Andreas1381
Hi. My previous 670m card died, burned out when connected to the pci port. So ordered 980m card. Adjusted heatsink, have the correct bios and firmware for the 980m card but my problem is as follows. The laptop works fine when no GPU is connected to the pci port. But when i connect the 980m the pc wont turn on at all with/without battery. Tried ac reset, bios reset etc. Also my charger is blinking when i connect it with GPU connected to board. Anyone have a clue what is wrong here, PCI port dead? Worst case scenario I wonder if im able to use an egpu adapter connected to mini pcie port to use my 980m and if so how much performance loss? Thanks in advance, Regards Andreas.
arsenex
do you get a blink by the power button ? what bios version do you have ? by any chance can you include a screen shot or picture of the laptop without the lid ? (where the gpu is located) and also of the bios does your laptop have esata connector in the back or display port?
Andreas1381
No, no lights no fans spinning or anything. But when disconnecting the gpu my laptop works just fine just with the integrated graphics. Have esata connector but no display port. i add some pictures. the green card is the older one u can see at the bottom right, u can see its burned.https://ibb.co/Cw0Jp7h BIOS version https://ibb.co/4K9h4P1 Laptop without lid https://ibb.co/PCpRLXV Without heatsink to show location gpuhttps://ibb.co/9HYxQgzhttps://ibb.co/sv6gZ58 without gpuhttps://ibb.co/xsSL8Qy Old card
arsenex
you may need to mod the heatsink, if its the same one from the old gpu and clean the thermal grease from the memory chips , only the core chip should have the grease . use this for cooling the memory chips https://www.ebay.com/itm/Blue-GPU-CPU-Heatsink-Cooling-Thermal-Conductive-Silicone-Pad-100mmx100mmx1mm-E/163642681332?_trkparms=aid%3D555018%26algo%3DPL.SIM%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D20131003132420%26meid%3D17daa89786af4c46aa4e660031c6a9ce%26pid%3D100005%26rk%3D3%26rkt%3D12%26sd%3D233248753774%26itm%3D163642681332&_trksid=p2047675.c100005.m1851 and you will need to cover the mosfets as well with thermal pads your bios is fine , if the heatsink makes direct contact to any resistors, mosfets or the voltage regulators it will create a short on the board that may be the reason it wont even turn on ,to protect the motherboard this happen to me on a GX60 i could not get it to boot due to part of the heatsink making direct contact to one of the R22 voltage regulator i marked the picture with the card the red area needs the thermal pads the blue area needs to be clean and dry and needs thermal pads the green area needs to be clean and dry the purple needs to be cleaned there are also probes (the gold dots) that needs to be dry i marked the mosfets with a white line somewhere in that mess is a short that maybe cause the pc not to boot when the card is installed

Andreas1381
Hi again. So i cleaned the GPU to add pads, pretty sure it should be fine now. But i see some interference from the heatsink the card goes slightly up in the back. Do I need to buy a 780 heatsink or similar? https://ibb.co/CwTHDm8 Regards, Andreas. arsenex
you might need to mod it with a power tool (cut or sand off) the extra piece of aluminum that touching the card , i had to go to a metal shop to get it done Edited June 10, 2019 by arsenex
