This does not start very well. That's not how we do it on the web. You ask me to share other people's hard work. This is wrong!!

Sorry, bro. I'm very tired this days, because of my gpu issues, so its reason why I need it. I'm sorry man, really

you either pay up or make 5 posts. Besides, the 375.57 drivers are borked so wait a bit longer for a hotfix.

Hi all. New here to T|I after realizing BF1 wouldn't run without updated drivers. I had hoped I wouldn't have to do this since I had a friend fix up my AW M17xR4 with a GTX 880M; he told me under no circumstances should I do anything without his help... but since he's passed on now that leaves me with little choice. I never really wanted to worry about it until now, but I guess I was only stalling the inevitable. Ever since then I've been running the 345.20 drivers.

What worries me most is that I'll end up bricking my display, and while I'm not running W10 nor do I have PrecisionX installed, the last thing I need is for my system to cost me more than it already has. I've already had the mobo burnt once and the display bricked as well. Agh, I regret having ever bought this laptop.

Specs

Model: Alienware M17xR4

OS: Win7 Pro x64

CPU: i7-3740QM @ 2.70 GHz

GPU: GeForce GTX 880M

RAM: 16GB 1600MHz DDR3

Storage: 256GB SSD

While I'm ashamed to admit that I'm probably less tech-savvy than my baby boomer gramps, it would be an exercise in futility to pretend otherwise. On that note, I should say that I have no idea how to follow the instructions given by J95 for the 372.95 drivers. To me it just seems very cryptic, so I hope you can forgive me. I'm probably asking for special treatment here, but I'll do anything I need to to help-you-help-me. :D

It's working fine with my 980M in El Cazador. What kind of issues are you experiencing with it.

@J95 - thanks, nephew

Hi @Glamdril!

Even I managed to follow up when reading these posts so you too will get on with it :) Just try replacing the INF in Display Driver folder and delete what J95 shown on one of the pictures above. I can try to help you with that if you still can't do it.

Just a quick question to you - how strong is your PSU for that Alienware?

Hi guys,

I'm totally new to this (I know zilch about modding). I recently got a GeForce 970M for my alienware m17x R4. After the auto updates, everything is working except PhysX. So I guess I'll need to add a custom driver. Can someone please explain all the steps to me? If there's already a post explaining everything for a noob, can someone please direct me to that post?

I'm really sorry guys, but I can't exactly understand @J95's steps. I know I'm such a noob :(

Thanks!

I managed to get the new drivers working on my system (GTX 1080 eGPU), might or might not work for you guys :

Went into the BIOS and disabled - Advanced Error reporting for the PCIe slot i had my GTX 1080 connected to.

Spoiler

Also not sure if this is possible with every BIOS or not. Since i dont quite have the standard issue Prema BIOS.

Hey there! Cheers for that mate; I'm having a crack at it tonight and will post back to say everything's good and well hopefully. The power supply I have is 240W btw. :) Also cheers @J95 for the help. I'll have a proper crack now that it's a little clearer!

@J95 to be honest, your way of deleting files from the Nvidia folder works for me, yet in order to make Optimus work on M6700 I have to modify the INF files in yet another manner. When I used the ones you've listed here for me to download, all I could get was the GTX880m working via external output, such as HDMI / displayport and what I wanted was to make gaming possible here on both ext out and the LCD screen. Therefore I figured it out another way round:

1. I downloaded the Nvidia 372.90 driver pack and deleted folders as you proposed, yet left DisplayUpdate and Optimus

2. Modified nvdispi.inf adding GTX880m lines to the strings and somewhere above (but I'm not sure if it means anything)

Now here comes the tricky part - don't ask me why I did that - it was an experiment.

3. Modified the Dell specific INF which is nvdmi.inf. Here's the trick - I've searched for GTX880m HWID which is "1198" and found out it was connected to Alienware HWIDs, such as 05AA, 05AB, etc. I grabbed the first one in the file, being the '05AA', and replaced it under "ntamd..." and in the strings sections so that it had M6700 ID --> 1198.153F. At first I did that only for one of these lines, so I left other "05AA" in their place. The GPU did not install as I wanted. Being extremely tired of trying my luck I came up with this idea to change EVERY "05AA" in the INF to mine "153F" and guess what? It worked! Actually, it still does.

