Thanks for the pics of your setup man! That is a ton of help!

didjya use dummy dvi?

btw, wut is suitable GPU card if only using internal display?

No I didn't bother with any dummy stuff. The issue is the display data has to travel back over the mPCIe 1x lane so you loose a lot of performance. I almost wouldn't even recommend you run on the internal display as any card will have about the same hit.

The only thing I don't like about using only an external display is, it doesn't turn off the internal one completely.

You can hit the Fn and f2 keys to shut the internal monitor off completely.

Just hooked it up. All I had to do to get it to run was disable the main 750m card (I have sli) and install the radeon drivers.

My laptop in firestrike by default gets:

3379 http://www.3dmark.com/fs/9461124

If I use the interal display (mirroring) I only get:

5308 http://www.3dmark.com/fs/9461257

But if only use the external display I get:

8979 http://www.3dmark.com/fs/9461317

HUGE improvement in fact it actually beat the card running at 16x with a phenom II 965 (my backup system)

8 979 to 8381

http://www.3dmark.com/compare/fs/9461317/fs/8949440

mainly due to the higher physics scores (CPU) although the GPU only scored 1000 points less over the mPCIe

So you did not download an unlocked bios to get the external gpu to work?

How did you disable the main 750m card. I have the same problem. I can't get my eGPU to  run properly. Every time I connect it, the laptop boots into black screen and the eGPU fans stop spinning.

What should I do? Please help.

I just disabled it through Windows device manager. Both cards start up when booting into Windows, but the 750m disables once the login screen comes up. Though, the 750m will re-enable it's self at some times and just needs disabled again. Keep in mind, I am only using mine via Screen 2 on the external monitor output. If I was mirroring or extending the screen, both screens would show up and wold be still running off the RX 480.

Here's how it should boot up with a similar setup to mine:

This is my setup below:

The problem is that the fans on the external GPU stop rotating after windows boots and it's stuck in boot screen.

I'm using GTX 960.

ALSO, the external screen is simply blank.

This is my BIOS setup, maybe I did something wrong.

Second scenario is when completely black screen but the fans are spinning and no external screen output.

This is frustrating

I tried using the settings you provided but the computer didn't want to boot. It was stuck in a bootloop. Here's the thing: the computer boots into safe more and the eGPU is recognized in the device manager but the computer doesn't want to load in normal boot. And suggestions?

Thanks

The computer is in safe mode. This is okay but I can't really use it in this mode.

Well I had to restore my system to the last point of successful boot.

I will try the whole process again but Y500 was cleanly not made to run an external GPU with ease unlike y580 which has no problems

You flashed an unlocked bios right?

Of course I did.

Your plugging a monitor into the external GPU? The fans on most Nvidia GPUs will turn off at idle. I wouldn't be surprised if it was outputting video only out of the GPU.

I reinstalled everything from scratch... Same problem persists

I'm stuck in boot logo now. This is a disaster.

What am I doing wrong?
