Information about BIOS updates A07/A08 and higher for M14xR2, M17xR4 & M18xR2

I found a new way to flash the bios, it worked for my Asus Ultrabook, it might work as well for the AW line. If done properly it's as safe as a normal bios update, unlike the recovery procedure. If you're interested let me know, it would require you to dump some files for me so that I can check whether it should work.
@svl7 - did this new way work for the M18x R2 and M17x R4? I may have an M18x R2 mobo on the way soon and want to know if there is a reliable way I can flash an unlocked BIOS with the new RST OROM if it comes from Alienware with A08 firmware. (I am hoping it has an older version, but that's not how my luck usually runs, LOL.)

Nope, but I have another idea... though no idea whether it will work. But it's easy to test, and at least the test is harmless.

OK, well, if the mobo purchase works out like I hope it will, I will give you a shout by G-Talk or PM and we will test your theory. :)

Sure, cool! I even have another idea, but that's rather unlikely to work I think... though I haven't really researched it thoroughly so far since I can't test it anyways.

This was posted in another thread, but I think it might be equally relevant here.

There's A08 in the first post... but you I recommend A03 since else it will be difficult to switch back to anything else (which is modified). Read the links in the first post for the reasons.
I recommend that, too. Here's a nice example of how special UEFI, secure boot and all of this new hardware/firmware based signature and certificate "security" feces really is...

XPS8500 Reinstalling Windows8 pro on unformatted new hdd from Dell - Windows 8 - Software & Operating Systems - Dell Community

No need to worry about such idiocy with A03.

Hello everyone

I've just registered to this forum.

My bad english wont stop me from chasing for performance.

So I got me a AW M17x R4.

svl7: It already has A10 official BIOS. Is it possible I can take part in your "modified BIOS project"?

Greetings

I think so, even though another user here who had A10 factory installed reported some issues... You can give it a try anyway, you need to downgrade to stock A05 by using the USB recovery method and then you can flash the modified version using the provided tools. If it doesn't work, let me know.

svl7: Thank you, I'll give it a try. Could you please provide me with the information as what kind of issues should I expect? I've been searching for this information throughout the forum, but couldn't find none.

My first post here and i am having one hell of a time with my Mxr17 and i am thinking a modified bios would do the trick if it would let me turn off Switchable graphics. i have the A09 bios.

Is there is any other way to turn off switchable graphics? if not i guess its the "downgrade to stock A05 by using the USB recovery method and then you can flash the modified version using the provided tools" method... But i am scared reading stories about bricking laptops

Does unlocking the bios allow the ability to password protect the boot selection menu? or disable the ability to use usb or cd from the boot select menu? Thanks!

My M14x R2 is only a week old and now has official A12 bios. It did come with A11 and I updated it as a matter of course when reformatting the HDD and installing Win 8.

I've been trying to overclock all day usinf MSI Afterburner and can only get the Memory Clock to increase, the Core Clock is locked.

I found this forum via Google and realised that the vBios is locked and I need a modded Bios.

Am I stuffed now? Do I need to wait for a modded A12?

Can I downgrade to A04 (the only official Bios I can find below A08)? If so, how?

Sorry for the noob questions but it is my first day at Alienware overclocking.

Thanks

I honestly like windows 8 not to mention the BIOS updates fix problems and improve performance (I forget) but one such update actually decreased POST time significantly.

Has anyone managed to successfully downgrade an Alienware M18r2 A12 to an unlocked bios? IF so, please share on how this is done. Thanks.

I have installed A12. Haven't noticed anything while on windows 8.1. I have downgraded using dell's utility to A11. Now I will go to A10 and later flash A10 unlocked. I want to push my 3720 a bit.

As somebody who doesn't understand the bios completely, features such as hyper threading, over clocking, and turbo boosts are accessed here right? I was under the impression that software was needed to adjust things like turbo boost and over clocking.

I'm quite curious if there is any point in upgrading to the newest bios for the CPU fixes. I was told by a friend that it's worth it for the security, but I'm wondering if it would effect business' more than individuals?

While it's perfectly true that not everyone is able to hear such high pitch noises, and I SO wish I was one of them, true also that for those who hear them, not only it is a pain in our... head, but worse, it can actually lead ot headaches, which I was getting sometimes before I found how to get rid of the transistor on noise.

sorry double ppst

      Bios Release Version – v2.0.0

      Updated or Modded Items:
A11 UNLOCKED BIOS FOR m18Xr2 (UNLOCKED BY SVL7 AND FULL CREDIT GOES TO HIM FOR UNLOCKING!)
SVL7 Also created the PRR2.EXE tool that allows you to flash the new bios by unlocking it.  (FULL CREDIT GOES TO HIM FOR THAT FILE PRR2.EXE)

Here are ALL the things I've added, modded, and enhanced on this bios -
I've added FULL LEGACY SUPPORT ON THIS BIOS with ONE or TWO CARDS (SLI).  You can FINALLY use Win 7 OS on your machine and run the 900 series GPU's!
      This is a MAJOR breakthrough!

