Yeah should work! Would consider upgrading to Windows 10?

Also make sure that you power the AKiTiO from that 500W PSU (btw what PSU is it?). Maybe consider a Dell DA-2?

https://www.techinferno.com/index.php?/forums/topic/7947-the-basic-egpu-hardware-guide-for-macs/

Hey I was thinking of using the evga 500w power supply, is it a good enough quality? BTW i also have a question about the dell DA-2 as I see many people on youtube say they use it for their egpu in the description. Is it a PSU and if so isn't it 220w which is not powerful enough for most graphics cards? I really have no clue :(

The Dell DA-2 PSU is working perfectly fine for any GTX up to a GTX970.

A stock GTX970 is only using sth about 145W and any power recommendations from the GPU manufactures is for the whole PC.

Since all GTX970 on the market are overclocked and free to use more power 220W is perfect for it.

Did you read about the barrel plug mod? You should power the GPU and the AKiTiO from one PSU.

With all the news about the Razer Core and the AKiTiO products I wondered which
notebook I'd buy. I already saw the candidate list in the sticky post ( thanks for that )
but most of them didn't quite fit my criteria.

I'd love a notebook that:

  • is equal or less than 22mm thick
  • very sturdy
  • has a working time of 6 or more hours
  • only has an iGPU
  • only one M.2-M NVMe slot.
  • 14" or 15.6"
  • i7-6700HQ
  • QHD or UHD
  • 2.2kg or less
  • TB3
  • "switchable graphics" or just eGPU certified
  • optional: power over TB3

I know "working time" is different for a lot of people, but I guess if a review
would measure 6 hours in their WiFi tests that would be okay.

So I wondered if I'd find notebooks from the Haswell and Broadwell generation that
had not yet received a Skylake and/or Thunderbolt 3 treatment, but came up short there too.

The only candidates were some really expensive buisness notebooks.

Do you think a notebook like above will be released?

It doesn't need to fit all criterias to a T.
What would you like your eGPU Notebook to have?
Do you have a specific model in mind that you would love to see

with TB3?
Let me know in the comments bel... wait wrong place.

Been using this one for over a month

http://www.amazon.com/Acer-VN7-592G-71ZL-15-6-inch-Notebook-Windows/dp/B015XBKY6U/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1455325120&sr=8-1&keywords=acer+v15+nitro

Hits most of your criteria, has integrated igpu as well as 960m so you can switch graphics. Great build, solid battery life and crazy fast machine. I put a 120gb m.2 ssd as my boot drive. The weight is pretty solid for a machine this size and definitely looks sleek. Got mine off amazon for $850 which is a complete steal for what you get.

Spec list:

  • 6th Generation Intel Core i7-6700HQ Quad Core Processor 2.6GHz with Turbo Boost Technology up to 3.5GHz (6MB L3 cache)
  • Windows 10 Home
  • 15.6" Full HD (1920 x 1080) widescreen LED-backlit IPS display
  • 8GB DDR4 Dual Channel Memory
  • 1TB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive
  • NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960M with 4 GB of dedicated GDDR5 VRAM

yeah, I've been eyeballing the 592G for a while now.

But the Battery life really puts me off, plus all models are about 200$ more expensive
here in Europe.

The 592G runs with a 3 cell 48Wh Battery at 10.8V I wonder if I can
use the 9 Cell of a XPS 15 with 84Wh. I could only use a M2 SSD and
use the SATA space for the additional Cells. Maybe 3D print myself a new
casing for the cells hmmm...

Hello, I'm new on both this forum and eGPU subject. I've read Tech Inferno Fan's thread on this forum: Lenovo L440+Quadro K2000. This is fantastic setup. I've been looking for something like this for some time since I have Lenovo T420. My version have 8GB of RAM and i5-2520 processor with hd 3000 graphics and I'm looking for some way to improve it's performance in professional appplications like Inventor or Ansys. I focused on building eGPU equipped mobile workstation and I've been worrying if it makes any sense to put cards like Quadro or Firepro into this project through EXP GDC v8 adapter and EC socket. I found this thread and I have some doubts.

First of all I'm fresh with eGPU and it would be my first setup like this. Do you think it is a good idea to start with cards like this (at first I want to try with cards like firepro v3800 and if it works fine upgrade it later)? Would I be able to build this setup?

And the second question is about computer performance with professional cards. Does these cards work fine? I mean aren't they much slowered by EC speed or bus capacity?

