P150HM and GTX680M : yes we can

I use the 180W adapter ... I never have problem @854/2400 cause the only way to go higher than 180W is to launch furmark (or msi kombustor) and prime 95.

In that test HTWingNut's Sager NP9150 (Clevo P150EM) Review with LOTS of 680m benchmarks!

You can see peak consumption and peak temp on a P150em with GTX680@ stock - @854/2280 @1000/2400

bd00ea98-06f3-4d1e-8d2d-b633b0866f23.jpg

Btw maybe we are not egal with the OC of GTX680m memory, chip memory are samsung certified at 900MhzX2 with 1.35V and 1250MhzX2 with 1.5V: so there is no risk with the OC of the memory ... but keep in mind that on our card the voltage of the memory is 1.35v ... maybe your memory can't run stable @2400Mhz ... try reduce the clock of your memory.

Your problem don't seem to be power related because when you go too much higher and PSU cannot support so high wattage ... the laptop shutdown in order to not damage PSU, power circuitry...

The laptop could shutdown too if it overheat.

But your problem seem to be only stability issue.

I have flash my clevo GTX580M in the past with a dell bios and it keep working ... but flashing could be tricky

Hope that:

1 it won't brick your card (but i think that if widezu69 done a flash in the other side it could be safe?)

2 Will make optimus working again on your laptop

Some news about my issue with saltius vbios (Remember: the card keep his idle clock of 324 mhz when launching 3d games or benchmark.)

It was my fault, I tried change thermal pad with some supposed more efficient (like i did with my GTX580M), at stock or 853 mhz clock there was no problem but when i tried saltius vbios, the GPU has kept his idle clock of 324Mhz in 3d application (I think that i have done something wrong with thermal pad) after replacement with original thermal pad, the card work like a charm with saltius vbios.

Edit 08/04 : Saltius bios and all Msi based bioses are unstable on my card.

wow how did you manage such high scores with a 580M? it takes insane overclocks and overvolts to get that kind of score on the modded vBIOS 680Ms

They are here ... the useful pieces that i need in order to improve the cooling system of my laptop

43e0a91c-80fd-471c-9748-f8dc687606f2.jpg

The following tests were realised with an ambiant temperature of 24°c, driver: nvidia 306.23, monitoring and OC software: afterburner 2.2.5.

Software for the review: 3dm11 and Crysis2 ultra (same sequence played 2 times during 1 hour) card OC at 1005Mhz core/2400Mhz memory.

All tests were performed with a Zalman3000 notebookcooler, I thank Pau1ow to sold me a P150HM backplate already modded. I made some additional changes : with the traditional aluminum tape which done the junction between the fan and heatsink, I glued several layers of aluminum tape on the backplate (inside face) to achieve a thickness which comes into contact with the heatsink, it can enlarge the dissipation surface of the heatsink, then I paste 4 ram copper heatsink covering on the gpu and 3 on cpu. The tests are:

1 with the original backplate (unmodded)+ ram heatsink copper + notebookcooler

2 with the modded backplate+ ram heatsink copper + notebookcooler

(add 2-3 degrees more if you want to have the température reached without notebookcooler)

I will post later some pictures of the mod

Result: Ouch, a peak at 90 degree, i admit that i observe only a max of 89°C during the play

Crysis 2 Ultra 1 hour of play GTX680@1005/2400 modded backplate

8400f790-9a03-4532-b5e6-281098dc0549.jpg

Result: a peak of 82°C so a 8 degrees drop

coming : pictures of the modded backplate

a 2min vidéo of crysis2 gameplay after 45 minutes the temperature reach only 79°C

Conclusion: The added copper ram heatsink not bring me any temperature drop with the original plate even with notebookcooler (though I noticed a slower rise in temperature), the biggest drop was made with the combo modded backplate + notebookcooler + copper ram heatsink because it helps bringing some fresh air directly on the components (drop between 5 and 8 ° C).

Here are the video (sorry for the quality, first time i made a capture, you can had 3 fps more due to the load of the capture)

Before central park

Central Park opening

Note:

My ram cooper are too thin to be in contact with the backplate, only aluminium tape in in contact. I don't play with my laptop on my lap, or with a notebookcooler. Without notebookcooler i can make browsing session or watching video with the laptop on my lap without problem, the backplate is a little warm but temperature is far enough the threshold to cause injury or be uncomfort.

