In a not so surprising move, Dell will be updating its Alienware notebook line for 2012 to coincide with the release of the new  Ivy Bridge mobile processor along with the the new AMD and nVidia GPUs.

According to our friend Eric G., the M17x-R4 will be getting some new GPU options that feature the new AMD 7970M and nVidia Geforce GTX 660M and 675M.

For the M14x-R2 will come two color options (red or black) while still having an integrated GPU with 1 or 2 GB options.

Finally, the M18x-R2 will continue to be sold with the option of red or black exterior but other details are still not available. However, given that the M17x-R4 will be receiving new AMD and nVidia GPUs, its a safe bet to assume so will the M18x-R2.

Whether or not the existing M17x-R3 and M18x-R1 will be compatible with the new AMD/nVidia GPUs and Intel Ivy Bridge mobile processors remains unanswered. Once we get more information on this, we’ll let you know.

Actually missed that, cheers. Also, isn’t that the guy that’s been reporting that for a long time? If so his site looks different (unless he had to take down the previous one or something).

If Dell were smarter they would be bending over backwards to get SMD to produce OLED screens for at least 1 of the alienware laptops for 2012.

Well I’ve heard that they have sampled OLED screens for their next generation Alienware notebooks but haven’t made a decision yet. I think it’ll come down to 3D vs OLED and unfortunately, marketing always picks 3D for its gimmicky  nature.

I wanted to buy the r4 but now because of the delays Im geting impatient

Would recommend waiting for the r4 or go in for the r3??What is the latest date that r4 can be launched

New GPUs can be ordered now, if you also want the new mobo and Ivy CPU you need to wait a bit mo more, I guess Intel is going to officially launch the CPUs at the begin of June, you should be able to order a system pretty much instantly after Ivy launch, and the earliest you’ll get it is probably end of June.

Well in this point in time it is probably better to wait for the R4 to appear, if only for keeping the resale value of your laptop. Do not expect groundbreaking changes between R3 and R4 though..
