well. I could be incorrect however.
