Setup 1.30 Discussion

eGPU Enthusiast

Recommended Posts

@rgpu , started a new thread with your implementation. Would you mind including some photos as well as 3dmark11, 3dmark13 and 3dmark06 benchmark runs with your gear? Then I can add you at the appropriate place in the leaderboard at http://forum.techinferno.com/diy-e-gpu-projects/6578-implementations-hub-tb-ec-mpcie.html#dx11

Thank you. I am now downloading three 3dmark benchmarks:

3DMark-v1-5-893

3dmark_11_v105

3DMark06_v121

When I have the results (probably later today) I will let you know and update my first post in this thread.

EDIT:

this setup runs latest games 30-60 FPS on maximum settings. totally recommended if you already own this laptop and GPU - just use eGPU of your choice.

We might get a SWEX-type Dell DA-2 adapter from BPlus

Early days, but does look like we have some traction. See latest discussion from today by Roger @ BPlus and my reply below:

Hi Nando,

Good afternoon

Dou to it need provide 12V/18A power, so the 12V wire need wide.

So we think pin 1 to pin10 of ATX24 connector will be 12V, please check the picture as below:

<img src=http://i.imgur.com/CotyQsl.jpg</A>

Does our design meet your requirement?

If you have any question ,please feel free contact me.

Thank you very much.

Best Regards,

Roger

Hi Roger,

Great that you guys are interested in making this Dell DA-2 SWEX. You can see that a number of our users upgrade from expresscard/mPCIe to Thunderbolt2 enclosures where any Dell DA-2 parts may then be re-usable. Could be an incentive for users to start off with BPlus gear instead of EXP GDC.

What is Dell DA-2 P1 (pin7 on your ATX plug)?

I can see that having pin7 of your ATX plug as 12V would give a complete 12V plane which would be great for power integrity.

To answer your question, I'm not sure what the P1 wire needs on the Dell DA-2. My DA-2 PSU says P1=Vo (reserved). This video shows it being connected to GND :

. I don't want to damage my Dell DA-2 to see what happens if I connect P1 to 12V. Do you have a Dell DA-2 there you can test 12V on P1 to see if it does anything? Google isn't helping to answer that question.

Where is a 12V DC barrel cable?

There is a missing 12V 5.5mm/2.5m DC-barrel output on your design. That's needed to drive the DC jack of an eGPU adapter/enclosure and provide the 75W slot + a little bit for some board electronics.

I used a PCIe 6P cable, cut off 2 pins and then attached a barrel end making a 4P-to-barrel at http://i.imgur.com/Cm5cFen.jpg . That being the only way I could get the right keyed pins from the ATX PSU plug for a preferred 4-pin connector.

I shortened the SWEX by 11mm

I'll add that I also removed 9mm (left) and 2mm (right) from my SWEX 1.1 to make it the perfect width to fit in my AKiTiO Thunder2 enclosure. See http://forum.techinferno.com/enclosures-adapters/9426-220w-dell-da-2-ac-adapter-discussion.html#post127735

Your thoughts/comments are most welcome.

Regards,

Nando

Nando, I seem to be having trouble with my setup. I have a mid-2012 Macbook Pro Retina with the Nvidia 650m dGPU, trying to setup an Nvidia 970 FTW eGPU via the AKiTiO Thunder2.

I've run your eGPU setup via the hard drive as well as a USB installation, and my system always freezes on compaction. I've run several scenarios via your compaction help section, but I always end up freezing when the compaction process completes "Press [ENTER] to return to menu..." I can never get past this screen. It always seems to show five error messages near the end:

error - bridge (bus_behind=a) range 1 shouldn't overlap with bridge (bus_behin

error - bridge (bus_behind=9) range 1 shouldn't overlap with bridge (bus_behin

error - bridge (bus_behind=8) range 1 shouldn't overlap with bridge (bus_behin

error - bridge (bus_behind=6) range 1 shouldn't overlap with bridge (bus_behin

error - bridge (bus_behind=1) range 1 shouldn't overlap with bridge (bus_behin

Does this give you any clues as to what may be going on? Any idea if an earlier version of your eGPU setup may help?

Thanks

Per the MBR Guides for 2012 Macbooks at http://forum.techinferno.com/diy-e-gpu-projects/6578-implementations-hub-tb-ec-mpcie.html#Thunderbolt , you should be using Setup 1.20. Please contact me to get that version.

Does the DA-2 come in different revisions? Maybe it changed over the years? Are there a lot of "fake" DA-2 PSUs?

---

I am gathering all the parts to make a small eGPU setup with a GTX 970 in a closed AKiTiO case.

To achieve that, I will use a DA-2 and still try to figure out, how to get the power into the case when it is closed. The whole back side of the AKiTiO is used by the PCIe slots and the AKiTiO PCB.

