Just got a 980m for m18xr2. 8 beeps.

Recommended Posts

My 675m showed lines all across the screen but did let me go into bios.  I decided to go ahead and upgrade to a 980m and finally got it in the mail.

I installed the carf and i now get 8 beeps.   So I reset the CMOS and still 8 beeps.      I’m now tearing it back down to put the 675m back in. (I’ll finish after work).   I have bios a12 currently.

What at exactly do I need to do?

Any my help would be greatly appreciated.   Will post on YouTube when and if I can get it to work with your help.

Thanks.

Thanks Klem!  I will download that into a flash drive with the 675m in , go into bios, and update it.   Then I’ll put the 980m back in.  Will do tonight.   Will report my progress.   Thanks!

Well no more 8 beeps and the screen comes on and boots into Windows.    The only problem now is the Alienware doesn’t detect a discrete graphics card in the bios and simply loads the intel 4000 graphics.        Any idea what could be the issue?

If it’s not one thing it’s another klem.  Now after a few seconds of seeing lines in Windows the mouse will freeze and a message about the video card comes up and sometimes the screen goes purple.   When the computer does start you see these lines as well.      Do you think I got a bad card?

Well I did that and I still get the lines in peg mod and then it either locks up or shows me a solid colored screen.      The last card in it was a 675m and it started to show lines as well.     Do you think the motherboard is bad?

Klem... i noticed when i turn off PEG and put it back to the intel graphics the screen looks fine, but when i switch to peg the lines appear and sometimes fluctuate...and the computer normally locks up.  So i guess peg mode using the gtx is giving issues.   The bios does show that the GTX nvidia is installed when i restart in PEG though.   I wonder if it's the card (unlikely since the last card showed the same lines), or the motherboard?

Or could their possibly be a loose cable behind the screen?   But if that were the case wouldn't the integrated intel 4000 graphics also show lines?

Unfortunately i don't know what the problem in your case, motherboard or your 980M. But you can try  to flash Dell's vbios for your 980M, and then check if it solve your problem.

I tried to install the modded driver and this happens.   The screen lines go away and everything looks perfect for a couple of seconds,  then these squares pop up , the computer locks up, and then blue screen, always before the driver installs completely.             Sometimes the computer just locks up with squares and no blue screen.

Does your gtx675m show lines after you installed the correct drivers? If 3 gpu's show lines then it might be something else

I just installed a 765m and it works flawlessly.  No artifacts or lines.   The brand new 980m must be faulty.    I will put it back in one more time but I don’t think the 980m will work.    Here is a picture of the 765m.  No lines, no squares, no artifacts.   Looks great.  Can use the computer too!      So I just need a working 980m now.

I have several questions on upgrading my M18X R2.
My rig's GPU is 680m and video ram is 2GB. It's a relic :p So I will change it to 980m.

      1. Is it working on windows 7? (If it works, legacy or UEFI mode?)
      2. Is 980m /w G-sync compatible with my rig?
      3. Are there any compatibility issues with M18X R2 and Windows 10?

I tried to find useful information far as I can do, but my English ability sucks :S

      Guys, please help me!

      Hello

My M18XR2 was working on Windows 10 with a 880M.
Last week, I reinstalled my system, and I couldn't get nvidia driver working...
I took the last installed modified driver, and even downloaded latest version, modified it again, nothing to do, I have same error : nvidia installation failed.
I only install the graphic driver too, it fail. The screen goes black, then light again, and it fail...
Do someone have an idea how to fix this probleme ?
      Thank you

Hi all. Total noob here. I just traded for a M18xR2 alienware laptop and I tried to boot a bios following
      a guide from http://techinferno.com/haven/threads/4/

I beleive i used the G74VW GTX660M bios Version 1 not knowing if it was the exact match I needed and said
yes like a jackwagon through all of the warnings. My system rebooted to what I believe was a secondary
GPU intel something or another which was not half as fast as the GeForce GTX 660M.

So a bit frusterated I did a little digging and found a guide to do a blind flash at
htt://www.techinferno.com/  under the thread how to recover from a bad flash Alienware M18XR2.
I went to Dells website and downloaded the original A03 bios M18R2A03WIN.exe and added the file to 7zip
and found the file called QBR10EC.fd and renamed it o M18R2.hdr then placed the file on a 2.0 usb stick
formatted fat32 (did not check the DOS box while formatting). I took out the battery put usb into esata
port pressed end then plugged in power released end then she started to beep like the guide said it
would. I counted around 140 beeps then just a black screen and ever onece in a while the fans would rev
up a bit. I let it go all night like that and was still like that in the morning. Now I try to press the
power button and nothing happens... So I am stumped and would love
some advice please before adding another brick in the wall !

      Hey all,

I'm going to be upgrading my m18x r2 from dual radeon hd 7970m's to a single gtx 980m. Ordering an upgrade kit today from here that should arrive in 3 days or so.
I've taken it apart before but all parts are original thus far. I've noticed this is a pretty common topic here on TI but haven't found a straighforward guide. I'm planning to
document the upgrade as I go along to serve as that guide. My plan as it stands right now is this: Flash swick and SVL7's A11 unlocked BIOS, teardown and replace the cards
more or less following this guide, rebuild and check that I didn't screw anything up too terribly, and flash prema's vBIOS. As of now my next step is downloading the latest
nvidia drivers and modifying them for my system following this guide, but if that doesn't work I may just revert to using j95's modded drivers.

      My specs are:
      PC: Alienware m18x r2
      OS: Windows 10 Home
CPU: Ivy Bridge Intel i7 3630QM
      RAM: 12GB Dual Channel DDR3
      HD: 1TB RAID 0
      GPU: 7970m Crossfire (sadly dead)
      BIOS: A11(stock)

For flashing the BIOS and vBIOS you have to create a bootable dos usb. I found a great guide for that here.
