The title says all.

But as a side note of why I want Want this is because. I have my Alienware 17 R3 plugged into a my graphics amp watching some youtube videos. I had long day that i kind passed out in my dxracer chair. after waking up i clock out of youtube and then I when down stair to grab a snack. I came back up and now the Screen is completely frozen. no bsod or anything. just frozen. nothing is responding .i help the power butt down and then power it back on. well.... No I the unit powers with lights, the fan try to start then they stop. every time the computer tries i try to power it on. this repeats 3 times. the i start getting 7 beeps. Also the screen is black not blacklight. It tried everything like resetting the bios with the clear pins under the memory module slots but nothing... I believe this is a corrupted bios. I need to flash it back to normal. It make sense... i blame windows 10 for updating my drivers like my DPTF for screwing my machine goiong back to windows 8.1 pro for sure this time... I have already tried the pillow trick. I know my cpu, gpu, or pch did not over heat. The temps idles at 30-40 degrees and highest the cpu and gpu ever got to was 70-80 on full load via liquid Metal thermal paste.  My laptop was not hot.  i know my bios was set to unsecure boot mode and i recently installed the newer bios. the other thing was i has speed step disabled and had throttle stop controller my clock going up to 3.6ghz no higher. I also had my cpu core voltage offset to -145 and the cache off set to -120  via throttle stop... starting to think i should not of touched the cache voltage... i kinda of realise i think i screwed my cpu with the voltages. I may need to get a new one and  solder it on....

Please help? I am at work and trying this quick post im sorry for the grammar and spelling .

thank you so much in advance!

A BIOS can't corrupt out of nowhere, unless you were trying to update it or install an unlocked version it could not go corrupt. Now according to the alienware website, 7 beeps means there's a problem with your CPU, but it's very rare that CPU's die so it's probably your motherboard. If you have the alienware 17 r3 and not the m17x r3 then it's going to be quite hard to replace it due to that soldered BGA trash.

I could believe the cpu died as well.. I have never heard of them failing like that... So i am pretty screwed ATM other brands or model 17" laptop that are that your would recommend since where on the bga POS train now...? I am really low on money any alienware laptops you could recommend  that are really goof for modding to put a 1080 in there? I think The last one was m17x r5? the last pga and mxm card. I say some German forum with a 1080 in it via mod...? Sorry at work again and can only really type this now. sorry for the grammar and spelling..

The m17x r4 is the best laptop, I've had mine for about 5 years and it's still standing strong. The r5 is slightly more updated but the new design looks awful compared to the r4. I'm not sure if a 1080 would work in any of them, nobody has tested this before. But since the 1060 and 1070 work fine there's a big chance the 1080 will work fine as well. Though I'm not sure if the mxm connector from the m17x board can deliver enough power to the 1080

  • 2 months later...

I owned 17r2 with gtx970 (bga). That was my first Alienware previously I owned Asus rog laptops. But as I can tell I haven't met crappiest laptop than r2! After upgrading to win 10 I had a problem that my laptop didn't want to shut down completely from time to time I had to hold power button to turn it off. The battery died with no reason at 12%. And the temps)) even after repasting with Arctic mx4 I faced CPU throttling))). As I think modern laptops with all chips on bga are crap! If something fails it's very hard to troubleshoot and in many ways it will lead you to the motherboard replacement. And even used one from China will cost you almost like same used laptop on eBay))) So no repairs no modding and no update for you. Now I bought Alienware m17x r4 and put there a gtx980m with no issue! And I will not switch to any "new" laptop without mxm. And the funniest thing is that my m17x r4 will kick ass of any new gaming laptop for around 1k$!
