With Sony’s recent flashy introduction of the NGP, many people were awed by it’s specs and powerful quadcore CPU and hoped it may rival it’s bigger brother the Playstation 3. Well according to Kotaku, at GDC, Sony’s platform research manager set the record straight, “Some people in the press have said ‘Wow, this thing could be as powerful as a PS3.’,” Coombes said. “Well, it’s not going to run at 2 GHz because the battery would last five minutes… and it would probably set fire to your pants.”
However, with new features such as 3G, Wifi, multitouch screen, multitouch back panel and a display with 4x the resolution of it’s predecessor, Sony hopes it’s newest handheld will capture the hearts of consumers and hopefully fare better in sales compared to the PSP which sold a meager 79,400 units in August. With Nintendo’s recent successful launch of its 3DS in Japan with 400,000 units sold, Sony has an uphill battle for handheld supremacy.
