ThinkPad T420 eGPU Setup Failure - Exhausted please help

Problem description 

1. What's the problem?

I have hooked up my eGPU through the ExpressCard Slot. I have installed all drivers. Under Device Manager it shows my eGPU. Sometimes it will show up with an error 12 but most of the time it does not. When I plug in the HDMI port to my TV, my TV acts like to it received a signal and fails displaying no signal. 

2. Have you consulted the Troubleshooting FAQ to resolve the issue?

I believe I have delved into it thoroughly but nothing has worked. Thank you for getting me this far, I have been at this for days.

3. Have you consulted the Pre-Purchase FAQ --> "2. How can I check if my notebook is compatible with an eGPU?"

Yes, I have also seen many videos and posts of people using my exact same laptop with wonderful success.


Platform Description

Lenovo ThinkPad T420

Windows 7 64bit SP1

8gb Ram 

XFX Radeon HD 6870 

EVGA 400W PSU [+12V Max Current = 30 Amps]

PE4C-EC060A V3.0 ( eGPU PCIe x16 interface for ExpressCard)

 

Notes

There are two-3 position switches located on the board. I have them set at their default 1 and 1.

The legend on the board notes this:

SW1 - PERST# Delay - 1 | Disable - 2 | 9.8 seconds - 3 | 14.8 seconds

SW2 - CLK Delay - 1 | Disable - 2 | 11.97 seconds - 3 | 16.9 seconds

I have tried these in every possible combination.

Any help resolving these issues would be greatly appreciated.

When the gpu is listed in the device manager with no errors and the hdmi is plugged in is the tv listed in the windows display properties menu? You cannot manually enable it? Also when you right click the desktop do you have access to the amd control center?

Thank you for the reply. Unfortunately the TV is not listed. This morning it began working however. It was glorious. Steps I took after my post was simply reinstalling the Intel(R) HD 3000 Graphics drivers with my eGPU disconnected. I then found the following order of operation allows me to utilize the eGPU but this is not my first choice. If there is an alternate way to make this function more elegantly I would love to here about it.

 

1) Turn Laptop off

2) Place both switches at 1

3) Turn PSU on

4) Insert ExpressCard Adapter

5) Turn PC on

Note: At this point the eGPU spins up and then spins down, the TV acts like it received a signal but failed and displays "No Signal". Laptop cycles and boots using the Intel drivers and the internal display.

6) Insert HDMI Cable into the eGPU - Signal is broadcast to TV, sound and all. Glorious. Dxdiag reports that I am running through the Radeon and my FPS in game jumps from 24 to 60+ with greater detail. 

 

I would love to have a more elegant solution other than booting with ExpressCard inserted. What I would prefer is being able to insert the ExpressCard Post boot and utilize the external display. I believe this has something to do with initializing the device. When I boot without the ExpressCard adapter inserted and insert it post boot the Display Adapter does not show in the Device Manager. I understand this is a jakey setup anyway but I don't think it has be, it's a very impressive feat. 

 

If anyone has questions about this particular setup on the Thinkpad T420, I will do my best to answer them with my limited knowledge. This is a great a forum by the way.

The purpose of the switches on the PE4C are to mimic the expresscard being plugged in after boot. Try switch combinations like 1-1, 1-2, 2-1, and 2-2.

Keep the igp drivers installed, there is no reason to remove it.

My suggestions:

  • Try to search for hardware changes after the delays expire(red leds).
    • not working for me, red delay LEDs never show up after:
      •  safety remove hardware
      • power off the PSU
      • start the PSU
      • but my mobo forces #perst and i didn't removed the connector since im on mPCIe
  • The other clunky workaround is to just sleep you computer and wake it up with egpu connected.
    • this works for me and i'm fine with it

      I need help in fixing my Thinkpad.

      I just got a T440p yesterday. It was working perfectly until the following:

      I reinstalled Windows and then I installed Vantage.

      I installed all the latest drivers.
      I also choose to install the bios update. The bios update ran in Windows and it asked me to restart. After restarting, the screen was blank. I tried powering it off and on and I saw the Thinkpad logo but after that the screen was blank.

      I tried powering on and off again and there's no Thinkpad logo now and the screen is just blank with the green power on. No sound, no nothing.


      Here's what I tried:
      Pressing the power button 10 times and then holding it for 30 seconds. Unplugged and battery is detachted Detached the CMOS battery and the reattached it Removed the ram, harddisk and optical disk drive. Attached the battery and inserted the charger. I turned it on and there was a couple of beeps Tried pressing FN+R and created a bootable USB I'd like to ask: How do I fix this? What do I need to do?
      Can I reflash the bios in some other way? Do I need to buy a new motherboard? Will this solve the issue? It's my first thinkpad and I'm really excited but I was bummed out that this happened. Can you please help me?

      Hello everyone! I am looking for an answer to a problem I cannot find a solution to ... I purchased an Amd wx 4150 MXM GPU module su e bay to upgrade my HP 8570W Mobile Workstation which is currently equipped with a Fire Pro M4000. Once the new GPU has been installed, the PC screen no longer turns on but works only with external monitors connected via the docking station. The same happens once the drivers are updated! If I put the old card back on, the integrated monitor starts working again ... How can I fix it?

      Hello, A couple of days ago I got a new GPU but when I installed it into my computer I was unable to use it but now I know why. When checking the device manger I went into the events tab of my GPU when I went to view all events, I noticed an error it said " event 411 kernel PnP " and It also said Problem Status: 0xC01E0438. I believe this is why my GPU hasn't been working on my PC. If you know how to fix this problem or have info on how to fix this problem that would be greatly appreciated. I'm also using a EVGA NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660.

      I'm having a problem where my PC is saying my eGPU is not usable, its detected in the Device Manager and it doesn't have the yellow triangle next to it. I cant use it games and the Nvidia Control Panel doesn't recognize it either. I'm using a EVGA NVIDIA Geforce GTX 1660. I'm using windows 10 and I tried DDU and reinstalling them and now I cant access the nvidia control panel. The GPU is not recognize on any other apps and I went on *********** and was unable to find my answer, Any help on how to fix this problem would be greatly appreciated.

      TL;DR: we have a Clevo that runs a desktop CPU, one with those huge 82 Wh batteries. We remove the GPU and let it use the CPU's integrated graphics. How much time for the battery to go from 100 to 0? Is it comparable to an ultrabook's?
       
      I'm theorizing a mobile set with a static eGPU and an upgradable CPU. Given a hypothetical user that needs fast processing on the go and long battery life while retaining very high degrees of mobility, but at home wants a powerful machine to run most games, I guess that would be their best bet. It would surely be more convenient to keep everything in the same disk. And even though the thing would be quite heavy to carry around, changing CPU would be more cost-efficient than changing an entire laptop. (Not sure if I'm right here, and also I'm not sure whether the motherboard in a Clevo would be replaceable when the new CPU needs a different socket, which is another reason why I'm asking here.)
       
      If my above guesses aren't correct, then an ultrabook with Thunderbolt and without a dedicated GPU would be a better choice. If they are, then we would be carrying more weight in exchange of a more cost-efficient setup, which I think would be a fair tradeoff.
       
      Also I am aware of the heating problems that these laptops suffer from, at least compared to a desktop setup. Would they be solved by moving the GPU out of the chassis, and instead plugging it with an eGPU dock via Thunderbolt port?
       
      What do you think? Is it doable? If not, why?