For a small connection I bought the DA-2 with an old Dell Optiplex that it powered. So can reuse the original plug for the DA-2 that is soldered to the Mainboard.

My questions are:

1. Can you brainstorm where the best position is to place the DA-2 plug on the AKiTiO case? My current favorite position would be on the back side in the lower area next to the case screw or exactly at the case screw position. There is some clearance between the case and the lower part of the GPUs IO shield. Cut opening that part would mean to weaken the black structure holding the GPU and maybe to sacrifice the lower case screw (the long silver one).

2. Almost the same question but regarding a power switch… best position? At the back? At the front it should "destroy" the "clean" look. Top/bottom/sides don't seem right as well.

3. Do you think it is fine to connect all 3x12V ports to one thick string and connect all cables to that string? By that the load you be evenly distributed, right? Same with the 3xground ports.

4. To implement a switch it has to be connected to the (blue) remote port and one of the ground ports?!

.......

but not all news are good news PAY ATTENTION TO THE TOTAL COST The egpu costed me around 250 DOLLARS !!!

....

for that money you can buy 6 (SIX) EXP GDC Beasts v6.1 (with every expense covered - no import/customs, no additional delivery charges) delivered to your nearest postal office.

I just do not understand why people chose anything else.

check my setup - Beast is not bottle necking GTX 970. Why would you want other eGPU solution? If you are going to buy a GTX 970 card, so why buy some expensive adapter that is not better than Beast for this card? I would understand if you went with TITAN Z or something, then yes - Beast would be bottleneck. But GTX 970? Why?

My setup is pushing GTX 970 OC to 100% usage!

If you are concerned about Gen2 speed - then read this: I have used two different Beast v6.1 adapters, both run on Gen2 speed with no problems.

Hello Tech Inferno Fan,

I have the problem that I can't install setup 1.30.

When I execute the setup-disk-image.bat the programm stuck at step 1 "Defragging C:\eGPU\eGPU-Setup-130.img".

I tried it with setup-disk-image-linux.bat and this worked but I have no idea how to add the entry into the bootloader.

I can mount the img file but the programm does not add a entry to the bootloader.

Please help me.

edit:

i installed the img. on a usb-stick an now I can access the program.

but I'm still wondering whats the reason for this stuck.

Strange incident there. Proceed to open an Admin command prompt and type:

C:Windowssystem32>cdegpu

C:eGPU>extrascontig *.img

Contig v1.55 - Makes files contiguous Copyright (C) 1998-2007 Mark Russinovich Sysinternals - www.sysinternals.com

Summary: Number of files processed : 1 Number of files defragmented: 0 All files were either already defragmented or unable to be defragmented.

C:eGPU>

Then run 'setup-disk-image'. If it hangs on 'defragging disk image' then open 'setup-disk-image.bat' with notepad, search for 'call :contig' and type REM in front of it to make it a remark line. Ie: 'REM call :contig'. Then re-run 'setup-disk-image' to see if it now installs OK. If not, please email me to troubleshoot further.

Yes, EXP GDC has had reports of Gen2 signal issues. My experience finding the Gen2 compliance is in order (best to worst): PE4L 2.1b > PE4C V2.1 > EXP GDC V6.

If want to take a chance then consider that Setup 1.30 software can be used to downgrade the signal to Gen1 if have problems with the EXP GDC adapter: http://forum.techinferno.com/diy-e-gpu-projects/2123-diy-egpu-setup-1-30-a.html

do you mean I will need to downgrade it? older version works better?

@nand04: Thanks, will consider that. You are powering your setup with a DA-2 and a barrel plug, right? Guess that should be fine for me too, as your MSI is using much more power :D

Yes, I've created a barrel plug from my Dell DA-2 to power the AKiTiO :

OK so I have my Akitio in hand and will have the Dell DA-2 in hand probably tomorrow.. Still haven't totally decided on the video card but I think I am leaning toward a EVGA 960 4Gig or a Galax 970 to be able to fit it inside the case with little modification.. I am going to try to keep all of the wiring inside.

What I would like to know regarding the DA2 with this question is. As I understand it the DA2 Power supply requires a startup signal.

#1 - From a picture in the first post it appears that I can use a switch to turn on the main power supply. It appears that this switch would be connected to the Sense line and then to Ground. Am I reading this correctly?

#2 - If I were to just ground the Sense line would I be correct in saying that the DA2 would be powered up all the time when plugged in?

#3 - If the above is correct what does the Remote line do?

Other than that I think everything is pretty straight forward.

Thank you

Brion Sohn

@bsohn: I think you need to put a switch between "Remote" and "Ground". As soon as a connection is active between this two lines, the PSU is active.

The Remote pin need to be grounded to power on the DA-2 ...