The issues I've got are: the first time I managed to install the driver it was stable only for some time and then after say a week or so, it started crashing games every 10-15 minutes. Hovewer the temperatures were never above 73 degrees and the framerates were very satisfying. Unfortunately the driver started crashing, sometimes leaving me with BSOD and a "DRIVER IRQL NOT LESS OR EQUAL" message - that's why I tried different drivers - with no luck. So I came back to 372.90 and right now the laptop runs on it pretty good, however, this time the FPS are worse and I still get a weird crash from time to time, for instance when launching youtube at fullscreen via HDMI on the GTX880m.

Funny thing - the only way it works is when I replace Alienware "05AA" with "153F". I've tried that with different HWIDs, such as "05AB" and it didn't work as desired. Since this is an experiment I am not fully aware of what I did - in fact I started modding INFs like a month ago so I'm quite new to the topic. I don't know exactly what I did, but I believe I managed to trick the driver to install as if I had an Alienware/880m machine. Can anyone relate to that?

@J95 what do you mean by sBIOS? From what I know, there is no unlocked version for M6700. And what is "RS1"?

@Glamdril, how did it go? Were you able to install the drivers properly mate? :)

edit

I should probably also mention that the M6700's BIOS doesn't list GTX880m under the GPU section - I can only see it in Windows.

Thanks, J95. These drivers seem fine to me. Maximum temp during the test was 71C (with 22 ambient).

http://www.3dmark.com/3dm/15661011?

http://www.3dmark.com/3dm/15661094?

I did not do any benches for a while, so I am not sure if this is 3D mark update or driver update: these drivers no longer crash on 3D mark if there is not enough voltage. The test simply gets cancelled, while with the older 3D mark and older drivers the driver would crash. So this is great news.

@szumial, RS1 stands for Readstone 1, which is a codename for Windows 10 Anniversary Update.

Thanks @mariussx! From your signature I can see that you are running an AW laptop with a 330 Watt PSU - I have a 240 Watt one and similar config (i7-3940XM and GTX880m). Can you tell me if there is a way of checking if my PSU is enough for the PC?

Not the most accurate, but there is a way to enable live wattage display using HWinfo64 and RTSS:

http://forum.notebookreview.com/threads/how-to-monitoring-cpu-and-gpu-temperatures-in-game-in-benchmark-with-on-screen-display.655138/

Please do not use MSI afterburner or EVGA Precision X as they kill the screens. Mr. Fox created a great guide on how to setup HWinfo and RTSS for OSD, checked the last edit for a link.

There is also hardware like kill a watt, which measures the power draw of the appliance connected.

I'll go for the software means first and only resort to hardware (which would obviously be better) if doubts come :) Thanks!

edit

Just had a chance to play a bit of Witcher 3 and got the same problem again - game is crashing within 10-15 of gameplay. Temperature sensor from GPU-Z read 84 degrees top. Is the temperature the reason for crashes then?

Hello,

Sorry, if I'm asking in the wrong area... I would like some input from those who used other drivers prior to using the ones provided here and their results.

I am looking for a possible solution to some low-ish performance.

I have an Alienware 17, r5, 4700mq that I just upgraded to a 980m. Windows 10. I have a 240w adapter.

I was able to get the eurocom drivers to install, and ran some firestrike runs to check performance/stability.

Temps haven't broke 65c for the 980m and the cpu sits in the 60s as well, but my highest run on dedicated is roughly 8700 for graphics score.. I feel like this is low.

Prior to that, when I had optimus enabled, I had hit right around 9100. This is with the stock bios as well (or whatever woodzstack has on his cards)

Basically just curious if anyone thinks this would be driver related, or something else. I have tried older drivers, but with the same results.

If driver related - would the drivers provided here help me? Or would they only help if I have a different vbios - Prema or Svl7?

Thank you!!

@Rohr7

the same here.

I cant even switch it to dedicated mode . when I switch it via osd ( uefi checked, gpt checked, disable fast reboot and secure boot) , after reboot it turned in black screen with no beep no back-light. I can only get 8900 score in fire strike with optimus mode.

I'm wondering if I can install the driver without osd and I'm a nood dont really understand the procedure like   -> reboot -> F8 -> select 'Disable Driver Signature Enforcement' -> Install drivers and then run ddu clean it?

please forgive me and help..