I'm sorry if there are some essential mistakes in my post - i'm not an IT specialist. Thanks for all

I wanted to ask if anyone had any experience with external gpu? Because I want to pick one up for Lenovo Y500 as the performance couldnt keep up with some latest titles like Fallout 4. I had a GTX 980 lying around as I sold my dekstop so I thought it would be a waste to sell it. It looks like the picture below. I am worried about the speed as it connect through mPCIe which if I remember correctly had much lower speed compared to normal PCIe. I found on hwtools . net which came with power brick supplied.

Hey guys, I am new to this website and wanted a question answered.

I have a dell xps l502x and I am looking into this eGPU solution and wanted to know if these parts are the right parts for the build:

eGPU adapter - http://www.ebay.com/itm/181943864835?rmvSB=true

GTX 960 - http://www.amazon.com/EVGA-GeForce-Whisper-Graphics-02G-P4-2966-KR/dp/B00SC6HAS4/ref=sr_1_1?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1455585361&sr=1-1&keywords=gtx+960

500w power supply - http://www.amazon.com/EVGA-Continuous-Warranty-Supply-100-W1-0500-KR/dp/B00H33SFJU/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1455585434&sr=8-1&keywords=500w+psu

Once again I am sorry if this is the wrong place to ask this question.

If they are compatible, I will invest in the parts and report my experiences.

Hello gents and ladies. I'm going to start this off by saying that I am a complete newbie to eGPU solutions and while I have a basic grasp on how they work and their limitations I do not possess an advanced technical know-how on this subject.

-Story- (skip if you dgaf)

Now, my life's requirements have me often moving from one country to the other and whilst in the past I've built a gaming tower I often find myself without the willpower nor the time to ship it overseas every time I move. My first thought was to buy a gaming laptop but they seem to be ridiculously overpriced machines that end up being obsolete almost immediately after you buy them, so I settled on an eGPU.

-Idea

Something that really caught my eye in the market was this solution:

it looks compact and streamlined and easy to use. Although after some more reading I garnered that the "bison box" is quite an expensive rebrand of some components already available on the market, what I had seen in the video sort of stayed with me as my ideal setup.

Now, I am not a huge fan of MacBooks and Apple in general, and was wondering if I could do a similar thing with a Windows laptop (price is NOT an issue) in this case. I was thinking of getting a  Dell XPS 15 like this one:

http://www.dell.com/en-us/shop/productdetails/xps-15-9550-laptop

and configure it with the use of it's Thunderbolt plug in a setup similar to the above.

I have not seen anyone else do this and my searches on Google have brought up no one else with my same idea, so this brings me to:

-Questions

Is this possible?

If yes, how can I implement it?

If not, what is the best alternative/s?

Thank you all for the attention, I'm sorry for the newb-ishness that transpires from this post and I'm looking forward to your answers, good day.

Hello Brothers!

Newbie here, so forgive my lack of knowledge.

I have an HP 2760P Elitebook and I will post all that I can about it's specs.

DxDiag

CPU-Z

(Not important) but I guess this may or may not have extra processor info Intel link

Btw, my DxDiag says "4 CPU", and CPU-Z says "2 cores". Isn't 4 CPU means 4 core? (again, I'm newbie, bear with me).

My ExpressCard Slot is a 34 one and it is one of these 4:

1 - 2 - 3 - 4

Don't know which one exactly but my question is: I saw and heard people say that Expresscards has 2.5 GB/s speed at max. Mine is showing 5 GB/s max speed (why is that). If this is possible then I will get a good 5 GB out of my GPU.

The GPU that I will use is still on delivery. But It's a powerful one and this is it: MSI R9 390 Gaming 8GB

I will use an external PSU for sure.

And I think I will use THIS adapter?

Any advice for me? Any better Adapter? Any better adapter that will serve my card good and use most of this GPU power? Anything I forgot?

Oh and if you tell me to go desktop, I would if I could. Long story short, I'm displaced and really far away from home. Laptop is my option for now.

Thank you very much for reading and for helping.

=D

PE4C V3.0 is the best eGPU adapter for your system. R9 390 will require a DSDT override on your Elitebook to work due to the limited BIOS-set TOLUD:

Thanks Tech Inferno Fan

I will work on the override and allocate the eGPU into 36-bit space thanks to your guide. I will then post my results on the DIY eGPU experiences thread.

Thank you so much for helping  me and everyone.

My old message.

Spoiler

Hello,

I also have a Toshiba Qosmio DX730 -can be seen here- . It has an HDMI-Input and this is the one that I will be using anyway as a monitor for gaming.

It has no ExpressCard slots, but has a WLAN module. So I thought, If I bring an eGPU adapter, why not get one for 2 PCs?!(I mean a mPCIe)

My questions are:

* Will changing my RAM to 2x8GB increase performance for DIY eGPU?