LEGACY SUPPORT Confirmed.  Works with 900 series GPu's in single OR SLI formation Updated the Intel RST Legacy to v12.9.0.2006 (Supports TRIM in RAID0 - CONFIRMED) Updated Intel RST UEFI to v12.9.0.2006 (Supports TRIM in RAID0 - CONFIRMED) Updated the ONBOARD Video Card for the HD3xxx to v2171 - FROM v2132 Updated ONBOARD Video Card for the HD4xxx to v2171 - FROM v2132 Updated the LAN Firmware & PXE Boot from 2.0.5.9 to v2.0.6.6 ADDED NvMe Support for m18xr2 ADDED M.2 support for m18xr2 Updated CPU Microcode to v29 for the 2900 CPU's Updated CPU Microcode to v1c for the 3900 CPU's Updated GOP Driver for Intel Sandy Bridge CPU Updated GOP Driver for Intel Ivy Bridge CPU Updated MAIN GOP Policy module for the m18xR2 Eliminated some code that wasn't used in the m18xR2 Updated CSM Module (v2) Streamline some coding to make mod(s) run a little more efficiently (v2) Added FPARTS.TXT to rar file in v2. (I had forgot to add it in v1) v2.5 to be released shortly.  I've updated a few more modules that I didn't realize could be updated.  (It's only 3 modules, but it's still an update!)   It should be released in about a week.  Hope this helps ya'll!
      Instructions to flash:
Use a flash drive to create a boot disk into dos Unzip ALL files into the root of the flash drive (flash.bat, r2final.bin, fpt.exe, flash.bat, prr2.exe, fparts.txt,m18r2.hdr, m18r2.hdr.bin, readmefirst.txt) BOOT INTO DOS – Note, that when you set the bios to legacy in order to boot into dos, you MAY have to reinstall OS!  (Just be prepared to reinstall no matter what) Once you boot into dos, run the file flash.bat It will unlock your bios (THANKS TO SVL7’s BIOS UNLOCKING TOOL – ALL CREDIT TO HIM FOR THIS TOOL!) Let it flash… Reboot your pc, and enjoy the MASSIVE updates!
Be on the lookout as I do plan to release newer version with more updates in the future.  However, it wont be for at least a few weeks as I'm now working on legacy support for the m17xR4 and several other systems.  So please be patient!

      ENJOY!

I was wondering is there a way to boot into UEFI or EFI with stock bios, and or does the modded Bios allow for Windows 10 to install under UEFI /EFI conditions?

I've installed W10 a few times, and don't seem to be able to get the R1 board to boot via USB, so I'm hoping for a way to install via BD with drivers on a USB thumb-drive for raid and such... I figure this is the best way to do this, but how does UEFI play into the mix? Are there any ways to get UEFI going without it hindering the performance of the computer?

      Thanks~

Hello. I'm currently running windows 10 on bios version 1.00 and want to upgrade to 1.03 but cannot boot Ms dos flash in uefi. There is no option to enable Legacy mode and the option to disable uefi in bios is greed out. When I try booting from flash in bios, it shows black screen and returns back to bios screen. My rig is a p157sm. Any help will be appreciated as I'm looking to install prema bios mod.

I need to be able to access the chipset, south bridge, and other advanced settings in my bios.
The stock bios locks out almost everything other than boot order.

I think the BIOS is Aptio V and I've got this dump with fptw64: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B4ozRmHOIQm-RFRYV2hlTjl6eHM/view?usp=sharing

Never needed to do this just to access some settings before so don't really know what I'm doing.

      Hi guys.

As with the title, is there any way to get a m17x r3 to use UEFI or is this just a pipe dream? I read over the internet that this requires Dell company itself to refactor the BIOS and release it to the public. Well if that's the case many believe it would be easier to land a man on Mars then to get Dell's help on this issue. Does the hardware itself plays a roll in updating to UEFI ? Well if the motherboard itself doesn't support UEFI and its more of a hardware limitation rather than a software, please let me know and I'll let this dream go, once and for all. Well if not, does anyone else knows of any other way to get a m17x r3 to UEFI-capable ? Imagine fast-booting into win10 and more importantly, a chance to get a 980M working in a m17x r3. (from my understanding 880M is as far as the m17x r3 can go as the 980M requires UEFI-capabilities)

I know my laptop is approaching 7 years old and by now most m17xr3 are phrased out but i still believe there are some owners out there still kicking about with their madly modded-out r3s (like me).

      Thanks for the read
