GPU Temperature Stress Test: Furmark – every GPU’s nightmare.
For the GPU temperature testing portion, we chose Furmark as we feel it is one of the few programs out there that really pushes a video card to its limits. Even nVidia is scared of this test as they advise their customers to avoid it. Our recent discussions with Alienware technical support has yielded the same cautions: Avoid furmark because it is known to burn GPUs! Well, how could we resist?!?
M18x Furmark
M17x-R2 Furmark
*Please note: Our M18x was placed on a cooling pad for the tests but the fans for the cooling pad were not active.
The program we used to measure the temperatures on both systems is HWiNFO32 (version 381.1273 at that time) and as you can see from the screenshots above, M18x has higher maximum temperatures for its secondary GPU while on the M17x-R2 the secondary GPU runs cooler than its primary GPU and in both cases the M17x-R2 has better (lower) temperatures than the M18x. Please note that the M18x GPUs were repasted and the reasons for doing so are covered in the next page.