* I enlisted a Toshiba AIO PC here, any advice about it for DIY eGPU?

* Will getting a mPCIe adapter be better for using on any laptop ?(I don't mind taking out my WLAN for HP or Toshiba)

* According to what you see, between my HP and Toshiba, which one better performs for a DIY eGPU?

* Can you please provide your BTC address for donations?

5 questions :)  :P

I hope you won't find any trouble answering them. Thank you so much.

EDIT: Did my research, googled for services and compared components. Learned a lot. Found the answers to my questions :)

Yes, increasing ram increases performance. Yes, mPCIe is better if I can handle the WLAN removal and do the setup steps correctly, because both adapters use the same bandwidth. HP CPU is better than Toshiba in this case, so it will serve better for an eGPU build.

Thank you.

Hi everyone.

I have a HP Compaq nx7400  laptop. Its pretty old, but since I had it lying around, I though of using it as an eGPU project. The card i plan on using will be a gtx 750 ti.  My questions are as follows:

1) The processor in the laptop is a core duo 32 bit processor.  I will upgrade it to a core 2 duo t7200 or t7400 processor. Will this processor bottleneck too much in games? 40-50fps is fine for me though.

2) I'll be using the EXP GDC Beast for this using express card slot. What are the chances it'll work? Can anybody confirm it works?

3) What is the setup 1.3 thing? Will I have to use it? I really dont want to spend too much money on this project. Is there a work around or will i have to pay $25 for the software?

Thanks.

Hey there, new to the forum, and new to egpu experience. (tough i read a lot about it).

Question for you nando.

I got a GDC exp Beast V8 Pcie version the other day, got it working on my Toshiba L50-A-18T (i7-4700MQ @2.40GHz 8bg ram and Windows 10), Didnt need the setup software yet.

just had to deactivate my Dgpu on Device manager to get it working as my bios doesnt let me do it.

So the question is about mPcie bandwith, what graphics card do you recomend?

If i got a GTX 960 4bg Gddr5, what kind of bottle neck regarding the mpcie interface, Or should i just buy a cheaper graphics?

Would your software help in anyway, regarding freening more bandwith on the mpcie ?

Ty in Advance man.

Yes, Setup 1.30 can be used to switch the mPCe port from Gen1->Gen2 to gain more performance. Disabling the dGPU there can also improve DX9 performance.

Contact details to obtain the software is at  https://www.techinferno.com/index.php?/forums/topic/1650-diy-egpu-setup-130-previously-setup-1x/

I have a variant of the Clevo W230SS machine.

Info: http://www.notebookcheck.net/Review-Clevo-W230SS-Schenker-XMG-P304-Barebones-Notebook.113676.0.html

And i have been thinking about buying the V2.0 EXP GDC Beast external graphics card dock: http://www.ebay.com/itm/181943864835

But can my laptop use it?

According to the latest version of HWiNFO64, the motherboard of this machine has the following slots:

Motherboard Slots: 2xPCI Express x1, 1xPCI Express x16

The x16 slot has the following info:

Slot Designation:	J6B2
Slot Type:	PCI Express
Slot Usage:	In use
Slot Data Bus Width:	16x / x16
Slot Length:	Long

Here's a picture of the insides of my machine, with the names of the slots written:

full picture: http://0o2471.net/64088

64088.jpg

The names of the slots:

14023 E13: Currently occupied by mSATA SSD
14023 E13: Currently occupied by mSATA SSD
14176 E4K: Currently occupied by WiFi card (7260HMW)

Info on the WiFi card: https://wikidevi.com/wiki/Intel_Dual_Band_Wireless-AC_7260_(7260HMW)

Is the x16 slot the slot currently occupied by the WiFi card?

Any opinions on why/why not this laptop can use the external dock?

And what graphics card should i get without bottlenecking?

Attached to this post is a .zip file with the complete HWinfo64 report in html format.

Thanks in advance.

@Turbolego

If your laptop has the 860m I would not even consider an eGPU. If you have the 765m the eGPU will be an improvement, but not what you are likely hoping for. The x16 slot is for the dGPU and it cannot be changed. You only have one mpci-e slot, so you can only do x1 2.0, and even that requires having no wifi card. You will need to use nando4's setup program to disable the dGPU for optimus to run since Clevo systems lack a BIOS option to disable the dGPU. With the performance hit of x1 there will be some games that run better on the 860m than if you were running an eGPU 980, although there would be some where the 980 does win significantly.

@shraey96

Even with the CPU upgrade, the CPU will still be a substantial bottleneck in many games. I personally would go for a new laptop, or maybe a desktop for games when at home. I have no idea what hayden55 is talking about when referencing a 980m.