@Brian and other: Don't forget that the 8°C drop is with a notebookcooler. The fan sound is, unfortunately the same. The fan isn't at max speed even at 90°C. The fan speed was tuned for a 580m and this card generate more heat (i have some peak at 92°C with this card (gtx580m)) so the max speed of the fan is active only with temperature superior to 92°C. But with the mod , temperature increase more slowly so the fan is less active. i will complete the review later with a temperature measure without the notebook cooler.

@pau1ow: Yes, you and i, we will dominate the world ! muahahahaha (evil laugh) ;) ...

Hum ... seriously, thank you again for the backplate, You miss a lot on P4G forum. Some users ask me: " where can they buy a backplate ?" ... do you think that you could have more PXXX backplate ? Or maybe, i am the only lucky guy that had the possibility to buy you a backplate.

EDIT 07/11: I made some test without notebook cooler : @1005/2400 after 35 min of play, the card reach a température of 93°C and it's not a peak, the temperature remain at this threshold, then the card began to throttle to try to prevent overheat and finally the laptop shudown for thermal security reason. So, the threshold of thermal security of the GTX680M is much lower than GTX580M that could reach 96°C without problem (in furmark) and run @92°C during hours.

I recommand not to go higher than 915/2250 without notebook cooler. @915/2250 i saw a peak of 90°C (just few seconds) and the temperature stabilize at 88°C/89°C after 1h of play, Then i put the fan manually in turbo mode (FN+1) and the temperature drop to a 83°C (again without notebook cooler). I will remake the test @1005/2400 with fan in turbo mode this evening. So playing without notebook cooler isn't recommanded with these extreme clock on P150HM or with turbo fan on (but i ask me what is the lifespan of the fan if this function is used too often).

PS: i have edited the post where i done the test @1005/2400 because i had forgotten to specify the use of a notebook cooler.

the inf tweak will not work because the cards are not supportet Official in German or Europe.the bios is locked for cards after the 6970 / 680 GTX

thx Alex

what is the version of your bios? Latest for HM series are 1.01.14 for the main bios and EC 13 for the bios that regulate the fan speed. P150HM will never detect the GTX680M or 7970m IN BIOS Menu.

If you install a gtx680m, inf tweak will work (guide here to do yourself

) but you need a clevo GTX680M with vbios 80.04.29.00.01 or you need to downgrade to that vbios.

For a Clevo P150EM, you must use the same vbios as P150HM, you can use this one http://forum.techinferno.com/general-notebook-discussions/2062-using-your-4gb-gtx-680m-its-safest-full-potential.html

and all vbios based on MSI_FD and 80.04.29.00.01 Clevo.

The VBIOS based on 80.04.33.00.10 seem to cause some p.o.s.t errors, in P150hm, i can flash back to the backup vbios, but on P150EM the laptop refuse to boot to the operating system and the card need to be flashed on an other laptop to be repaired.

You can see the adventure of APU71 with the vbios 80.04.33.00.10 on his P150EM

http://forum.techinferno.com/general-notebook-discussions/1847-nvidia-kepler-vbios-mods-overclocking-editions-modified-clocks-voltage-tweaks-65.html

He got the chance to know a guy with a P150HM wich help him to flash back the gtx.

Like i said only vbios based on MSI_FD or 80.04.29.00.01 Clevo are fully supported by P1XXHM/EM. Dell vbios aren't compatible either.

It's normal temp with furmark at this clock, i recommand the vbios in the link i provide since this vbios http://forum.techinferno.com/general-notebook-discussions/1847-nvidia-kepler-vbios-mods-overclocking-editions-modified-clocks-voltage-tweaks-65.html has a load voltage of 1v and the MSI_fd has a load voltage of 1.27v

Don't use Furmark because it will make your card to throttle.

Test the reliability of your card with 3dmark11, heaven benchmark and different heavy games like BF3, Crysis2 ...

Use a notebookcooler to cool your laptop (average gain of 3°C without modding the backplate)

Stock bios has a load voltage of 0.962V ... I reach 1005Mhz with 1v, so i think that you can easily reach 900 Mhz with 1v, but it depend of your card (Overclocking is not a science ;-)

"How can i edit the bios for set my personnal frequency ?" Maybe you can ask SVL7 ...
