Help Designing eGPU

Recommended Posts

So I'm planning on building an egpu setup due to the fact that I want desktop performance, while I am unable to build a desktop. My main concern is of the thunderbolt port and jack, which is obviously superior to the express card. It is my goal to use my current laptop (Lenovo y50, https://www.amazon.com/Lenovo-15-6-Inch-Gaming-Laptop-59425944/dp/B00K6ZIMPE) however, it doesn't have a port for thunderbolt. Are there any adapters that I can use?

Below are what I'm planning on using, please provide input on what I should change-

GPU-EVGA GTX1070, Founders Edition, https://www.amazon.com/EVGA-GeForce-Support-Graphics-08G-P4-6173-KR/dp/B01GLRX81I/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1476304953&sr=8-1&keywords=gtx%2Bgeforce%2B1070&th=1

PSU (I am looking for a cheaper one, I do plan on overclocking), https://www.amazon.com/Corsair-Factor-Modular-Certified-Warranty/dp/B01CGGOXWQ?psc=1&SubscriptionId=AKIAJ2RTWSYJUOAO3DIA&tag=bom_tomshardware-20&linkCode=xm2&camp=2025&creative=165953&creativeASIN=B01CGGOXWQ&tzd=18&ascsubtag=[site|thaus[cat|[art|[pid|B01CGGOXWQ[tid|14763061341006985[bbc|LESPRIX

Dock, Akitio Thunder2, https://www.amazon.com/Akitio-AMZ-T2PC-TIA-AKTU-Thunder2-PCIe/dp/B00LTAUTHE/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1476304543&sr=8-1&keywords=akitio+thunder2+pcie+box

And so far that is what I have, I just recently started researching and I heard that this place was the best for input. I also want an external monitor and possible an external keyboard, but I am still thinking about that due to budget. Please provide input on what I should do, thank you!

Your notebook doesn't have a Thunderbolt port, just like you already stated. End of the road for your plan there, sorry to say. There are no adapters because honestly if you think about it just for a moment where should they go into? That's why Thunderbolt exists, it fills this niche.

Your only way to achieve an eGPU is the mPCIe version of either PE4C or EXP GDC.

On what you should do: Either sell the notebook and look for a used notebook with Thunderbolt 2 or go for a new notebook with Thunderbolt 3 and get one of the available adapters for that.
