[Alienware - Clevo - MSI] Aftermarket Upgrades Driver Support - Modded INF

Recommended Posts

Hello, quick question before I even attempt to dive into any of this, are these drivers universal as far as hardware ID's are concerned or the INT files for that matter, or do they have to be tailored specifically to each individual machine? First time swapping a card in a laptop so I figured I would ask before I broke something.

Hello, I've tried (and probably messed up somewhere while trying to follow the instructions) to install the latest drivers for a card I just recently installed and it seems its not recognizing the new installed hardware, I upgraded from a nvidia 460m to a 680m, I've made sure everything was seated properly and firmly but I am having no luck.

My hardwear ID's are showing:

PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_11A0&SUBSYS_04BA1028&REV_A1

PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_11A0&SUBSYS_04BA1028

PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_11A0&CC_030000

PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_11A0&CC_0300

and my system specs on my M17XR3

post-31557-14494998856612_thumb.jpg

This is my first upgrade so I'm sure I goofed up somewhere but any help would be appreciated.

Hi @IggyDerp, welcome to T|I.

Follow this guide, just skip the IDT workaround (780M/Integrated sound card disabled) [Guide] Alienware M17xR3 GTX 780M installation

Thank you for the welcome c: and for the quick guide as well! Seems like everything installed smoothly once the proper steps were followed, I have just one more follow up question.

Am I able to re-enable my integrated graphics or would you advise against this and just leave it as is?

Nope, keep it disabled. Glad it worked out...:D

Hi J95, one question... Would upgrade my m18x r1 with gtx 780, I understand that with each new version of nvidia drivers, is necessary use a new "INF" modify file, which is created specifically for new version drivers.

Hi @gimdi

Correct, latest version 344.80 Single & SLI options http://forum.techinferno.com/nvidia/6307-%5Balienware%5D-aftermarket-upgrades-driver-support-modded-inf-9.html#post114229

I've been using nv_dispi.inf for some time now, mainly to exclude OEM customizations.

Since nvdmi.inf lacks Maxwell entries and to avoid multiple INFs, I've included all models & cards -> nv_dispi.inf <- AW17 - M17x - AW18 - M18x - GTX 980M - 970M - 880M - 780M - 680M - Single & SLI

Desktop entries GTX 980/970.

Note: v347.09 GTX 980M SLI and GTX 970M SLI notebooks are not supported

with this driver. With SLI enabled on these notebooks, a black screen

will occur upon uninstalling this driver. To workaround this issue,

disable SLI before uninstalling the driver.

GeForce 344.91 OEM (Clevo) - INF MOD AW 17" & 18" GTX 980M & 970M

@J95 for some reason, 344.91 in dedicated gave me the best result possible. I Checked with other benchmarks that several other members with AW 17 including eurocom's AW 17 benchmark and apparently my scores are more or less the same as them. Looks like 980m in AW 17 is in a way slightly gimped compared to other laptops.

@faritas90 http://forum.techinferno.com/alienware/8113-going-test-clevo-980m-alienware-m17x-r4-m18x-r2-aw17-97.html#post118548

Start w/ v344.91, compare results

Windows 8.1

    Run DDU/Safe mode -> Clean and Restart (uncheck Intel HD Drivers)
  • F8 Boot options. 'Safe Mode' & 'Disable driver Signing'
    cmd (Admin)
    bcdedit /set {default} bootmenupolicy legacy

    -> reboot -> F8 -> select 'Disable Driver Signature Enforcement' -> Install drivers.

  • Extract driver w/ 7-Zip/winrar
  • Extracted driver folder "34x.xx-notebook-win8-win7-64bit-international-whql" -> copy NVWMI folder.
  • Display.Driver folder -> copy/overwrite nvcv.inf(NV drivers v344.91) or nvcvi.inf (NV drivers v347.09, v344.80, v344.75) nvcvui.inf/v347.12.
  • Extracted driver folder -> run setup.exe
  • -> reboot -> disable Optimus <-

Delete unnecessary folders. Rename "NVWMI_2.20" to "NVWMI"

Does it work with external screens? I've got tons of problems with different inf files from different users (anyway, thankful with them)

Edit: aw17 2005 60Hz screen and w8.1

v344.80 includes many fixes related to blank screen issues, try v344.91. Run DDU first (above) Clean & Shutdown option.

Windows 8.1 - Win7 skip "bcdedit /set command" & 'Disable driver Signing'

    Run DDU 'Clean and Shutdown'
  • F8 Boot options. 'Safe Mode' & 'Disable driver Signing'
    cmd (Admin)
    bcdedit /set {default} bootmenupolicy legacy

    -> reboot -> F8 -> select 'Disable Driver Signature Enforcement' -> Install drivers.

  • GeForce 327.23 WHQL
  • Extract driver w/ 7-Zip/winrar
  • Display.Driver folder -> copy/overwrite nvdmn.inf
  • Extracted driver package -> run setup.exe

#115 Above latest driver v347.52 (nv_dispi.inf), try it too.

Don't use nvdmi.inf, Display.Driver copy/overwrite nv_dispi.inf and don't forget to disable driver signing before installing drivers #115 http://forum.techinferno.com/nvidia/6307-%5Balienware%5D-aftermarket-upgrades-driver-support-modded-inf-12.html#post122485

Here's something I can't seem to figure out J95, I'm using your 347.52 Mod to do overclocking but I'm still using nvdmi.inf that I've had to mod myself to get my 980m to work.

Every driver I try doesn't seem to work with the nvdispi, or the other modded files you provide. My computer boots but it hangs shortly after boot, I have to quickly reboot with advanced options to get Safe mode to remove drivers.

I've had this problem with the modified BIOS for overclocking and without, doesn't seem to matter. Somewhere in there as well I lost the ability to switch from dedicated to Optimus so I've left the system in optimus. If I leave the system with NVidia drivers modified using nvdmi.inf my system runs stable and seems to benchmark fairly well. I just can't seem to wrap my head around what is hanging Windows, this is on a very fresh install as well. I wiped system because of this issue shortly after I received my card. Any magic or tips you can suggest?

It's an Alienware 17 (2014) with an HIDEvolution 980M, id is 05AA 1028

post-33687-14494999601444_thumb.jpg

Changed a couple settings and just ran 11801. So obviously it's not doing too bad.
